DCA's new Games of the Boardwalk now open

The rethemed and rebuilt Games of the Boardwalk opened yesterday in Paradise Pier at DCA. They look much better than the original versions that were in cheap and modern stucco buildings and were not themed to Disney at all.

The new games are in period Victorian buildings and are all themed to Disney cartoons. Dumbo, Goofy, Casey at the Bat, and of course Woody and Jessie are represented in the games. I haven't played them yet, but I walked by and checked them out, and I think the Fire Ladder Dumbo game is my favorite for some reason.

Here's a two minute video by MintCrocodile that sums up the new look and feel of the boardwalk games. The lush appearance of these new games only can mean good things as the Paradise Pier makeover continues this year and into 2010! :sohappy:

Thanks for the information! :)

You're welcome.

And yes Nicole, it is a huge improvement.

It's hard to see it in the short video, but the new facades and architecture, as well as the game interiors of the spaces, really makes the boardwalk area look far more fun and homey compared to the cheaper 2001 originals. Darkbeer has lots of pictures (of course) at his excellent picture site.. http://darkbeer.smugmug.com/gallery/7837899_jTkCK#507837608_xe8oZ

When the Fun Wheel opens in May, and when they give the adjacent Stores of the Boardwalk a similar design treatment late in '09/early '10, the Pier will look dramatically better.

DCA is definitely earning it's Disney stripes this year.

Nice shots. This kind of stuff really has me excited for when the whole park is done. If this level of care and detail goes into the whole park it will be a much more impressive place.

This is a little harsh its looks like DCA will be much better than it was.

DCA has nowhere to go but up. It has never been much more than a glorified amusement park. Updating their midway area does nothing to raise the standards of this park to Disney-caliber. All that does is just reaffirms DCA as an amusement park and nothing more. Hardly "stellar".

i'm curious - have you ever been to DCA? or are you basing your opinions on pictures you've seen online...?

also, there is such a thing as a personal opinion. if someone considers the changes as being stellar, can't you just accept it as opinion?

I thought DCA was a terrible Disney park until I actually went there. I actually enjoyed the Paradise Pier, Condor Flats and GRR area. What they are improving is just what it needs. The one thing that my whole group that I went with agreed on was that if they could add Rockn Roller Coaster to the hollywood area it would make that a destination point with TOT and that. JMO

I like the idea of Disney going back to basics and remembering their roots. The intricate and immersive themes are great. I love them, but sometimes less is more. Besides, didn't Walt want to put an "Amusement park" in his EPCOT?

I really don't think DCA needs another launched coaster. Aside from the themeing, California Screamin' is FAR superior to RnRC (at least in my opinion). They need something big in the Hollywood Area no doubt. Too bad they won't get rid of Mike & Sulley to the Rescue and replace it with Ride and Go Seek.
DCA is a nice park, but it isn't in the same league as Disneyland Park, or Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom (at least in terms of design and themeing) or Epcot. Its about on par with Hollywood Studios in Florida, though there are more things to do at DCA. Despite what some think, I'm fairly hopeful that after all the work is done in 2011 or whatever that the park will finally be worthy of the Disney name in terms of themeing.

I live in California and yes, I have been to DCA multiple times. I've given it lots of chances and have visited with an open mind. Believe me, nothing would thrill me more than to be able to say this is a great park, but I'm not going to pretend it's something it's not just because I wish it was. Anyone who would get this excited over a midway clearly doesn't understand what Disney parks are supposed to be about. You might as well go to Six Flags.

Quick question which has probaly been talked about... sorry... but when is the majority of the DCA make-over suppose to be done? When is the water going back in the lake?

Also, I visited DL for the first time in a long time last summer and I had heard so many negative things about DCA but I was impressed. Maybe all the negativity I read about it made me come in with very very low expectations so the fact that is was somewhat good made it amazing... but I think it's impressive. While the "cheesy carnival" theme was tacky... it was exactly the look they were going for I think, a cheap seaside pier carnival game location... but they were a bit nicer looking because it is Disney. I also was very impressed by the Grizzly Peak area and the Hollywood area (I love the Animation interactive tour... very cool). I do wish the Monster's Inc ride was a bit more... anything... it was cute but it could've been so much better. So for all the ragging on it I think it still is impressive... but I think it's looking a lot prettier and the changes are now more suited to the customer's taste. Who's to say what is and isn't Disney? If it still looks new (Walt always wanted the park to look like the first day it opened) and is an immersive experience... isn't that Disney?
