Getting in shape for Disney?

Is anyone else out there trying to get into shape for your Disney trip? I am trying to loose 5 - 10 pounds and it's killing me. I started walking three miles a day last week now that school is back in here. I lost two pounds then I got stressed out over the weekend and I found them again.

What do you do to get ready for Disney? With all of the walking that we do there I thought this would be a great way to get prepared.:)

The only way to lose weight efficiently (safely, and making sure you won't just gain it back right away) is to concentrate on 3 factors: 1) The right nutrition, 2) moderate aerobic exercise (walking is good), 3) and a concern for muscle.

You're on the right track with the walking. That will aid in burning calories and will also prepare you for all of your walking at WDW.

For your diet, make sure to avoid fried foods, cream, butter, etc. Foods like that are literally pure fat and will basically cancel out all the walking you are doing. Also avoid simple carbohydrates as much as possible (white rice, sugar, white bread, etc.) If you eat whole wheat breads, pastas, and brown rice, those foods will actually aid in increasing your metabolism because they are complex carbs which are difficult for your body to break down. Also make sure to eat plenty of fibrous vegetables and lean proteins (white meat chicken, lean beef, fish, etc). As long as you eat the right foods in balance, your body will actually burn calories when it breaks down your meals, and in turn speed up your metabolism. It's more important to eat the right foods than it is to count calories.

Your weight loss will speed up if you do some light weight training or bodyweight exercises (like sit ups, push ups, or leg lifts) before you go out walking. You'd be surprised at how quickly you will get stronger and build some lean muscle. Lean muscle is essential, because all of the fat burning in the body takes place in the muscles. The more muscle a person has, the higher their fat burning capacity will be. If you do some moderate weight training right before you walk, you will increase your capacity of burning fat as you walk.

Hope that makes sense, lol. Sorry for writing you a novel. I think I basically regurgitated a few chapters of my personal training manual. Good luck!

Thanks! Now that the kids are back in school I can get on with it. My goal is to be at 120 in three weeks. That is my normal weight. I try to stay there as much as I can. This summer I gained because I just didn't watch what I was eating. I am feeling so much better from just walking and having a plan. I have still got to watch the carbs. It's hard to quit but I did it today. No more sugar until I get a Dole Whip At Disney!:slurp: It will be worth it!:D

Dole Whips are my passion! I always shake my head with shame whenever I see someone walk away from the Dole whip counter with a chocolate cone instead of the pineapple.

I just lost 35 pounds, have a long way to go but I'm feeling good! I will be off my diet when I go but I will be moderate in what I choose. Last time I went to Disney for 2 weeks I lost two pounds! Anyway, I'm trying to exercise but I want to walk also. Just can't get my motivation up to do so!

Also to another thing to add to the nutrition side of your weight loss is to eat frequently. 5-6 small meals a day will do quite a bit to increase your metabolism and get your body out of that "store everything as fat" mode. It sounds strange but you can actually starve yourself fat.

I have 75 days before our next trip....so, far I've lost 21 lbs....but would like to lose another 15 or so before we leave for WDW.

Primetime52 is right. The best way to speed up your metabolism and kick-start weight loss, is to do some resistance, or weight training before your cardio workout.
Lifting weights first, helps to deplete the sugars your body is storing for energy. Then, when you go to walk/run, instead of your body burning the glycogen(sugar) for energy it has to burn fat instead.:sohappy:

Good luck to everyone trying!

Thanksk for the tips on how weight training relates to a cardio workout . I never knew the connection, but I knew both were necessary.

I do a lot of walking to build stamina and make sure the footwear is well broken in. Proper stretching/warm-up exercises are also important. I kind of see my pre-vacation exercise as warm-up to all the walking at WDW!

I don't like to elminiate sugars or other enjoyable foods entirely - deprivation only sets me up for failure. Instead, I plan them into a well-organized week, and make sure i'm careful on portion control. (For instance, yesterday was perfect eating and a lot of walking in NYC, so I had a cupcake for dessert in the evening.)

For long term weight-loss, losing too fast can also work against you. I know I won't be my desired weight by our fall trip, but I'll at least feel better and be more comfortable in somewhat smaller-sized clothes.

My big challenge is how to not let WDW be such a trigger that it takes me for ever to get back on plan when I get home. (Especially since the Mickey rice crispy treats, chocolate pretzels, and caramel apples are such highlight of our trips.)

I start my new program at Curves today! My goal is more health-related vs. appearance-related. I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to look good for vacation, though. LOL! My goal is 20 lbs. and/or 2-3 clothing sizes. I want to feel more energetic, less tired all the time, and have better sleep habits (I've fought insomnia as long as I can remember). I mostly don't want to end up like my mother this summer: 50 years old with a double bypass. I want to live and be healthy and feel good.

Good luck to everyone! Here's to feeling good and looking our bestest for the mouse!

On an average day at WDW, we walk 5 - 7 miles. At work I walk about 3.5 miles on an average day. So if you can keep on your feet for most of the day you should be in great shape for your trip.

Walking and weight training can be benificial for getting in shape for Disney, but more importantly life in general. If youre on a diet stay on it even when at Diseny. A great way to accomplish this is by dining in a restuarant rather than at a one of the fast food type stands. This way you have more control over what you eat and have a healthier option even if its a few dollars more. if you are staying for a week treat yourself but only pick out 2 days to do so. Not only will it aid in keeping those pounds from coming back but it will make those 2 days you have a special treat (would be McDonalds fries from the VIllage Fry at MK for sure) really feel like a special goodie. good luck

It's funny, we were on the dining plan last Oct and I was so afraid that I would gain wait while I was there. I could not believe it when I didn't gain 1 pound. Walking is so good for you and thats why I have started doing this again. I have lost another pound so I am happy and feeling so much better from walking & watching what I eat. :)

ps. I am walking fast and I am using the ipod to keep the pace up high. I have found that the ipod has really helped pass the time and it also keeps me walking fast. Now "walk it out" lol My teenage daughter has some funky music on that thing!
