Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

You know…i had never considered that they maybe sunk half the franchise with totally messing with the character at its core…
Someday let Burbank know!!! 🤐
Maybe one of greatest mistakes in cinematic history? Disney still hasn’t recovered from the direction they took with Luke. Last Jedi came out in want 2018? My husband lost interest. Star Wars isn’t even a thing in our house anymore. My kids don’t care but I have girls. They did like baby yoda years ago.

I think the break even is under $500 million. The WSJ said the budget was $225 million. If you double it for marketing expenses,
WSJ Article
I believe @FrontierSpirit was closer

The break even should be 2 and 1/2 times its budget….that is with adding marketing which is usually roughly half the production…although I would guess the marketing spend is more here…, Superman is being pushed everywhere…. Plus the theaters keep roughly half the gross

That only applies to non-Disney movies in this board. ;)

Ahhh… not really… people want to say movies are 3.x the budget for Disney…. Brave New World had a 180 budget… many said it’s break even was 420… but the all Disney movies fail crowd said it needed more… granted those figures usually come from one poster who does not even care for movies later then 70’s not named Barbie…. But some here want to quote those numbers to support their own biases

I'm going to hold on to that quote for when posters start telling me Disney movies actually made a profit because the ratio is not 2.5x and because of streaming, reasons and other voodoo.

2.5x has always been my standard for ALL movies regardless of who released it. Thanks for confirming it.

That is the standard, and used by pretty much everyone except TP and those that parrot him, which is what DK was referring to.

$550M-$565M is breakeven for Superman.

That’s my standard for profits theatrically…. There is more nuanced then that of course with backend deals such as VOD and licensing… but most of us don’t Know those figures… although we can see the results at the end of the year from Deadline…. Which are an insider trade outlet and are trustworthy

I believe that is why Gunn’s own comments about Superman not needing 700 million to be a considered a success. Is accurate
