DeSantis briefing - limiting movements for all Floridians. Only essential travel allowed.

The order, which will start Thursday at midnight, will be in effect for at least the next 30 days, DeSantis said.

I'd much rather sick people just stayed at home. Doesn't matter if its flu, covid, common cold. If you are coughing and sneezing a lot just stay at home.

Many people are reluctant to cancel any pre-paid portion of their trip.
And it isn't just the $, it is also the emotional investment they have made.

Very ill people might even be MORE emotionally invested in getting to see WDW one last time.

Although I agree, I can understand why no administration prepared for this no matter who was President or which party held the house, senate or both.

Nothing like this has happened since 1918/1919 with the Spanish flu. I can understand why, starting a few decades later, nobody would think it would be necessary.

Even experts that thought a pandemic was possible never envisioned a disease that could be very serious and deadly for a small, but significant percentage of patients but also have extremely mild symptoms (or no symptoms) in a large percentage and, at the same time, be highly contagious. It is a truly unprecedented situation.

(Hoping this doesn't count as politics...) yes, it does count as politics. Moderator

You are incorrect. The National Security Council under the Obama administration anticipated a widespread worldwide pandemic and developed a playbook for responding to it. During the transition period between administrations, they provided this playbook to the incoming Trump administration and warned them to expect it to be needed. The current NSC failed to follow the playbook.

"The U.S. Coast Guard has directed all cruise ships to remain at sea where they may be sequestered "indefinitely" during the coronavirus pandemic and be prepared to send any severely ill passengers to the countries where the vessels are registered."
Sadly for some passengers, this will mean being sent to countries such as Panama, Liberia and Netherlands which is supposedly discouraging the use of ICUs for the elderly.

If the cruise lines want to save their reputations and if they're as broke as they claim they should sell or mortgage a few ships and use the money to evacuate passengers to their home countries.

I speculate that the gambling profits alone from the cruise ships still at sea would probably pay for evacuation and first class care for all of their passengers.

Sell their ships to whom? Other cruise line companies who are also losing money by the day?

Regarding gambling, I doubt that any casinos are open on the ships right now. Don’t know for sure, but it sounds highly unlikely.

RE: the new Free Dining offer from WDW (post from a few pages back)

I suspect that Disney has never thought they would be opening in this time period and that the announcement of the offer was simply a way of trying to gauge how strong their market of "committed" customers is likely to be when they are able to open up. This will give them data on how many resorts they may need to open up and how many they can afford to mothball. If the numbers are low -- even with a free dining offer -- they can adjust prospective staffing levels and their financial projections accordingly.

WDW gets a little cash flow from the deposits.

For how long? Thanks

Uefa have officially cancelled Champions and Europa leagues too. If you follow that kind of stuff. I’m still waiting for the Six Nations to finish.
Love the Champions League! It's such a fun tournament that doesn't really compare to anything in the United States. Hala Madrid!

Of course, it was also sad to see scientists suggesting the one Champions League game may be responsible for some of the outbreaks in Spain and Italy.

I just realized that my FuboTV subscription was automatically renewed today. I have cable, only pay the outrageous FuboTV fee so we can watch all LaLiga matches and international tournaments (unfortunately US networks only show Premier League games, not even El Clasico).. I have ESPN+ separately for Serie A. I need to call and cancel both. There’s no reason to pay that at this time.
I wonder how many people are doing the same.

If it's anything like Leon County, employees can still go to work at the office or telework based on their situation. You can still leave the house, get food, run errands, etc. But otherwise, you're encouraged to stay home, especially overnight. It's not a lockdown. So probably no different than the Leon County stay at home order under I'm under now.

Dad's April 7th lung surgery in Indy was canceled due to needing a ventilator afterwards. The original plan was removing as much of the cancer cells as possible before chemo. Now it's all on pause and waiting on doctors to decide if there will be alternative treatment. My understanding is all surgeries are having to be assessed and approved through the board of directors. All we have now is it will be at least 2 more weeks before surgery would be plausible. So in other words he possibly doesn't get surgery until we are past what they assume is the peak. Even his doctor is angry with the decision to cancel. It's just insane right now that hospitals are even in this position of choosing by odds of long-term survival.

I'll have to read the whole playbook when I have time but the Obama administration certainly didn't stock up on PPE and other medical supplies in advance in preparation. If they did, the would have been in the stockpile already.

Once I have had a chance to read it, hopefully we can discuss the contents without getting into a political discussion (which is the last thing I normally want to do and especially don't now).

Interesting info.
Fauci's boss was standing next to him. So he had to come up with something quick. A researcher from MIT and their opinion, I would listen to.
Dr. Fauci is not the end all be all. There are educated researchers such as the one from MIT offering their opinions. Irresponsible? Like and educated opinion from an MIT researcher. If it is accurate, reality and the truth sometimes hurts.

First of all, the NY Post is a rag. You can tell by the sensationalized clickbait title of the article.

Second of all, one scientist's 'study' is not "science." It just a finding which needs to be appraised by the scientific community.

The scientist claims that the current guidelines are based on info from the 30s. Wouldn't it be nice if there were other, more up-to-date studies to inform those guidelines? Oh, yeah, there are. Dozens and dozens of them.

Here's one from his alma mater just six years ago...

So, Dr. Fauci is fully aware of what the medical consensus is... and who are the fringe outliers. Why would anyone think a lone MIT researcher has better information than the head of NIH? Preposterous. You're really upending the tiers of who has better information. Fauci and his whole organization far outweighs a single researcher.

The guidelines presume people aren't launching uncovered sneezes in enclosed spaces. You cover your mouth and it's not going 27 feet.

Don't let this become a conspiracy theory that the medical establishment is suppressing the truth!!!
