And what about the cliche the admiral needs to stay behind on the cruiser...

What, the cruiser doesn't have auto pilot?

No one wants to sacrifice one of their precious droids???

The whole rebels-on-the-run arc is pretty forced and thin

Yes people will give a movie, especially a sci-fi/fantasy movie a few passes but the amount of stupid nonsensical things in TLJ was overwhelming.

Not related to the movie, but most of the trailers that were shown before did not interest me at all.
The ones that did?
Ready Player One
Infinity War
And maaaaybe A Wrinkle in Time

The kids next to me were getting incredibly restless and were frustrated every time a new trailer started playing. I knew it was probably doubtful that two Marvel trailers would have played before it, but I would not have said no to New Mutants or Black Panther (I’m super into the design of that film).

The scene I did like.

The Snoke kill scene I thought was great, even though much of it was taken from ROTJ. Snoke was a great villian, showing off his power but blinded to Kylo's true feelings. The best part of the movie to me was when Rey and Kylo were fighting together. It was electric and immediately conjured up images of them becoming a team, starting a "new order" of balance. But then that didn't happen and the rest of the movie was a let down.

It turns out it wouldn’t have been hard to kill her off as she was shot into space. Should could have died a graceful death right there rather than going all Mary Poppins on us. All remaining scenes of her were reaction shots anyway and not relevant to the story. They could have cut around those.
I wish they had done that, really.

Everyone of a certain age knows Carrie passed away. The scene of her freezing had a lot of "angel" imagery. And, I'd be ok with a "force spark" or something, that wakes Luke up and changes his resolve...etc...etc...

But, yeah, it will be interesting to see what they do in IX without her. Will they stick with their promise not to resurrect her with CGI? If so, that means what...the opening crawl will be "Princess Leia is dead. The Resistance is on the run. The Galaxy has fallen to the might of the First Order, but one spot of hope remains. Maz Kanata..."

Yes, but they've been pretty consistent with respecting the fact that there is no gravity in space. Like when Han Solo floated away with the rest of the garbage. I'm so mad.
They bombed the asteroids in ESB.

Y-wings are bombers meant to attack heavy cruisers, and you see them do exactly that in ROJ.

The tactic was actually fairly consistent with established SW battle doctrine.

But, I think, the difference is...the "bombs" were more torpedos on the other ships. Not gravity bombs on racks trying to make references to Memphis Belle style WWII bombing runs as the bombers make a super slow run...

And, then...one bomber takes the whole thing out?

....meh....

Viewer rating is closer to 50%.

That's RT's self-taking poll. Self-taking polls are notorious for being out and out wrong. It's what certain news channels use to create a false sense of what "the people think." But if you think self-taking polls are accurate, then IMDB's self-taking poll gives TLJ an 8/10. So, you have two self-taking polls, one's at 50% the other's at 80% which is right?

comScore’s PostTrack uses a more scientific sampling of people who have actually seen the movie found that 68% rated “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” as “excellent” and another 21% as “very good.” A total of 82% said they would “definitely recommend” the film.

CinemaScore which also does sampling of an audience that has actually seen the movie gave it an "A" rating.

So, it seems that RT's poll is the outlier. Using that to bolster an argument that "people didn't like it" is, FakeNews.

Even though I greatly enjoyed the mutiny Poe Dameron, Connix, and the other Resistance soldiers, had Holdo just laid out the plan instead of withholding it from Poe, we could've completely avoided the forced real world politics of Canto Bight and that awful scene at the end with the child slave.

Which is why I don't use any of them to bolster an argument. In fact, my point in bringing it up is that, critic ratings alone, and frankly box office numbers, shouldn't bolster whether a film is "good" or not.

Average them, you end up with a 7/10, or 8/10 (as you noted). I gave it 3.5 stars on RT myself (didn't bother to write a review). And, that feels about right.

But...the statement "this movie is amazing and you are wrong because this website says it is an A" is just as poorly supported as "well, this other site metric says it is a D"...

And that was why I mentioned it.

