Doors on trams!

Hi,

I am new to these forums (have been reading them for 2 years, but never posted!) I don't know if this has been posted before/elsewhere but I was on the backstage magic tour and whilst visiting the workshops at the top of WDW property we saw a parking lot tram with prototype doors on it and when we asked our tour guide about them she said that they were sick of asking us to stay in the trams so they will be introducing the new doors in the future, possibly 1-2 years after more development.
Thought it was interesting and I would share it with you guys.

Welcome to WDWMAGIC and thanks for the report. The doors have been mentioned a few times over the years, but its good to finally have a first hand report of actually seeing them.

How did you like the backstage magic tour?

Wait a minute...It may just be a severe case of Deju vu, but I remember a post exactly like this like a year ago (New here, backstage magic, tram doors, few years down the line) and I remember it turning into a big argument and being closed.

It may just be Deju Vu.My brain hurts.
>_<

I loved the tour thanks, well worth the money - especially because you go 'backstage' at EPCOT, Hollywood studios, Magic Kingdom, Laundry building and the workshops.
Unfortunately I could not take any photos as it was backstage and strictly forbidden!

You were not entirely mistaken. The argument was started by "He that shall not be named" and it had nothing to do with the doors.

What are the odds that the DHS trams for the backstage tour, which already have doors, will be converted and used in the parking lot once the attraction is permanently shut down?

Possible but I doubt it as some stops require exiting from both sides of the tram and if I remember correctly the Backlot trams only have doors on the passenger side.

I thought about the tour trams (or chasis) too, but they take an age to close. I`d think whatever new type of doors they add have to be fast-acting as well as safe.

WOW they are still testing those? They said they had been testing them for a while when I saw them on the tour at the beginning of the year. Not a huge fan of them :(

The dumb thing is though that trams with doors are going to require more time, more energy and more cast members than the current trams. The thing about these doors is that while they can open automatically (ie, with a button), they must be manually closed. If they are parking 3 lots that day, the doors must all be opened and then manually shut at each of the three parking lots (turning what would have taken a few seconds in the already-parked lots to minutes, slowing everything down).

Oooo sounds like the old Mark IV monorails! They just have to make them sound like that old "cerlak" sound and I'll be happy with them. :animwink:

The tram prototypes with doors have been on the books for years, I think as far back as 2004 I can remember seeing one in that workshop.

Whether we actually ever see them being used though, maybe in a few years.

Having tram doors would definitely slow things down...Once your on, waiting for them to close the doors then waiting for them to open once the tram stops....It's fine the way it is!!
