It wasn't Bob Iger, I'm pretty sure... ;)

I learned heard back in my DECA days that it was some early department store magnate -- probably Macy or Wanamaker...

Yep,
Harry Selfridge... whom I've always been mildly intrigued by..and then when PBS had a show about him I was thrilled.

Anyway, he definitely used it to his advantage, and customers reacted favorably.
It was something of a new trend at that time. Marshall Field has also been credited with the phrase.
