Elio (Pixar - June 2025)

We’ll see, I’m certainly not cheering against it. I felt way worse about Strange World going into it, but the company has a really bad history with animated sci fi.
I think a big problem for Disney, Pixar, and North American animation studios in general is that science fiction had been pretty well-covered by live-action filmmakers (and animators elsewhere, such as in France and most famously Japan) well before they got into the genre. Wall-E was the only film I can think of offhand that feels like something that hadn't already been done better in live-action. It's like how there have been few attempts at "high fantasy" animated features, as opposed to lower-stakes fairy tale-style fantasies, in the U.S. that did well; they couldn't keep pace with what live-action filmmakers had already accomplished. If anything I think a lot of sci-fi/high fantasy fans think animation is a step down, which isn't fair, but somewhat understandable. And Elio just reminds me so much of the kind of movies we got so many of via Amblin and Amblin-wannabes in the 1980s. What exactly is Pixar bringing to the table here to make it feel fresh? It's not a distinctive setting (like Lilo & Stitch had with Hawaii), or an unconventional protagonist(s) (like the senior citizens in Cocoon), so...

My spoiler-free review of Pixar’s Elio, after being invited to a press screening of it thanks to a film critic friend of mine:

#Elio’s a sentimental, strong return to classic Pixar akin to #Ratatouille, #WallE, #Up, and #ABugsLife.

My favorite Pixar film since #TurningRed, even if Pixar’s best might be either Coco, Wall-E, Ratatouille, The Incredibles, or A Bug’s Life.

Strong relatable message, strong 3D, Elio & Glordon’s chemistry is endearing, and it flowed well.

Way better than its trailers made it look and it’s worth seeing in theaters, either in RealD 3D or in Dolby Cinema.

8/10 or 4/5 stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

P.S. Stay all the way thru the credits, especially IF you’re wondering why we haven’t seen a teaser trailer for Pixar’s next film #Hoppers yet…

Also, if you head to see it at the movies, make sure you get a collectible of the Glorp cup from the Communiverse from the movie.

That’s good.

And in other news, we finally have official word on what the ACTUAL budget for Disney/Pixar’s #Elio is thanks to actual reliable trades.

According to Deadline, the film cost $150M to make, not $300M like that lying grifting snake Mr. Jordan Ruimy claimed on World of Reel, and I doubt we should be surprised given Ruimy lied about Captain America: Brave New World had a budget of $380M, when the ACTUAL budget, according to the trades, was $180 million.

Let this be a lesson to all you people who post clickbait and lies from grifters like Jordan Ruimy here on this social media platform again.

Never, and I mean, NEVER post anything like what Jordan Ruimy said here on this platform again unless it’s confirmed by reliable trades like The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, DEADLINE, or The Wrap.

That means you too, @TsWade2.

It’s high time platforms like this went back to a vetting process for when people share info over movies, film budgets, and the truth about them.

Not for a Pixar film. That’s Brave/Good Dinosaur territory.

What if there was a combative poster here who kept promising a hand-drawn Tiana release in 2029 and that Fantastic Four was guaranteed to be a billion dollar earner? Should the mods here gatekeep that person from posting?

I personally do not think so, but your statement seems to lean in that direction.

Except per Box Office Theory, the HIGH-END tracking of The Fantastic Four’s opening weekend suggest a billion is possible, IF the movie is good

I saw it today because daycare was closed for Juneteenth. It was a very cute movie, beautiful backdrops, moved fast, good message for kids, requisite Pixar tearjerker moments - no complaints. The Carl Sagan voiceover was a very nice touch.

I think with a different release date this would be a moderate hit. This summer I could see it getting lost in the crowd. I think young children will want to see it but older kids, teens and adults may be at Superman or HTTYD. Our theater was definitely the six and under crowd.

I'm not sure if you are looking at a different site or outdated data, but Box Office Theory has the high end domestic total right now at $395M -

As much as I want this movie to do well, I don't see how you are getting a potential $1B movie from that. As that would mean that international would have to pull in $605M just to clear $1B. And I don't see that happening, even if WoM is good. As no MCU movie outside of Spider-Man and Deadpool have gotten over ~$550M internationally post-Endgame.

I see a potential high end WW total at being between $750M-$850M. Which if that happens would be a good performance for the MCU, especially lately. Beyond that I'd just be happy if it does better than $550M WW.

Disney is pushing Fantastic 4 hard, and early

Meanwhile, Elio gets breadcrumbs

There's an inverse to how much manufactured hype a movie gets vs what's needed. Usually it's the obvious money makers like Stitch that get blanket coverage, while the movies that need to have awareness built get ignored.

I guess it makes sense. The last two Marvels have pretty badly underperformed the brand, so if Fantastic Four doesn’t do gangbusters they’ve got a big problem on their hands going forward with three turkeys in a row. They have to seal the deal with that one or else.

For original stories, awareness is a tricky needle to thread. Sorta requires a mix of rave reviews, the marketplace having a lack of similar product, and some other viral x factors.

Saw it tonight, it was really good. My comment before about it reminding me of Explorers from the 80s was pretty spot on.

There were no “bloopers” during the credits or at the end, at least at my showing. And as far as Hoppers, they had a little what I would call a “bumper” after all the credits, with a few second sequence that doesn’t even indicate what it’s for until they flash the “Hopper March 2026” title card and it goes black. So that is even less than they did recently with the teaser for Zootopia 2. So I don’t expect anything in relation to Hoppers until August with maybe Freakier Friday.

Also this is the first time in a very long time where only Disney movie previews played in-front of the movie. Don’t know if this was because it was a Thursday “preview” or what, but it was refreshing.
