I was talking with my friend who is a former WDW CM, and WDW comes up in our conversations. I was a little suprised to hear that Disney World operates on a defisite. Meaning that the Walt Disney Company doesn't make a profit from Disney World. And after hearing that they spend $52,000 a day for each their fireworks shows alone, it seemed to make more sense. Just thought I share that with you.

No profit?
I dont work for Disney and havent looked at the books but WDW does make a profit for the TWD. How much I dont know but WDW is a profitable venture for Disney.
Not from theme parks. Or not as much as you might think. Most of their money comes from their film and tv ventures. Think about it, how much money do Disney theme parks make a day? In the millions maybe 100 of millions no doubt, but then think about how much money they have to spend to keep the parks running. All the electricity they use, water, paying cast members, fireworks ($52,000 a day per show), and so on. After adding all those together is it really that hard to believe?

The department your CM friend worked in may have not directly made a profit for the parks (i.e. park maintenance), but I dont think that the shareholders would be very happy if a very large portion of TDC was losing money regularly.

I never said he was right, I'm just stating what he said. And I would trust him more so then I would people on these boards, see that he did work their for over 5 years. For the record, he work attractions.

I have annual reports that state that theme parks turn a profit. I'll check and post later how much they acutally do.

Maybe hes talking about Disneyland Paris? As far as WDW,yes it does make a profit.It does spend a great deal of money on running the park but in return makes a great deal as well. A venture doesnt go 30 plus years in the "RED".Not only am I sure WDW makes a profit every year but he can do a basic google search for WDW profits and will see WDW contributes not only profit but a big profit to TWDC.

Um, ok. I didnt say he was wrong either. And yes, attractions would run at a deficite seeing that it actually brings in no money like dining, weddings, golf, etc. Its all about bookkeeping.
Oh, and if your friend told you the world was flat, would you believe him?

WDW is a very expensive place to operate. It does cost TWDC millions of dollars each day.
Firework costs are much higher than your estimate. It is not possible to spend only $52,000 a night on pyrotechnics. Especially since Wishes employs so many specially designed devices. Electricity Costs a lot, but disney does produce electricity on property, although they are not self-sufficient. So does water. Although CM salaries are average for FL., paying 55,000 CMs is not easy.
If you add these up, TWDC does make some profit from the parks. It is not a great amount but it is a profit

The parks aren't a windfall of profit, but they do make a profit. They wouldn't still be here if they lost money every day. Universal just reported their profits of 28 million dollars for this past quarter even with their attendance way down. If they're able to bring in that kind of profit then Disney is making probably 3-4 times more than that.
I've seen the figures before, but I don't have them right now. Rest assured that the parks do make money, otherwise they wouldn't be able to keep improving and staying open. They may not be a major windfall but they are very profitable.

I work at the Great Movie Ride at D-MGM. Trust me, WDW profits every day. Tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, pay for all sorts of stuff every day from small snacks or huge portioned meals to pins to very expensive rooms at different resorts. Heck, Disney is even paid by the chains who have stores at DTDs Westside (Virgin, HoB, AMC Theaters, etc.).

So I am going to add my two cents in on this.
A Walt Disney World Park Ticket costs: $59.00 a day
The Magic Kingdom has a capacity of around 75,000 people, Epcot can hold somewhere around 100,000 people, Studios is around 40,000 people or so, Animal Kingdom is about 50,000 people. Please correct me on these numbers if I am off. So using these numbers we can get ideas for at total Capacity days which can and have and do happen.
$59 park tickets x 265,000 people = $15,635,000.00 at the gate cash collected on Capacity Days.
So $52,000.00 on fireworks is very small in terms of gate cash collected.
But what do I know, Attraction CM's are as or more informed of daily operations and park updates, monorail expansions, new resorts, etc.. as the bus drivers are. :lol:

That was from 2005. The revenue for 2006 was 9.925 Billion, segment operating income for the year ended 9/30/06 was 1.534 Billion. That figures to be something around 27 million per day.

Okay I just had a friend tell me that Target is "a bigger company than Disney" I told her she was on crack. She works for Target and swears that they are a more profitable companay than Disney. I still say she is wrong. What do you all think? Disney vs Target vs Walmart? Can they even be compared?
