Probably a battery. I bought a Jafar staff, that was used in a show out at Disneyland and there is a place for a battery and you push a buttom and the eyes glow red. It's great on Halloween the kids love it.

I got one years and years ago at "Aladdin: On Ice." No joke. My mom tried to convince me that it'd break within a few months, but years later, whenever you activate it, it's mouth opens, it's tongue pops out, and it's eyes and tongue glow read. It's really a pretty impressive toy.
