Hello, kids. Sorry it is so late but I have one humdinger of a rumor.

Wait. I don’t actually know what a humdinger is. Nevermind. This is huge, that’s all you need to know. We’re hearing a couple of shocking rumors about Disney resorts.

One, we’ve heard that Disney resort managers are being told that when the Art of Animation Resort opens next year late Spring/early summer 2012, Port Orleans Riverside will no longer accept groups of five. Instead, groups of five will have to book a deluxe resort or stay at one of the Animation Suites.

Next, we’re hearing that when the Animation Suites open, the entire Polynesian Resort will be closed. That’s right, I said closed. Something about asbestos and getting rid of it. Managers have been told that Saratoga Springs and Old Key West, resorts that rarely reach capacity, will handle those guests. We’ve heard that Downtown Disney is getting a new fireworks show to make this move more attractive for Saratoga Springs visitors.

Could it be true? I’m not exactly loving these rumors, but you have to admit they’re pretty delicious.

didnt the Contemporary and the Polynesian share the same building process? and built at the same time? so the Contemporary would have
asbestos also.

They took care of that at the Contemporary during the last refurb, or so I've been told.

Close the Poly?? I have a hard time believing they would do this, considering it is one of the top Resorts OP. I suppose anything is possible, but if it does happen this will be a disspointment. The Poly is one of the originals, and has a marvelous 'old school' 70s vibe to it which adds a lot to it's appeal to me. Asbestos? Yeah...that is possible considering the time frame it was built, but why wait until now to finally resolve that problem? I would think if that was the main issue, Disney would simply close one Longhouse at a time to remove the stuff or rebuild onsite instead of closing the entire Resort.

I sure hope this does not happen. The Poly rocks!

This just sounds like a retelling of the rumors and theories that have been floating around here for the last couple of days. I think that they've just come full circle.

Maybe close the Poly for a LENGTHY refurb but I doubt "close it close it."
The POR thing seems very likely to me though... And I don't like it. But I wonder if that will hurt that resort's bottom line? Its not like Art of Animation needs a selling point... Its new and will have all those characters and such - Really what MOST average folks want/expect from a Disney resort.
I have a family of 5 and we've stayed at POR 4 times now. Its perfect for us, although as everyone gets bigger, it gets harder...

There's no reason to close the entire Polynesian resort for any reason whatsoever. Each separate building can be refurbed individually.

As for the POR thing, *shrug*. Could be true, probably isn't.

Well it seems that the Fire Works display planned for DTD is actually plausible, I have read news about it here on WDW Magic and at other sites. Guess we shall see!

I know it is a long shot, but it seems like the new Hyperion Warf could fit Wolrd of Color and such a show would be a HUGE draw to DTD on nights it plays

True! However it would be difficult to run a resort when the main building houses the front desk, majority of the restaurants and stores. Without these facilities up and running at full capacity the Poly would be hindered doing business.

Yes it would be nice but as has been discussed before World of Color requires a man made lake, so I don't think it would be possible to do this in DTD.

My place of business is FULL of asbestos and I have seen a lot of abatement work. There is really no reason to shut down the main building while abatement work is going on. All they would need to do is isolate the area they are working in with plastic tarps and possibly negative pressure (think of the house on ET when the government came in). Doing his would allow them to shuffle around all the necessary areas such as the hosts stations and keep the main building open.

I just don't get the reason for this. I can see where a man made lake would make it easier to drain the area for construction and maintenance but to be honest this could also be achieved by having the rig capable of raising out of the water or placing them on a special barge.

Village Lake is technically a man-made lake fed by the canal system. Disney could probably get away with extensively modifying the shoreline if needed.

World of Color, in its existing setup, needs more than just a man-made body of water, even Seven Seas Lagoon is man-made. The show's equipment needs a body that is totally artificial, isolated from other water sources with a solid lining and a filtration system.

Weren't several of the Polynesian longhouses built years after the resort opened? So would they be in need of asbestos removal? And why wasn't the asbestos removed during the last Polynesian refurb, I wonder...

There was another thread aboat this and in there it said that they will need to taket the building down totaly and rebuild. That this would be the easier way to go instead of tring to reburb.

The asbestos removal for the Polynesian might have to close the entire resort especially if they have to close the main building. But I am thinking they would close the whole resort so they can start anew and be able to refit things so they can configure a DVC resort somewhere in there, since there isn't a lot of room for one there now.
