Blu-ray/HD-DVD War Over?

It seems like HD-DVD has been dealt a crushing blow.

Warner goes Blu-ray exclusive.

The last undecided studio has joined Blu-ray. With the majority of the studios (Sony, Disney, Fox, Warner) on Blu-ray's side, there doesn't seem like there's much HD-DVD can do anymore. Over the net the last day, the overall sentiment coming from both sides' supporters seems like it's over. What do you think?

As soon as I saw that, I was like well... looks like I'll be going Blu-ray. It's pretty much done with.

At the same time, it's kind of unusual that HD-DVD didn't catch on because of it's familiarity.

Word is Apple is also planning to include Blu-ray players in Macs.

I expect sales of PS3s to also get a boost from this.

Sony and especially Disney pushed really hard to sell Blu-ray. And I think the PS3 also helped them. I have a PS3 and I didn't really care about the Blu-ray player when I bought it. But when I buy movies now and there's a Blu-ray version of it, I go "Well, I have a Blu-ray player, why not buy the Blu-ray?" I think a lot of people who have PS3s think like that.

Yeah, I don't have a next-gen player yet. Now, when I purchase one, I will definitely be going with Blu-ray. Of course, if Apple does debut something at MacWorld with a built-to-order option of a Blu-ray drive that writes and allows movie watching, I will probably have one as soon as they are available.

I feel like I'm wasting my money when I buy DVD's. They have gotten so cheap. Zoolander was like $3 at Best Buy last week. I just feel like I am investing in something that's on its way out. I like the low prices, but I'm starting to feel like I would feel buying a VHS tape nowadays. It feels good now that there's a solid difference between the support of the two platforms. I know which way I'm going, because at first, I was even considering buying into the dual-platform player from LG.

EDIT: Okay, so I definitely did not realize how large of a blow this is to the HD-DVD platform. Warner holds the largest market share for packaged media and they no longer support HD-DVD. That completely sucks for HD-DVD. Title tells all: HD-DVD Event cancelled due to Warner Announcement.

I'm in the Blu-Ray camp by virtue of having bought a PS-3 for DS12. But I was surprised to receive a Disney mailer touting DisneyMovieClub.ca [there is a U.S. club as well] which sells DVDs exclusively!

I e-mailed to ask if they intend to offer Blu-Ray, but haven't heard back as yet. It seems odd to me that they're not pushing Blu-Ray this way. Perhaps they haven't released enough titles in the format yet.

I also have a PS3 and I didn't really think much about the Blu-Ray player aspect of it at first. Now we have a few titles (At World's End, Rise of Silver Surfer, and Harry Potter 5) and I really enjoy it! One thing I'd love to get on Blu-Ray is the Planet Earth series...that would look amazing even on a non-HD TV.

HD TV is our next step :D

Fingers are crossed. I didn't buy the PS3 just for Blu Ray, but it sure looks like an even better purchase now. Come on over Universal and Paramount and this thing will be over.

Here's a good pie chart of who's with who.

If Blu-ray is so great, why were the disks at my Best Buy 'ghosting' so much when characters and things were moving?

Kind of a turn-off if you ask me. [/drift]

"Ghosting" generally has more to do with your TV especially if you are using an LCD TV with a high response time.

Even though I wound up somewhat on the losing end of this format war I am glad that this war will soon be over. Unless of course Toshiba and Microsoft stroke Fox a huge check and get then to switch to HD-DVD. This is highly unlikely but it is the last hope that the HD-DVD camp has to cling to.

I truly hate to be so crude, but some guy friends of mine (from church no less!) were talking about how the p*rn industry is planning on backing HD-DVD. As much as I hate to admit it, they do carry a great portion of video business...

Either way, I just can't wait for a "decision" to be made one way or the other. DH and I bought a 1080p LCD TV last year and have yet to see it at its full potential!

Well the biggest difference between now and the VHS-Beta Max battle is the internet. Some of those companies have went Blu Ray recently, but I doubt (and actually hope) that that "industry" has nothing to do with who wins.

If Paramount have now also defected to Blu-Ray, there is no feasible way for HD-DVD to ever win the format war. I wonder how long it'll be before they cease selling the HD-DVDs?
