Until the entire population is able to get vaccinated - specifically the under 12 - having a high degree of community spread is putting those people at risk - regardless of if the spread is coming from vaccinated or unvaccinated people. This is controllable by a simple change in behavior.

The point is, at worst, there was no significant difference. The data is freely available, it doesn't lie. The argument was never "masks worn correctly and of the correct type don't work." The argument is that mandating masks doesn't work. And you can compare data from the state level down to the local level and there is absolutely nothing to suggest mandates had any positive effect on the pandemic.

Good mask education and being optional was always the correct course. Unfortunately, we took the route that qualified any piece of cloth as a 'mask' and lead vulnerable people to believe they were 'protected' in virtually every setting.

And to this day we still continue to peddle that nonsense suggesting that an unvaccinated person with a cloth mask is as protected as a vaccinated person without; some actually believe the former is safer.

Thank you! These masks being sold in retail aren't medical grade. They're made up of the same cotton as our shirts and underwear. Outdoors is not a controlled lab setting. The vaccines are available on every corner in this country. If you haven't got it, chances are you won't. However I'm sure there's some fence sitters like a swing voter. Target them. My family and I are vaccinated. We were told the vaccines work, even last week the CDC said you're protected against Delta. If the unvaccinated want to throw caution to the wind, they know the risks and outcome. I'm well aware of it and chose to move on.

You can bet there are significant numbers of the area's theme park employees in those stats, and locals still make up big numbers of visitors to WDW. And although I only really look at Orange County as part of running this site, it is representative of a significant problem brewing in the USA. Being so close to the end of this is not a time to be burying heads in the sand and pretending everything is OK.

This may be the case, but interesting to note that Florida has the 11th best percentage of its population to get the vaccine since June 1st (8.8% since June 1). For the month of June Florida had the 10th best percentage, but currently they sit in 12th for the month of July.

To be fair, I shouldn’t say 100% anything. I’m not in OC and didn’t interview everyone. But, it is the case for me.

I live in a fully-vaccinated household and my ds14 came home from a youth camp with a head cold that got passed through everyone in the house except me. He then proceeded to catch ANOTHER respiratory virus last week, which the rest of us have been able to avoid so far (knock on wood). This has all been going on since June 13. We've had one good weekend since then where everyone was healthy and we felt we could return to normal activities. Then that second cold hit and we're back to partial "lock-down". Sigh. We're supposed to travel to see my in-laws next weekend and we're just not sure we'll be able to go. After that we have our WDW trip the first week of August. I'm really starting to come around on the idea of wearing masks indoors again. These last few weeks have been a real pain in the you-know-what.

I hear you. By the way, do you live in Iowa? I went to school in Des Moines and have nothing but good things to say about the city and time I spent there.

The real answer is vaccine enforcement for people who are maskless.

I get why that won't happen, but Disney World is not all of Orange County. Masks at Disney World will have a minimal impact IMO if Walmart and places of worship do not participate. If the Orange County numbers are local residents, I fail to see why they believe Disney World is a real solution. Spread will just happen outside of Disney with no blanket mandate in place.

Yes it needs to be a wide reaching effort, which is what Demings is asking for. But for the sake of talking about it here on WDWMAGIC, I have been attempting to keep things WDW related. And the Disney interest here is what, if anything, will Disney do.

I don’t know. I was specifically talking about Disney having to protect their guests in light of the mayors new request. It seems their guests do not need nor want protection. They are assuming their own risk. We are all vaccinated in our group and have only worn a mask on the bus and skyliner. The minute a guest steps off the bus the mask gets ripped right off. Nobody wants them. Don’t even get me started at the complete waste of these disposal masks that are being handed out on the bus and skyline. Guests wear one for 7 minutes then right in the trash. Thousands of guests a day. Completely wasteful!! But I digress.

Is it though? The pandemic raged through major cities last winter despite nearly 100% mask wearing compliance. Masks were all we had back then. They are archaic now that we have a vaccine. People need to get vaccinated, plain and simple.

I've said it a few times already, but the problem is we know that a large portion of the general population does not care about the well being of others. So given the fact they those individuals choose not to do the right thing, we are left with the only option of businesses enforcing masks and distancing. This is what the Orange County mayor is asking for.

Well, we are not left with that as the only option. We also have the option of simply doing nothing aside from trying to encourage vaccines, and letting whatever happens with Covid happen. That may not be a good option, but it is an option, and it is the option I think is most likely to occur.

Masks and distancing and vaccinations got Orange County to below 5% 14 day positivity rate. Removing masks and distancing has put Orange County north of 11% and climbing.
