Did anyone see that press conference this morning?? It was great. Good news or bad news, its reassuring to have people educating the American public about what's really going on.

It was refreshing to see competent people talk about the pandemic and let the scientists take lead on how we will get through this.

Years ago I took three teenage nieces to the Magic Kingdom on New Years Eve.

Place was packed like sardines. We held hands and threaded our way through the crowd. We watched the fireworks all around us. Crazy crowds , zero social distancing, but lots of fun.

I had the opposite reaction for Epcot on NYE when my daughter was ~7. After the midnight fireworks they didn't open the bypass paths by Canada/Mexico, so the whole crowd tried to shuffle over to the north end of the lagoon. We ended up getting pushed off into the side gazebo (where Duffy used to have a M&G) and were in a packed mass of humanity that wasn't moving. I had my daughter on my shoulders so she didn't get crushed and it was frankly terrifying. My wife goes into mosh pits at rock concerts and has sworn she will never go back on NYE.

Yes that would not be fun.

In my case I am 6’2” 210 lbs . Leading my almost adult nieces as a human train I was able to see the best path in threading through the crowds.

Other than the extra special fireworks on NYE and the night before the crowds make it not an optimal time to enjoy the rides in the oark.

I’ve had that experience at MK as well. I still go for nye but I have an expert plan to avoid those crowds which are indeed terrifying.

I agree with what you are saying, but the problem is there are people who are warry of these vaccines because they only took 10 months to develop. It is important for these people to understand the years of research that led up to this. Even though these are the first mRNA vaccines, there have been human trials of other mRNA vaccines as far back as 2011.

I was one of those people last year, so I certainly understand. Too bad that nobody is making a TV special about the history of the mRNA vaccine development with non-political commentators. I think we would be in a much better place if Katalin Kariko was as widely known as Fauci. She has been working on the mRNA technology since 1990.

That 10 month vaccine only took 30 years to develop...

You are aware that the fireworks shells fell back there?

By back there do you mean the auxiliary exits? I was not. They had them open after the 6PM fireworks, I found it odd they did not have them open after the midnight fireworks. I hindsight, we should have just hid out between Mexico and Norway and waited for the crowd to pass. (Or, go to bed early and just hit rope drop the next day while everyone else is sleeping in.)

No I think this is just rumor so far. We may hear more about it later on. Today they mainly talked about vaccine supply and distribution and dealing with new strains.

Heard over the radio that 50% Ohio nursing home workers declined to get vaccinated when they were offered doses. The state is therefore opening up to vaccinating teachers with thousands of doses originslly allocated for nursing homes.

I understand the second part, sad that so many people opted out yet work around vulnerable population ( Though the elderly living there have a higher vaccine rate(70%)

IIRC, one theory on the clustering behavior says that it is an evolutionary holdover. People in clusters feel safer both by virtue of the number of people seemingly offering protection and because were something to attack, you as an individual have less chance of being the target vs you being out on your own.

A quick update from my Mom. She had her first shot of Pfizer two weeks ago after getting an appointment at the Hard Rock Stadium site. At the time they told her just to come back on 2/2 whenever she wanted for the second shot. Today, she got a call from the State of Florida customer service (that's what she said the person called themselves) to schedule her second shot appointment time on 2/2. It appears that there is some kind of logistics actually happening and they aren't just winging it as is the perception of some.

Similar experience on the other coast. My mother had her first Pfizer vaccine on 1/6 at the Strawberry Festival grounds. She was given her second appointment for 1/27 at the same time as the first. During the 3 weeks between shots, Hillsborough county changed the company administering the shot, so I had to register her a second time. But, they gave us a code to pull over her information and there was no issue with the second appointment.

Interestingly, my wife tells me that the crowds at the Festival grounds were much smaller than they were the first time. That is a little strange since you should have the same number of people getting vaccines as before. I wonder if folks are not going back for the second dose.

Still, my wife and I are happy that we got mom in, and that she has not had any adverse reactions at all.

Florida has been catching hell with the media because the state is reserving the second dose when you get the first, but that plan is working. When Cuomo even Cuomo is complaining about the erratic weekly distribution to the states, I don't see how you can do anything other than reserve the doses.

It looks like second doses given per day is exceeding new cases per day by a good margin. Next good goal will be more completed series than total cases but that's probably a month out.

I think it would be stupid not to withhold the second dose. I'd rather have fewer people vaccinated properly than more people stressfully waiting for the second dose to be available.

If you want to really kill domestic air travel volume implement this. Don't more people travel interstate by car than air anyway? What about them?

Agreed on the vaccine part, especially. Now that vaccines are rolling out, it makes for a common sense incentive for vaccine acceptance, to avoid the testing requirement if you’ve been vaccinated.

I guess I see international testing because we don’t know how other nations are doing with vaccine compliance, mix & match in the UK, etc. but for domestic travel, it seems a bit silly to not have a “vaccine passport,” especially with interstate road travel remaining wide open and the mask requirements on planes now having the teeth of an EO.
