why can't we critique disney on this site?

twice i have tried to critique disney on their drinking policy especially in epcot and have gotten numerous insulting responses both on the site and in private messages

i am a disney fan, not a disney fanatic, and it would appear that a great number of people here are fantatics

has anyone else had bad experiences with other members here when they try to critique disney? or have they all left this site for good in search of other more friendly open minded sites?

Yeah, if you try to make any constructive criticism regarding Disney on this message board you are bound to have at least 50 Disney zealots jumping down your throat. Try not to let them bother you.

Any time there is a place to voice opinions, people will disagree. Constructive criticism to Disney isn't generally taken to bad, but if you want to bash disney, why bother coming to the site? It's like going to a football game and telling everyone there that you don't like football. What's the point.

Essentially, just as you are entitled to your own view, the disney "fanatics" as you call us are entitled to our own views too. Hence the beauty of the freedom of speech.

I, too, have noticed a level of cultlike fanaticism toward WDW by many posters here. It's almost like Disney is their God and they have a religious duty to stamp out any heretical doctrines (any opinions that go against the beliefs of their personal Disney religion).

I think this guy is a good description of the type of people you're talking about.

I agree with this, but the OP did mention that he/she received "insulting responses both on the site and in private messages." I know it goes along with the whole freedom of speech thing, which you mentioned (as long as it's not harrassment, etc.), but it's sad that some people can't handle themselves in a mature manner on here and want to resort to selfish ways. :o

It is a forum about WDW, what would you expect, a discussion and/or debate about the rules of cricket???? And yes there are those here dedicated to stamping out heretical doctrines (heretical with a small h).

The OP violated the #1 doctrine though,

NO WHINING  ALLOWED ON DISNEY MESSAGE BOARDS!!!!!

This is not directed to you but if you notice the only time you see some members post here is when they have a complaint against Disney or the people who go there. Some members even say that they have lurked here for years but only find it nessasary to join and become a member when they have a complaint.

If you want to be able to come here and voice your opinions, you invite others to post theirs. Theirs may not agree with yours and invite discussion. These are discussion forums, after all.

It's not meant as a put-down, but just have thicker skin, I guess. One shouldn't type things online that they would not say out-loud in my opinion. That is simply good manners.

Oh, I haven't even read the thread the OP was talking about. I was just taking him/her at his/her word. Either way, I have seen behavior like that too often on these message boards. :(

No doubt about it. There are people who only post here out of some personal spite. Not saying that about the OP of this thread, but they usually show up as new posters. The moderators have gotten very good at weeding out the people who are not here to have a discussion but who would rather just cause trouble. Kudos to the mods of this forum!

It all depends on how you do it. You have to remember that your audience is full of people who hold Disney near and dear to their heart. When you critique something sacred to so many people you should try and be as non-confrontational as possible if you do not want to get attacked. I was reading your post about the Tequila bar and I must say, using phrases like "you know I am right," and "put the liquor down" is bound to get some negative responses back. If you critique, try offering your opinion instead of what you think you know is right. Remember that we are all humans and we tend to fly off the handle when someone attacks something we enjoy so much. Finally, critique away, I personally will not care, until you critique something I like.:D

i might be in the minority but i truly think there should be less alcohol in the parks, not more

have had way too many bad experiences with drunks late at night while watching the epcot fireworks, vacation time and disney in general stress people out way too much which they try to alleviate with drinking, and some (not all) drink way too much and lose control of their actions

we've all seen it and experienced it too many times in disney, don't deny it

the grandfather on the bus going back with the grand kids so drunk he keeps passing out during the ride, kids embarassed beyond words

it gets dark in epcot prior and during the fireworks, have had drunks spill drinks on kids in strollers while stumbling around

even had one spill and entire beer on my boyfriend in his wheelchair once, we were parked watching the fireworks and along he comes tripping on his own feet and walked directly into the parked wheelchair - even had the nerve to start a fight with us for running into him and wasting his drink

Walt wanted a family friendly park where children and adults who are kids at heart could enjoy a special time together, I do not think that when he planned the original parks in the 50s he could possible forsee the excessive alcohol abuse that goes on in today's overstressed world

I do not think he would approve, and in your heart, you know I am right.

Put down the liquor and remember, kids are watching your actions. Yours, mine, and thousands of others. Start making a good impression instead of a drunken one.

Here's the "criticism". Marinoalulema wasn't criticizing Disney, he/she was criticizing anyone who drinks alcohol. I'd be fine if you criticized Disney, heck, I do it all the time. Your post was condescending to a very large group of people, so I'm suspecting that's why you got some less-than-nice PMs. Me? I let it slide and didn't send you one because I understand that, on the internet, sometimes people say stupid things.
