Regardless of how you read it, it is still suggesting that Iger tried to sell because of the risk of a catastrophic event. In other words, Gary is trying to put a current “spin” on the original article.

Surely the actual reason he tried to sell is, as you said, “he thought the parks were an unstable, mature business that cost too much to operate, required too much continual investment and had no room for growth”. This is a genuine, plausible reason for trying to sell a business.

Iger was part of the company on September 11, 2001 when a catastrophic event occurred and resulted in years of suppressed business at the parks. The pandemic is a current event that is hurting the parks and will likely hurt them for years.

In regards to what? Mainland China is a huge market and Shanghai Disneyland is a deal Eisner couldn’t/wouldn’t make.
