Mulan's new look

Word is Jasmine & Aladdin are getting make overs as well. This is the vague description I got "Jasmine will be well covered up, and the street rat will be making way for a prince".

Meh. That makes me kind of sad.

There are so many unnecessary character make overs going on right now, it's hard to keep up. But back to Jasmine and Aladdin ... THEY DON'T NEED TO BE CHANGED. Jasmine at the moment, while a little more bedazzled than she is in the movie, looks perfect. She represents the character great, without straying too far away from her animated version. Aladdin is pretty good too, even though he wears a shirt. However, if they put Aladdin in his prince outfit, what is that saying to everyone? That it's okay to pretend to not be yourself, and you'll only get the girl if you're a prince? That's not what the movie is about. The movie says "be yourself", and Aladdin gets Jasmine not because he's a prince (and a fake one at that) but because he had heart. That's why it's nice to see him in his street clothes, next to the pretty Jasmine.

If both characters get glamorized, then you start to lose who the characters are. They just become ultra pretty people you take pictures with. Covering up Jasmine is also a bad thing to do IMO. She's not covered up in the movie, so why should she be in the theme parks? Disney really needs to get in their head, that not everything needs to be super pretty/modernized. The princesses don't need to be redesigned with more glittery gowns, and crazier hair cuts. If you really want to "wow" people, make them look just like they do in the movies they come from. I'd be much happier seeing a character that looks like they jumped right out of their movie, then to see someone that vaguely looks like my favorite character in super nice clothes.

I don't understand why Pocahontas has a satchel like purse and her necklace is not her mother's necklace. Everything else is fine but the necklace is a major plot point.

Also Mulan's dress doesn't look anything she wears in the film. Don't get that one really at all.

Shanghai most likely financed these new looks, well at least Mulan.

After viewing this picture, which I believe is from the gardens at Shangai Disneyland, the new costume is similar to this look. Just not the same color

Mulan's new costume is fine, but I don't know about Pocahontas's new look. Is it just me, or is Disney trying to destroy the classical look of the characters? I mean, I wish to be enthusiastic about Pocahontas's new look, but I don't know what to say. I guess I might eventually get used to it. And I thought that some of the diehard fans like me are going to hate it.

Agree 110% that they don't need to change Jasmine. :)

I mean, Pocahontas's new costume is not bad, if they should of just kept her mother's necklace, then that would of been fine. But like I said, I have to eventually get use to it.

Not destroy it, just trying to fix the horrifically inaccurate depictions of the cultures when the movies were animated.

I know the Costuming team worked with representations from the cultures to make more historically accurate looks. I'm not saying I like/dislike the dresses, just trying to provide understanding as to why the changes happened. I'm drastically simplifying the problems, but here were a couple of the points I heard:

In the case of Pocahontas - the material of the necklace in the movie would have been nearly impossible for Native American's in Virginia to acquire. It was more common to utilize shells & stones for decorative details on clothing and jewelry.

In the case of Jasmine - women of higher class and royalty dressed more conservative, those who exposed their mid drifts were often used in ways to please men... if you catch my drift.

I get what you're saying but they're cartoon characters. If they were supposed to be historically correct none of them would exist except Pocahontas and the story would be very different.

In the movie, Pocahontas wears a necklace mostly of turquoise and the rest shell, which was available to the Natives at the time and of her tribe either through natural resources or trading.

I'm okay with pocahontas's new look, though I agree they should give her the old necklace back. Authentic or not, it was kind of a big deal in the movie.

As for Mulan, I don't mind the new dress, but she always looks so made up and uncomfortable. I wish they would bring back Ping-- she/he was so much fun to see out and about.
