Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

trying to remember the last time there was “controversy” about a major film like this that wasn’t a Disney film..

I guess it depends on what you mean controversy, and then by "major" film. Because there has been controversy surrounding lots of films over the last decade or two (not involving Disney), both "major" and smaller films. From behind the scenes drama to issues with what actors said or did in public, or even finally with what is on-screen.

You have examples from the last few years, like Sound of Freedom and its "pay-it-forward" ticket scheme that stirred up much controversy (and which that studio has yet to be able to replicate), not to mention the controversy surrounding the movies content itself. And then you have examples like Joker 2, which pulled the wool over audiences eyes by hiding the fact that it was a musical, which infuriated many. And then again you have Barbie, which also pulled the wool over audiences eyes by hiding the fact that it has a progressive message, which infuriated many because it was too late to cause it to bomb. And you even had Flash, and its controversies with Ezra Miller. And all of these were discussed here at the time.

So there are many more examples of controversies large and small that don't involve Disney. We just never really talk about them in this forum as much.

Maybe one of greatest mistakes in cinematic history? Disney still hasn’t recovered from the direction they took with Luke.

Both AMC locations are too busy for me to see Superman tonight. Only showings with ample seating are 10 and 11 PM. My husband has to get up early for work tomorrow and then we are going to WDW tomorrow night!

I’ll have to ask my husband but I guess fans get to enjoy or be upset at the films they watch. The price of admission gives you that right I suppose. Can’t get upset if someone likes or dislikes something but you can be curious as to why.

But people are wrong to doubt Hoppers.

That film will not fail, just because Elio failed, especially if people seem to responding to that film better than they did Elio in early test screenings to the point that they’ll see it in theaters.

What they need to do is just cut better trailers for original movies and find a way to make them appeal to people of all ages without hiding what it truly is.

Also, considering people seem to be more… attuned to animal movies, that’s why I think Hoppers and especially 2027’s Gatto will succeed where Elio failed.

The Luke stuff is exaggerated sure, but the ST was the most hyped film series EVER and we were mostly let down

2.5x has always been my standard for ALL movies regardless of who released it. Thanks for confirming it.

I think we all *mostly* agree with this. You are a believer of the metric system.

There are rare times I'll make an educated argument for a 3X multiple, but that's when the blockbuster is an unusually low budget relative to its marketing (Stitch/Illumination). At 225 this blockbuster is not one of those.

Hey it’s Zaslav, this is the same guy who shelved a completed (and good based on screen tests) movie in Batgirl for the tax write off, so I wouldn’t put anything past him.

The "controversy" is not impacting Superman's box office:

"Wait, weren’t some source expecting Superman to go hog wild after the $22M previews with a $140M-$150M opening? Is MAGA to blame? Is Gunn’s “immigrant” comments to blame? It’s my understanding, not at all, because the red county zones for this type of movie aren’t underperforming (more on this in the AM), rather they’re churning out the average amount of cash for a PG-13 family adventures movie. At $120M+, this is the ceiling for a standalone Superman movie when he’s not fighting Batman in the desolate remains of Gotham."

I think that's part of it. Even though nowadays Superman fights for Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow (instead of the American Way), I think many still view him as a symbol for America.

I also think DC has to rebuild its reputation after the collapse of the DCEU. So I would imagine it will take some time to rebuild faith in the DC brand.
