Being considerably older than yourself when I was young it was a whole lot different. I had a situation when I was around 10 years old where I had to get a shot of something (they never told me what) every week for about two months. Seemed like years! Needles back then were sterilized and reused. Overtime they got ever so dull so if you were at the end of it's life it was quite the experience. One even broke during the injection (don't panic it was easily removed and that is no longer a problem anyway). I have to admit that I still flinch when getting one but they are so sharp and quick now that 99% of the time I don't even feel it at all and when I do it is so minor that it almost makes me laugh.I really hate the whole process of getting a shot. Really I hate needles.
The one that hurt the most when I was 7 years old (1955) was the polio vaccine when it first came out. Again, mostly because of usage and demand was a little painful, but it saved the rest of my generation from a lengthy time in an Iron Lung or, worse yet, death. That was quite the sight to see. Lines formed at Fire Stations and other places to get the vaccine. No conspiracy theories, just people that were less educated, but sometimes much smarter than today's population.
