Fauci has become a real blow hard lately. He’s completely towing the political line and slow playing things. High school students will all be eligible for the Pfizer vaccine likely by April or May at the latest depending on when the trial ends and how soon we have enough doses for them. No reason to assume a bit into fall. That’s not even being conservative, just being lame.

I think I recently stood up for you...but we gotta get that fever that’s heating up your brain under control.

Fauci is much more of a politician and bureaucrat than a scientist at this point. He is easily the most duplicitous scientist I have ever heard speak. Not saying he is a blowhard, but at this point to call him anything other than a pundit would be a gross exaggeration of his actual position.

So after a year of politicizing every single thing said to benefit one grifter...you’re searching for more politicos under the cushions now.

My take? He was being honest when he said fall, and then the administration told him to hedge—there are midterm elections next year, and it is better to underpromise and over deliver than the opposite (ask the last administration). Some hedging is appropriate because often times, science doesn’t choose to cooperate in the way we hope, but is is still saddening to see a continuing politicization of this issue. It is clearly being used by the controlling party to be a selling point next year. I don’t blame the politicians; I just wish science was allowed to be apolitical.

There are always some sense of politics. But this seems more on the level of human psychology.

They just cannot give people more than they can mentally handle...which let’s face it: is hardly anything. Better to cast the net and draw it back than not reach the fish In the first place.

Slow walking and hedging are fine, we all accept it in a lot of situations (Disney’s line wait signs, etc.)

What I will not accept is keeping restrictions in place if there is no reason, if there comes a time when community spread has clearly ceased, those need to be dropped in a timely manner.

I think the problem is that’s not happening yet.

So how are they doing it in Canada? Indoor dining is still closed there correct

Depends. Indoor dining never closed again in BC (outside of last Spring) surprisingly. They just basically banned any socialization beyond your household during the Winter, but within your household you were somewhat free to continue doing most activities. It strangely worked alright.

Which leads me to say that I don't think indoor dining is really a major risk inherently, but rather what it implies to many people. Unfortunately restaurant dining is equated to social gatherings of unrelated parties. If you can separate out the two I don't think the act of dining in and of itself is the worst thing one can do - alone or with your household. Same with movie theatres. Allowing actual adequate distancing of course.

I can't shake the feeling that spring break is coming and they want to squeeze in a few more tables. And the cost for safety theater is "be stricter with masks." Or even things like tightening up the window between bookings to hopefully flip a few more tables. So more people might be waiting around to be seated.

Ah ok. My relatives are in Ontario and it sounds pretty locked down there. I thought it was all of Canada but I guess it’s different depending on which province just like in the states.

The science has been clear/correct for almost a year: mask maximization leads to aerosol minimization. IMO this is to "prevent" guests from lingering inside restaurants because they want to keep their masks off for a little bit longer.

Possibly. It depends on what you mean by that. Of course, if you're going to have a mask requirement, it makes sense that people wear masks when they are waiting for their table, or even when they've ordered but are waiting for the food to be delivered. But even with something as serious as Covid, you have to balance the protection with a degree of practicality. Asking people to take the mask on and off in between bites of food is crossing the line into stupidity. Wear your mask in, keep it on until food is delivered to the table, then remove it and keep it off until you are done with your meal. Unless folks are sitting and having 25 minute conversations in between bites, I believe that is entirely reasonable.

I think you're right. My husband and I are going in May and we will both be fully vaccinated. I suspect by that time there's a good chance the people working in the restaurant will also be vaccinated. Even so, I don't expect the mask rules to be different by then, so we are prepared to follow them. We've only dined out twice in the past year, and we kept our masks on while ordering out of consideration for the server. But once the bottle of wine hits the table, I don't believe it's reasonable to expect us to keep wearing masks even if we're taking a good amount of time conversing while dining. I don't expect to be hassled about it, but I'll definitely report back here if we are.

Perhaps the people who like to sit at tables for an hour with their masks off while not eating. Saw this at Pecos Bill’s, Satu’li, and Andy’s Lunch Box. Pretty annoying when you need a table to actually eat.

Just seems like they’re coming up with new ulterior motives in the swamp now.

Could be because they are seeing consistently larger crowds, or now that the numbers are going down and people are getting vaccinated they are becoming more complacent.
