Looking at #splashmountain on Insta was a mistake. It seems like more people are happy than sad about the news. Guess I'll finally get to understand how old Epcot fans feel like.

That's what I've been (sadly) trying to tell everyone here for years. (Specifically in regard to Impressions de France)

huh? America. The USA. I'm referring to the actual term 'African American'. When you add the word AMERICAN on the end of someone its because they have a certain race or heritage but was actually born on AMERICAN soil, who are from the United States.

I’d bet good money it’s not actually controversial today. In fact, up until about 2 weeks I don’t think hardly anyone thought about Splash Mountain’s “inherent racism.”

I literally went back and re-watched it (in segments) on YouTube today just to make sure my recollection of it wasn't off. I heard so many people saying, "The movie isn't racist!" and "Have you even SEEN the movie?" that I figured maybe I had misremembered.

The live-action segments are certainly problematic. But they’re also so melodramatic that if Disney would’ve just licensed this to Criterion a decade ago, the taboo aura would’ve worn off when people realized it’s a lousy movie anyway!

I just wanted to blow your mind by telling you that I read constantly, have an English lit. degree...AND YET I still have time to read this forum and be upset about SM being rethemed.

ehhhh, the discourse has existed since at least I was young. I remember getting excited to go to DL for the first time when I was 8 (12 years ago) and seeing people being upset about the ride’s roots. I eventually got super interested about SotS and found a rip and was like wow....that was doo-doo

It's on the rumored list of attractions to look at in response to the new BLM protests.

As I've mentioned, the movie part has already been updated to address slavery and continued need for vigilance of civil rights. But maybe they'll get more specific.

An oft-touted suggestion is to stop having the current president give a speech to stop the partisanship dragged into the theater.

The media certainly banged that drum until people believed it.

I’ve seen people on these boards call out IASW because they equate cartoon versions of “historical cultural diversity” with “racism.” “It’s so racist because they’re dressed in historical stereotypes no one wears anymore!” All right, let’s put all the kids in the same clothes. Which ones do you approve? Twenty-first century American versions? Hypocrites.

Who is buying the tickets? That's who a sane person would attempt to appeal to. Was this change being demanded by a majority of people that buy tickets? Or a screaming minority, most of whom would never pay for a ticket?

That's the thing about Disney. They can appeal to the "screaming minority," while the majority still buys tickets.

What’s your opinion about it?

I love the animation. I like that it tries to weave folk tales (the animated parts) in with live-action. But the portrayal of African Americans as happy-go-lucky minstrel types who long for the good old days, along with some of the slang and the interaction between black and white characters is racist. The tar-baby is racist. The live-action bookends are pretty poorly written and produced. I can see why Disney would not stand behind the film today, and why they do not appreciate the ongoing connection of the ride to the film.

All I can say is I feel overwhelmed, like I woke up this morning ready to start my day and as I did I was gut punched by thoughts of the untouchable attractions shutting down after Splash, and it seems some of the attractions I love such as COP might see that fate which just stresses me out even more. When splash’s retheme was announced, I felt gutted not necessarily because splash mountain was getting a retheme, because I already was preparing myself to see an announcement, but gutted knowing what the future may hold for the top untouchable attractions, the ones that Disney needs, like HM, POTC, or IASW. Knowing that COP might meet the ugly fate stitch did makes me very upset, and there’s so much stress going on right now with the virus and even some stress in my personal life, it’s just insanity and it feels like stress will keep piling on. Last year in August when I joined because of a thread about the possible return of Journey Into Imagination, I would have never predicted this...

Because of the pandemic, Disney is having trouble getting their hands on enough TNT to blow it up.

Cute but why keep it open for any length of time now? Why let more guests be exposed to something that Disney clearly wants to distance itself from ASAP? Is that not a "bad look"?

Except I understand that people will miss the ride including me. But what I don’t understand is why people like you claim that the whole operation including the people who are fine with it must be a communist? Some things in this country really don’t change do they.. You would be right at home in the red scare, which maybe defends why theme park rides should never change when people like you don’t either.
