That isn’t even remotely true. That’s been the problem with Covid from the start, people think in such absolutes. If a case occurs in schools while kids are masked that means masks aren’t 100% effective 100% of the time so drop them. Nobody ever said masks were 100% effective all of the time. They reduce spread, they don’t eliminate it. That’s always been the case. Having spread in a school while kids are masked provides no evidence whatsoever that masks are ineffective in slowing spread. It is only proof they aren’t 100% effective in stopping all spread.

At my son's elementary school, they stay in the classroom, but distanced, for lunch. And yes...unmasked. Words can't express how happy it makes me that my son's class is only 6 kids.

(ETA: a typical class in our area is typically 23-30 kids)

My company has a very strict masking policy, all desks are social distanced, temperature and symptom checks before entering the building and a very rigorous process if someone in the building is found to be infected. So far we have not had any infections within the building that we know of.

We had a strict policy since the building re-opened. Masks and temp checks and limited capacity. This return to the office plan is a little suspect to me. We have an open office with just desks and no cubicles (like the picture below). The desks are closer than 6 feet apart but if we are going down to 3 feet we may be in compliance.

Aren't the kids unmasked during lunch?

While eating, yes. They sit at desks spaced over 6 feet apart and they eat then they spend the rest of the lunch period outside unless it’s raining the they go back to the classroom. In the classroom they wear masks all the time including the teachers but the desks are less than 6 feet apart. It has worked so far.

It's time to start shunning the 'vaccine hesitant.' They're blocking COVID herd immunity.

Enough analysis of these human petri dishes. Everyone who wants a vaccine will soon have one, and proof should be required to work, play and travel.

Parts of my office use desks like this. Fortunately me and most of my team are in a less open area that has normal cubes so people are much more separated.

Very good post.

I’m not anti-vaccine but it’s true that the vaccines were rushed and that are still not fully approved, only approved for emergency use. There have been a few rare, serious reactions to the J&J and Pfizer vaccines that are concerning.

Those are facts.

Can you provide links to these studies?

I have zero interest in hunting for original source studies from my phone, but it's out there.

Masks are useful when indoors and unable to maintain distancing. They're unnecessary when kids are stationary at desks, facing the same direction, distanced from one another. They *are* useful in hallways or I guess if your schools have dumpy little classrooms where everyone is on top of each other.

And there are studies that indicate distancing can't be maintained, because many schools don't have the space. The big one that changed CDC guidance specifically. Schools reported they failed with distance, but kept up masks.

This is silly lowest common denominator thinking. Masks are useful in some schools, so we must make masks mandatory in all schools, is that your position?

I read about that.

Two things stuck out at me in the article I read...

1) The evidence is anecdotal.
2) There is no corroborating evidence in the US or Germany.
