Avatar (the movie) and its Sequels

I think it has zero chance of bombing and based on James Cameron‘s track record I don’t think he needs to hire anybody else. He’s doing just fine.
Ever since Titanic, his movies have needed an editor. His movies before where very tight and full of story. How many times did they run up and down a sinking ship? They even did it again in Avatar 2.

What would you have them do just stand there? Its a sinking ship where the main cast is trying to escape. Of course they are going to being running around the ship trying to get to safety.

You cut that and you lose all the tension of the escape.

I’m excited for ‘Fire & Ash’.

From what I am hearing from people who attended the World Premiere, this is the best chapter yet and blows the other two films out of the water ( no pun intended ).

Varang is the star character this time around….and Quarrich….and the interplay between those two.
Some surprising twists and turns story wise, and the visuals are absolutely breathtakingly stunning.

Cannot wait to see this in IMAX 3D!

I'll take "Things That Won't Happen" for $100 Alex....
I agree this one’s safe, it’ll be interesting to see how it holds up by movie 5 though, it sounds strange to say the second “only” made $2.3 billion but that’s a massive drop from the $2.9 billion the first movie made, it’ll be interesting to see if this one can break $2 billion, if it can’t this may be the first time (I can think of) that a non Hollywood movie topped the box office charts. I won’t be surprised if it ends up closer to $1.5 billion than $2 billion, still a phenomenal success, just goes to show what an anomaly the first was.

So IMAX 3D or Dolby 3D? For Way of Water I ended up seeing it in the exact theatre that Cameron watched it before it was released nationwide. And that was in Dolby 3D.

Nah, Titanic is a perfectly paced film.

Avatar: The Way of Water does feel long, but it may have needed a script rewrite to be shorter. A lot of the scenes that FEEL like filler end up paying off or setting up something important later on so there isn't too much that could be removed from the existing footage, but the pace is way too leisurely in the middle hour. Some of the subplots could have been reigned in or condensed with a another draft.

I have no doubt none will get the same or exceed the first, but a ~20% drop between the first and second doesn't really seem like a lot to me when you're talking about a sequel. Had it dropped more like a normal sequel it would be closer to 30-40%, especially for a $Billion movie.

Anyways, I don't know how much this one will do.

On your other point, in 2020 Demon Slayer had topped the box office. I would also put an asterisk on Ne Zha 2, as its entire box office came almost entirely from China. Not to take anything away from it but there is very little 3rd party verification of box office that comes out of the Middle Kingdom, so its unknown if that is 100% accurate.

It comes down to preference. IMAX 3D (bigger screen) vs 1.85 Dolby 3D (sharper image). It's more complicated than that but it can get very nerdy. Go with the showing that has the best seats available in the format you prefer between the two.

What a feat…. Avatar has a Golden Globe nomination for box office achievement despite not being released to the box office yet…🤪
That entire category made no sense:

Avatar was nominated for box office achievement ... despite not even being released yet!
Kpop Demon Hunters was nominated ... despite being a predominantly streaming movie and released by a company (Netflix) that seems determined to eradicate movie theaters at any cost necessary
Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning and Wicked: For Good, both of which underperformed to expectations, were nominated! The Final Reckoning was not even able to make back its absurd $400 million budget.

Sinners and Weapons were genuine box office hits for their respective genres, but they still made significantly less money than several other blockbusters of the year.

It's just a dumb award that needs to go away or be retitled. I think it's meant to be more of a "cultural impact" award, but that's not how it's currently described.

Also, where is Ne Zha 2 (supposedly grossed $2 billion this year) or Superman (which outgrossed all Marvel movies this year)?

Cinematic and Box Office Achievement

The Cinematic and Box Office Achievement includes nominees from the year’s most acclaimed, highest-earning and/or most viewed films that have garnered extensive global audience support and attained cinematic excellence.

Eligibility:

● Motion pictures are eligible for the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award if they achieve a box office receipt total/gross of $150 million, of which $100 million must come from the U.S. domestic box office, and/or obtain commensurate digital streaming viewership recognized by trusted industry sources.

● Films that are released after November 22 may qualify based on projected box office performance and/or streaming views from recognized industry sources.

● Cinematic and Box Office Achievement contenders can also be considered for Best Motion Picture in their respective categories, i.e., Drama, Comedy or Musical, Animated or Non-English Language if they meet the eligibility requirements for each of those awards.

● Box office and streaming views will determine eligibility; once a film meets the box office-related qualifying criteria or streaming criteria, Golden Globes voters will determine the nominees and winner based on excellence.

● A total of 8 nominees will be named for this category.

The whole idea was this category was going to acknowledge blockbusters who wouldn't be normally nominated for other categories. As the industry was trying to acknowledge that the public was not understanding why a hugely popular movie wasn't being nominated but a movie no one saw was being nominated.

Avatar 3 was added because of projected box office. Ne Zha 2 didn't get added because it only made $23M in the US market. Superman, well I'm guessing that enough didn't think it performed well enough for a superhero movie to be deemed eligible.

Avatar is nominated based on the extremely safe prediction it will meet the award criteria.

To be eligible for the cinematic and box office achievement award, a movie only needs to make $150 million at the worldwide box office, including at least $100 million in North America, "and/or obtain commensurate digital streaming viewership." Therefore, "Fire and Ash" could theoretically gross more than $2 billion less than its predecessor and still qualify.

The cinematic achievement award is dumb… it did not work for the Oscars…. I don’t think it works for the Golden Globes….they have finally become less of a joke the last couples…. With less WTH moments..,. But apparently still need one ridiculous award category

And I think it looks like crap most of the time, and causes some people to become nauseous. Hopefully neither will happen here.

Really he needs to stop with the gimmick “format” stuff and just produce good movies.
YouTuber and movie pundit Robert Meyer Burnett has seen Avatar and said the High Frame Rate looks fantastic…. He says he believes the difference is the use of the format is not on anything real…of course we will find out in the next week or so

Hopefully it does look good, but that still likely won’t prevent some from getting nauseous. As the high frame rate is jarring for many people’s eyes.

I remember seeing one of the Hobbit movies in 48fps and I thought it was pretty bad. I did not feel that way about Way of Water. It wasn't perfect, but I thought overall it worked pretty well. I saw it in IMAX 3D and in HFR 3D and thought it was good in both.

I remember reading Roger Ebert's comments about 48fps cameras many years ago and how impressive and clear the images and movement were. I think Cameron has done well with it so far so I believe it does look good.
