There have been a lot of threads from people claiming that EPCOT Center (1982 to the late 90's) was the "educational" park, and that it's original intent was to "learn" something.

Alright folks. Time to put your money where your mouth is.

What did YOU learn at EPCOT?

How did this theme park widen your knowledge of the world?

What did EPCOT personally inspire you to do with your life?

(Don't include information you learned somewhere else... like school !)

To those who claim that "the original intent" of EPCOT is dead, I want to see just how "educational" the park really was. Obviously, I feel this whole "educational" thing is rubbish, and that the original vision of EPCOT failed with the general public. Still, I'll start off this thread with a legitimate answer:

** EPCOT's "Living Seas" pavillion inspired me to take up SCUBA diving.

** I learned from EPCOT's "The Land" that plants can be grown without soil, hanging in the air.

Alright, that's about all I can come up with (which says alot about the "educational" park) Your turn!

I Learned about "The making of Me" I dont remeber how young I was, but I remember seeing that movie.

I also remember seeign the "number of people on earth" counter thing, and thinking it was interesting how they can guestimate that.

I learned that in just a few shoert mins. I can travel around the world and never even have to go back to the car.

I learned alot of things at EPCOT. In fact I remember one time it was a feild trip from school. Just EPCOT. not MK So I think if the Schools would do it, it must be educational. This was many years ago. like 6th grade or something (BTW I am now 17 so 6th grade was a long time ago.

BTW. What do you have aginst EPCOT??? I have seen many post by you knocking EPCOT. If you dont like it, then dont go.

I got to go to Epcot right before it opened. It was an awesome park at that time for learning.
Things were so much different in the world we live in at that time. You cannot ever understand that unless you lived it.
No one knew what computers could do, let alone what they were for. We did not have them at home and they were not a mainstream appliance at the time.

Epcot helped change that. They had blip (i think that was his name). A touch screen computer system in kiosk's and other areas for guests to use for information about the park. It also connected you to live cast members for help. It was awesome for that time period. state of the art....actually it surpassed it.... The library in my school still used light pens and green monitors.

With the internet now we can learn about anything in a blink of an eye....or a stroke of the keyboard. At that time no internet, no computers, only books, not even the discovery channel....barely had cable.
These rides takes about history, how things came about, things I did not know at the time ( I was 14).

Technology these days are not changing in the way it was at that time. We are now only getting better and faster but the same old thing, at that time brand new things no one ever have seen or heard about were happening and Epcot always showed them in there full glory. Robot arms drawing your face on a piece of paper, computers shown to us that ran Epcot, jsut all these cool inventions all happening so fast.

The world and its people have changed alot in the last twenty years. People want fun and things that make there mind imagine more then ever. Epcot has had a problem dealing with this. Children are much more smarter since they too have all information at there fingertips. Epcot needs to find a way to open a child's mind once again, plus make it entertaining for the adults. If anyone can do that, disney can and will find a way.

to answer another one fo yuor questions, it made me want to learn computers...After that visit my dad got a timex/sinclair computer. It was a very basic system and it taught me how to use it, and taught me some code.
My High School days hit me close to that time, so it was friends, parties, and a girls. After I was married I once again took up computers as a hobby in 91.
Now I do it for a living.

Actually I learned a lot at Epcot.

Learned about the histories of other countries.

I learned about agriculture from Living with the Land.

I learned about the history of communication in SSE.

Most importantly Epcot gave me my dream about becoming an Imagineer.

Lets see.......

At The Universe of Energy Pavillion I learned that Ellen Degeneres is dumber than a box of rocks.

At The Wonders of Life pavillion, I learned that nobody much cares about health related topics while they're on vacation.

At The Land Pavillion I learned that Kitchen utensils, fruits, vegetables, and food wrappers can sing, dance and Rap.

At The Imagination Pavillion I learned that skunks spray smell in Florida is a lot more tolerable than the Skunks Spray smell here in Illinois where I'm from.

At Test Track I learned that you can go from having a GOOD hair day to having a BAD hair day in just a matter of seconds.

At The Living Seas Pavillion I learned that Jellyfish are florescent purple and that Turtles that talk sound like surfer dudes. I also learned that Manatees are relatively the same size and shape as my Mother in Law.

At Ice Station Cool I learned that on really hot days, the floor gets really sticky.

At Spaceship Earth I learned that when Rome burned, it smelled a lot like my weber grill.

and last but not least...

At Mission Space I learned that if you get in the wrong line, there's a really good chance that you'll throw up at some point that day.

Wow...I had no idea that EPCOT was such an educational park!

Spaceship Earth taught me about the history of communication and since I now have the narration memorized, I use it a lot in school.

Horizons gave/gives me hope for the future.

I have seriously learned a lot about energy from the Universe of Energy, despite my dislike for Bill Nye.

I have learned alternative ways of growing plants that I have been able to share with members of my family who are interesting in farming and gardening.

The Making of Me was my earliest education on reproduction. I loved that show from the beginning (I was 3 when it opened). This is honestly how I sorted out reproduction in my head until I was old enough to become interested in actual scientific text.

I have learned about the history of our planet from The Living Seas.

I know that most of you on this thread are taking it as a joke. But Epcot and Disney World as a whole have been very educational for me. I've been visiting since I was 2 years old. Some of my earliest knowledge came from Disney.

And there's nothing wrong with that...

I've learned from EPCOT that people who are always complaining about everything need some education...

Universe of Energy had taught me something....but I forget :lookaroun And I swear it was something that is a source of energy. Oh well

By the time I paid attention on SSE, I already knew about most of the information presented. So nothing there.

Don't care for living with the land, so doh!

I learned how to use my imagination with all my senses? :lookaroun

I learned that France, Italy, and Norway have really strong-smelling stores.

I never took Epcot as an educational park. Yes it introduces you to different cultures and to me, that's probably the biggest education anyone can get at Epcot right now. You meet and greet all these different cultures (and cuisines for many of you) and you get a sense of where some people in our neighborhood come from. This is coming from someone in Miami where multicultural education is a big deal

So...yeah

On SSE, I learned that like a grand and miraculous spaceship, our planet has sailed through the universe of time. And for a brief moment, we have been among its many passengers. From the very beginning, we have always sought to reach out to one another....to bridge the gaps between us....to communicate. :lookaroun

And then there was AT&T

The thing about Epcot is that it has to be an educational park without the guests realizing that they're learning things. I think rides like SSE, all of World Showcase, Mission Space, and Test Track are good at this. Have something educational, and give it an extra sence of fun. Test Track IMO is a good example because it gives an idea about how cars are tested with an extra thrill. SSE does a good job because its been given so many dramatic elements to the extent where it doesn't feel like a lecture.

Innoventions used to be good at this, but since then has completely lost its focus and is now merely a Disney games test ground. And the new Imagination only makes people learn that little purple dragons can really pi$$ off Eric Idle. The old attraction used to show what good uses you could use your imagination for like writing stories, inventing things, creating theories, ect.

what didn't i learn at EPCOT is the better question. The cultures of different countries, WOL, UoE, everything CAN be educational in some way.
