There's a good reason why casting is done by professionals hired to, you know, cast actors, and not left up to plebes behind a keyboard.
I feel compelled to point out that, unlike some casting professionals currently working at Disney, I have never cost the company (or any company) over a hundred million dollars because of a poor casting decision. So maybe the professionals shouldn't be put on a pedestal.

I’ve never cost Disney (or any company) over a hundred million dollars because of a poor casting decision either!

I’m curious. Are there any others out there who can say the same?

You're Awesome!

I didn't know if I should put a 😍 or 🤣 emoji. I agree with you completely on this one. A lot of the geniuses of the past no longer work at Disney. They've been living off of their past greatness for years now. That's why they keep having to do remakes and sequels.

You just don't have the brilliant insight that led to genius casting decisions like Gal Gadot, who even the staunch Snow White defenders can't defend because she sucks.

Meanwhile, plebs on the Internet have been mocking her acting for years.

And theres a reason why that field is littered with the corpses of films they've killed when they drank too much of the kool-aid. (To be honest it was actually grape flavored Flavor Aid spiked with Cyanide they used at Jonestown). You wonder why certain actors are "blacklisted" ? That's because their baggage (social, political, lifestyle) outweighs their ability to attract average customers.

The thing that many don't realize when they are doing their "fan casting" is there are many factors to casting a film. Studios don't always have the ability to get anyone and everyone who "we" think they should cast. Actors schedules, actors pay demands, actors desire to work on other projects, actors contractual obligations with other studios, actors desires to only want to work with certain co-stars or directors, they were asked but turned it down, external issues preventing their casting, and more all prevent a studio from casting a particular actor in a role that "we" think they would be perfect for. Not to mention that sometimes they do an audition and it just doesn't meet the vision of the writer/director so they aren't cast in the role.

For an example brought up here, Jim Carrey was supposedly Disney's first choice for Genie before Will Smith was ever brought up, but Jim was busy at the time with a lawsuit and couldn't commit so had to turn it down.

So fan casting is fun, but there are many reasons why it doesn't happen the way "we" think it should.

And sometimes fan casting is just wrong.

Remember the unhappiness over Chris Evans’ Captain America casting, with him mostly known for the terrible Fantastic 4 and 90s teen movies?

Or the outrage from Holmes fans over the BBC casting Benedict Cumberbatch in Sherlock for being too young to play the famous literary detective?

I stand by the fan casting of Sebastian Stan for Luke Skywalker, though *chef’s kiss*

Everyone can't be a genius. There is going to be people who are wrong on both sides. Like with everything you have to go with the best person for the job.

When it comes to casting the most important things are looks and abilities. First and foremost they need to look like the character. You can't fully suspend your beliefs if in the back of your mind you're thinking "He doesn't look like that." Another thing you have to take into account is perception. If someone only plays sweet and hero roles you can't cast them as the main villain (McCarthy, Gadot).

I wouldn’t limit everyone that way. Some people have greater breadth of imagination. Others actually prefer something new and fresh instead of an exact copy.

Also I think you mean suspend disbelief.

People seem to have no problem suspending their beliefs.
