I get that feeling of immersion when I first enter the park. With the area music and facades of Hollywood and Sunset boulevard I feel taken away. Sadly, those 2 areas are the only places in that park where that happen.

I like the Hollywood theme, I also love to listen to the music on Sunset BLVD (I love the big band swing!). Also Muppets is so funny and TSM is so fun to play.

We're not thrill ride fans either- so no TOT or RRC for us. BUT I'm surprised noone has mentioned the Animation Academy. I just adore those drawing classes. I could do it over and over. Always a different experience! 
Can't wait for our next visit in February so I can go again. We're actually planning 2 days there- between Star Tours being repeatable, TSM, GMR, Indiana Jones, Fantasmic, and the shows around the park- our days will be packed!

I like the Candy Cauldron , but for shopping they should ditchThe Planet Hollywood store .
I also liked the backlot tour , but the show needs an update it has a " Been there seen it feel " for me
My wife is a huge Muppets fan , But I wish they would make it more interactive and change the shows similar to Star Wars ,
Toy Story Mania is great !
The Little Mermaid is also !
Rock N Roll is just old to me , I wonder when they gonna change it to Hanna Montana ......lol

I've always felt DHS is like the California Adventure of WDW. It gets knocked more than any other park. I like it personally because there are a lot of nice things to see. However, I do understand that there are also some knocks to it. It is laid out poorly and has some attractions that create little interest. And then there is the blue hat. I get all of that and I think for a Disney park it is among the lower caliber. Obviously still a better day than Six Flags but because of all the space WDW has I never understand why they can't blow the roof on all those parks. I guess the best way to describe it is more of a bi-polar park. There are some great rides:
Tower of Terror
Aerosmith
Great Movie Ride
One Man's Dream
Mermaid
Beauty and the Beast
Toy Story Midway Mania
Star Tours (for those that love it)
But it follows with some of Disney's worst choices:
American Idol
Narnia
Backlot Tour
The rest of them are middle of the pack at best. But I'll look at the positive side, there is enough to do there but certainly room to improve. There is no reason this park can't be on par with Universal in every which way

I find Planet Hollywood in DHS offensive. A theme breaker. Like putting a McDonald's on Main Street.

I even swoon over details like the gate houses. Just look at how pretty they are! How they reinforce both the immersion into the time and place, and function to separate the front half of the park from the 'Studios' part of the park.
There is a theme to DHS. At the front half, you are in Hollywood - the one that never was and always will be. If you pass these gates, you enter the Studio, from left to right: Lucas Studios (Indy through to ST), Muppets Studios (Muppetland), 'Generic' Studios (SoA, LMA, BL, HISTK), Pixar, Disney (OMD, Narnia/PotC to VoTLM and the Animation Courtyard).
Sadly, I think they removed the gate houses recently, further confusing the theme.

I enjoy DHS for a lot of reasons but some of those reasons are the rides you are not interested. Granted I'm still a newb to WDW but I can't wait to walk up streets of America again. The feeling I get walking through there was great on my first trip. I also loved the Muppet's 3D show and the Indy stunt show.

It's my second favorite park because I'm a big fan of movies in general! Not to mention you can take a picture of a character from whatever new Disney film is/was out at the time like Up and Meet the Robinsons! But the two things I love most about the Studios is that it has Muppets 3D which is my favorite 3D show and Fantasmic which IMO is the best nighttime show in any of the parks, (no pun intended) it blows every night time show out of the water!

I love this park and will be paying it a visit in just a few weeks! Excluding Tower of Terror and Rock n Roller Coaster, two of my favorites, this park still stands tall.
First, most of the buildings you encounter are based on real, historic places in Hollywood. Check this out from Yesterland: http://www.yesterland.com/replicas.html http://www.yesterland.com/replicas2.html The streetmosphere characters on Hollywood and Sunset are unique to this park and put on a fun show for everyone.
Second, you mentioned liking the Great Movie Ride, so how about the Muppets? I am not aware of anywhere else you can get immersed in muppets, and the theater has some of the most fun Disney parks secrets around.
One of the things I always want to do is spend a little time in the Animation Academy and draw a Disney character. It is surprising to me that I can actually draw these characters to look like the real thing because I am terrible at drawing! I've drawn Mickey Mouse and then had him autograph the picture and take a photo with me and the signed product. I am not aware of anywhere else you can get such an awesome souvenir at no extra cost!
And if you are at the animation academy at the right time in the afternoons, you can meet characters who don't otherwise come out for meet and greets!
The revamped Star Tours really changed my impression of that attraction. Every trip is different and it is a fun ride. Who will be the rebel spy? Will it be you? Maybe!
Pixar Place is a happening place to be! The Midway Mania is always good for friendly competition with your travel mates. Who can get the high score? This is much more than a Wii game, too. At least my Wii games at home don't blast me with air and water in the face when I hit the high value targets.
Fantasmic is one of the best night shows around, with good seats for most everyone - no having to fight with last minute horn-ins for viewing spots!
There is so much fun stuff to do here that I always surprise myself at how fast the day goes by and there are things I wanted to do that didn't get done. The live shows - the photos you can capture from the grand finale of Lights, Motors, Action are phenomenal.

I am also not a big fan of the HS. I used to really like it a long time ago when the Back Lot Tour was still up to date, and Art of Animation was still there. The last time I was there was about 4 years ago after not having been there in years. We were not going to go at all, but I heard rave reviews for Fantasmic, so we made the effort to go one evening. I was so excited to see this show, and I ended up not liking it (my Mom thought it was awesome, so that made it worth while for me). The only thing I like there is the Great Movie Ride and Muppets 3D since I am also not a thrill ride person. I would like to see what Toy Story Mania is all about, but still not sure if it is worth our effort to visit there the next time we go.

At least not anymore than Prime Time Cafe represents Hollywood. Most of the "nostalgia" presented was originated from New York City during the 50's and slowly transferred to the West Coast later.

Planet Hollywood is an outside vendor, an actual real life, present day place to visit. What's more, a place that presents a version of Hollyood that I find clashes with the Disney version of Hollywood.Disney HOLLYWOOD Studio, Planet HOLLYWOOD...how can that be out of place?
