Came across the following letter today, in the form of an ad. It pretty much speaks for itself.

It's HarmonioUS, NOT HarmoniYOU.
Dear hotels,

TS, suck it up.

If you dont need to travel for biz (hi, ever heard of fax, video confrencing, or omg this wacky thing called e-mail and/or fedex??).. or if travel is no longer in the budget no matter how you spin it.. then people cannot TRAVEL anyway. Period. End of story.

I've personally encountered several companies that have cut back and cancelled big meetings and such. Its the reality of this economy.

So stop boo-hooing, and looking to lay blame. Suck it up and deal with this recession like the rest of us.

It's been SO crowded as of late, though I suppose I do need to come by and check out how the line moves for the next few weeks...

While they put up the stop sign with one hand the other hand is drooling in anticipation of the federal funds headed their way...

The letter is propaganda, plain and simple.

It is just like the bank CEO's and VP's telling us now how to "properly" handle the economic situation - that they helped create...

What the heck is "recognition travel"??? Is that where bailed out companies like AIG and such still send their executives and salesmen on lavish trips to resort hotels after they take my hard earned tax dollars?

If it is, Disney should be ashamed of being associated with such slimy and trashy behavior as that. If my tax dollars are going towards bailed out companies sending their employees to Walt Disney World for "recognition travel", then I would be furious. And Congress and the impacted companies have every right in the world to back away from slimy behavior like that.

"Recognition travel" indeed! Disney shouldn't be associating itself with that type of distasteful behavior.

It appears that the letter is saying that the current tone and rhetoric from Congress is starting to affect normal business travel.

Also, it is one thing for business to reduce cost by limiting travel, but it is another when purposeful travel is being axed because of fear of reprisals from the government looking to make an example.

The key statement is that large groups not directly affected by the bail out funds are cancelling trips because of reprisals from the government. That is not good.

Instead of looking for the bad or the extreme in the letter, perhaps it should be read for what it is: a concern that the current political climate is having unintented consquences on normal business operations.

you completely missed the point...Gov't has no business regulating or "reprimanding" or having an opinion about business travel. Or leisure travel for that matter either...a couple weeks ago Obama made a comment saying "now is not the time to be taking that trip to Vegas..."

Should I also feel guilty for taking a trip so SoCal at the end of this year to spend a week frivoluosly spending money at Disneyland? nope...it's my money, my business.

Sometimes in-person business meetings are much more effective than video conferencing...and they are ALWAYS more effective than Email.

:king:

When a company accepts federal money to "bail" them out then the Government has every right and just reason to find out why the heck they lost 2.5 billion dollars yet gave their CEO a 20 million dollar bonus. Or why they bought a new 25 million dollar jet like Bank of America, or why DANA spent 2.5 million to transport an exec. from Ohio to California while they cut their employees life insurance benefits...

The economy has changed in the past year and they way businesses operate need to adapt to the changing times if they wish to survive - this includes travel expenses. Sorry, but even after we recover things will never be the same as they were prior to this situation - whether that is for the better or worse though remains to be seen. Personally, I think it will be for the better, time will tell.

That has nothing to do with this letter though. It has to do with concerns that the current government rhetoric will and has hampered their industry by potentially impacting company's that did not take bail out money.

There is nothing in the letter supporting non-work related travel for companies that received bail out money.