Kylo did something, Anakin would’ve wished he had done during his ascension to Darth Vader, overthrow his master and take the reigns of the galaxy. Yes, ultimately he did, but, not in the immediate fashion as Kylo did it. His invitation to Rey to join him was reminiscent to the times where Vader went over his intentions to Padmè, later on to Luke and invited them over to his side. Where his beliefs may differ from Palpatine’s but he still would’ve ruled with an iron-fist. No, despite Kylo being young and naive, he clearly knows what he wants to accomplish and that is dominance over the galaxy. Some may disagree but that was my interpretation of what went down.

The fighting sequences in this film were hands down amazing. The quick-spontaneous teaming of Kylo and Rey against Snoke’s Royal Guards left me wanting more. Kylo’s sneaky assassination of Snoke was jaw-dropping even if some may have seen it coming. Snoke was an idiot anyway, no one likes an arrogant know-it-all.

I was in awe when witnessing Leia using her Force abilities for the first time on screen, I thought to myself, this has got to be the best demonstration of using the Force as a way of survival... Then Luke showed up using his Force-projection ability, which tells us that he surpassed the abilities of even his fathers. Luke managed to fool Kylo in that bout, showing the audience that Kylo has much to learn. Yet, he has no master. Kylo has taken over the reigns, thus, tyranny will be at large in the foreseeable future.

Yoda... My God, his wisdom, his wit. Loved it! I’ll admit, I was hoping to see Anakin appear coming from out of the ancient Jedi tree that was engulfed by flames. Oh well.

All in all, The Last Jedi was a beautifully made film from start to finish. The series is heading into an interesting direction.

Can anyone explain why the First Order isn’t suiting all of the stormtroopers in whatever material Phasma had on? She was much harder to kill in that armor.

No - many things in the movie can't be explained other than "yeah, that will look cool."
If my memory is right, her armor is made from the plating of one of Palpatines old ships. It was in the comic or novel I think. So its not really a common material.

things I didn't like.

Luke milking alien teet.

Luke brushing off his shoulder. Someone else said they were waiting for him to start dabbing.

Fish people showing up a day on island out of nowhere. Did someone say, "hey, we forgot to put aliens on the island."

"Dark" part of the island/black seaweed hole/house of mirrors. It was set up to mean something but in the end was a big nothing but wasted 20minutes of screen time.

Casino scene. Again, looks like it was put in last minute. The CGI was terrible and it looked more like a cheap James Bond film than a SW movie, it didn't make much sense unless to mark off some political messaging/virtue signaling check marks.

Boring, stupid "running out of fuel" chase story line.

Mary Poppins Leia. In addition to it just being dumb, it took away from the best part of the scene - Kylo's conflict knowing his Mother was on board. When he didn't shoot but one of the other Tie-Fighters did, he was so enraged that he shot down that Tie-fighter. This was diminished if not forgotten when Leia did her stunt.

Force "phone sssex" C'mon now.

Luke's death and twin suns. Luke's death was dumb enough then they throw in the twin suns to help ease the pain?

Yoda - God of thunder. I liked Yodi in the movie, but this was the first time we've seen "Force ghosts" not only able to exert their power in the living world, but to a degree much more powerful than we've ever seen from Yoda. The heck with Luke, bring Force ghost Yoda back to fight Snoke!

Yoda's pep talk - I actually like it. It seems he convinces Luke that he must train Rey, then in the end Luke just stays on the island, does his projection thing and dies.

Luke projection thing/Matrix fight. The person who came up with that should be fired.

The incredible ease it was to come and go onto First Order ships. Kinda nit picking but nobody seemed to have a problem coming and going on to/off of most advanced military machine in the Galaxy.

The amazing amount of potential conflict the story had, none of which was used. Long stretches of the movie were simply predictable, non sensical and boring.

I now care less about Rey than after TFA. After she beat Kylo in TFA I so much wanted to know more about her, see more about her, and care more about her. After TLJ I really don't care anymore.

Forced humor throughout the film - the muted audience reaction in my theater said it all.

I also didn't like the Moz Kanata scene - seemed too contrived.

Excuse the nerd interruption, but...
The bombs are magnetically propelled out of the chamber per the visual dictionary. Debates about whether you should need external sources to legitimize in movie logic, notwithstanding. There was a reasoning behind it.
