Mulan's new look

Maleficent and Evil Queen have gotten updates as well. The only place I've seen them used is the Club Villain show.

Hmm. I like Maleficent's facial prosthetics and they got rid of them a while ago. Assuming cost. What other changes were made? I'd like to see both if you have pics!

I actually don't have any photos. I simply searched online and saw the differences.

I don't think either Mulan or Pocahontas' outfits are bad, but I just don't get why any of the princesses needed to be redesigned. They looked fine before. I don't think they need more jewelry and accessories added to their outfits, because they didn't have them in their movies. If Disney changes their look too much they can start to become unrecognizable (like Mulan here ...).

I'm not sure if these are 'official' updates. Club Villain is run by the Disney Event Group and they often use costumes not used in normal park operations. The Queen of Hearts is a face character at Club Villain and will remain a fur character in the parks as far as I'm aware.

Mulan's outfit looks good. Not unlike what she wore at the very end of the movie. Pocahontas looks good, too; her old outfit, while true to the movie, had a bit of a Wilma Flintstone vibe in real life.

It seems like most of the new costumes for the Princesses are trying to go for a bit of verisimilitude- if these were actual flesh & blood people, is this something that would look plausible? To go back to the Aurora dress, as there was a bit of a kerfuffle about that here, the original dress looked exactly like what it was- a costume. The new dress looks like something someone could conceivably wear to a fancy dress ball.

It is probably all about marketing and merchandise...If you want to sell princess costumes, the dresses all have to have big skirts because that's what little girls want...so Mulan is slowly transforming into a more european princess gown... the bodice is morphing from a sash over a robe to a constructed corsolette, and the bottom of the robe is becoming a hoop skirt... a real cross cultural mess and so unnecessary...I guess in a few years Pocohontas will have a fringed beaded buck skin hoop skirt and big poofy up-do with feathers...ugh
They need to go back to the source material and keep the charcters looking at least like what they are representing...

You guys seem to be failing to realize that these changes are happening in part because of merchandising. If The characters are wearing something new, that's a new plush or a new princess dress that they can sell in the stores (among many other things). They've done it before, wouldn't be surprised if that's a big motivator here, too.

I think most people here do know that, but just don't approve of the off model directions in which they're heading in.

The thing is, Mulan and Pocahontas make up a very small percentage of the Disney Princess marketing and merchandising. I don't doubt that it's related to that in some fashion, but you'll also note they weren't the first princesses to debut the new looks either. They made sure Cinderella, Belle, and Aurora went first.

Those are "show" variants - Cruella and Facilier have subtle differences too

Not destroy it, just trying to fix the horrifically inaccurate depictions of the cultures when the movies were animated.

I know the Costuming team worked with representations from the cultures to make more historically accurate looks. I'm not saying I like/dislike the dresses, just trying to provide understanding as to why the changes happened. I'm drastically simplifying the problems, but here were a couple of the points I heard:

In the case of Pocahontas - the material of the necklace in the movie would have been nearly impossible for Native American's in Virginia to acquire. It was more common to utilize shells & stones for decorative details on clothing and jewelry.

In the case of Jasmine - women of higher class and royalty dressed more conservative, those who exposed their mid drifts were often used in ways to please men... if you catch my drift.

I wish we seen Mulan in her "Ping" outfit more often.

Wait a minute...the person in the pictures of Mulan is different. How can Mulan be two different people....oh the horror!!!

Anyway - I think the changes are nice. When my 2 year old daughter (or any other child) wants to see Mulan or Pocohontas, she's not going to be pointing out the things that have been mentioned on the previous pages. She's just going to be happy to meet, hug and get a picture with them.

We see Merida in her non-formal dress with her bow all the time and we see Belle in her blue dress... Mulan is only in her formal dress for a small fraction of the time in the movies, I think it's high time we see Mulan as Ping around the park again... (I'm pretty sure they used to do that... right?)

Tiana is barely in her park dress in the movie at all, I bet it wouldn't even add up anywhere close to a minute of screen time.
