Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

It's not whataboutism. You specifically chimed in questioning the validity of a analogy. Then proceeded to give an example that's no where near the same situation as zegler and snow white. So if you're going to talk about a movie that had a bad 1st impression, that's fine. But the least you could do is make it semi comparable if you are going to dismiss others analogies.

I won't get to into the first part of your post as it will get political. I think you're off base on it. It wasn't a flub, it was how she feels. It's not one post like you say. She's made her feelings known very clearly.
Oh half the country probably feels that way. You need to get over it.

Alrighty, well lets talk about how much it's going to lose. Whats the over/under on it dropping more than 60% this weekend?

What's the over/under on it not cracking 100m domestic?

I'll take the over on both of these. A little more than a 60% drop weekend to weekend and grossing just over 100m domestic by the end of its run, if for no other reason than Disney will do its best to have it linger through the summer to try to hit that mark.

Except the analogy the poster made and that I was talking about was about the comments made at D23 not the posts in 2024 that you're wanting to focus on. So my examples were specific to the D23 comments, not the 2024 comment. So I'm not giving examples for your scenario as that isn't the focus of my conversation.

I didn't say it was a flub. I said it a rash heat of the moment dumb post. And I have no doubt that is how she felt at the moment, but that doesn't mean she hates people like you and others claim. Again one can dislike someone's decisions without hating them.

That's fairly ignorant to say. Why do I have to get over it? The ones who need to get over anything, are the ones that think she didn't alienate a huge part of the buying public and are making excuses for her. That's money this film desperately needed. And constantly trying to spin it. Quick question, wasn't the vote pretty close to 50/50?

And in other news Theater Owners are looking at ways to entice movie goers back to theaters.

All these suggestions would be a turn off for many though, so hopefully they keep thinking.

I was watching a box office video the other day that puts 90% the blame on streaming, and they made a very solid argument. 50 years ago theaters were terrified that TV would put them out of business but due to lack of content, commercials, and schedules it never happened, it wasn’t until everything became “on demand” that it’s actually happening.

My guess is a 50% drop, in part because it did such low numbers last week, I think it’ll pull in another $20-25 million this weekend.

I think it’ll eventually top $100 million domestic but not by much. It’s fortunate there’s not much competition right now.

Yes, 50/50 is two halves.

Look, this has to be faux outrage. There's no way I'm going to believe that normal adults care this much whether a twenty-something actor hates them or not. I just don't buy it.

And just for context, that 50/50 only represents less than 40% of the actual country. So whomever cares about this, as valid as their feelings might be, is only reflected in about 20ish% of the country, not the entire or even half the country.

I just dislike when people frame it as half the country being insulted when its really less than a quarter.

I mean, James Woods has said some pretty awful things about people on the left and never apologised for them. That’s not going to stop me from watching Hercules. 🤷‍♂️
But he's also a smooth talker. He could use his Hades persona and call me worthless trash to my face, and after the initital shock & anger subsided, I'd probably be like: "You know, the guy's got a point."

Well they sure as heck didn't disown the statements. So as I was told here, and many agreed with. If you don't condemn it you are endorsing it.
I think it’s agreed by most that they played a significant role in her apology. That was their way of defusing the situation, consistent with the company’s general aversion to involving itself in such controversies if they can avoid it. And before anyone mentions Carano, as she herself has acknowledged, Disney likewise offered her the opportunity to apologise. She exercised her right not to take it, and it’s only then that they fired her and issued a public statement about her posts.

All this talk about “first impressions” and we are once again pretending the first two years - TWO YEARS! - of reactions to this project never happened. Lots of people heard Zegler’s unearthed comments about the original film specifically because of a two-year-old rage campaign.

History doesn’t change because it’s inconvenient to your ideology.
Yep…that “rage campaign” took down an otherwise bad, compeletely forgettable movie that was as easy to guess as who this weeks scooby doo villian is

The network always wins

Poor Disney

Exactly this….the people upset choose their battles to prove everyone agrees with their narrative…. Every film they hate on is apparent it will not do well even without the controversies
Kids have changed too. I have a 4 year old granddaughter and a 5 year old grandson and they are both excited about the Minecraft movie. Not a word about Snow White even though they saw the ads.

Even if I did believe that Zegler was influential enough to control people's actions to the extent claimed, she insulted a bunch of people who were already on record as hating the film for other reasons. The prince doesn't save her stuff along with some nonsense too depressing to mention.

So the federal government is now directly targeting Disney through the FCC.

Seems like Iger’s cringing appeasement on multiple fronts didn’t work.

This will, of course, have a chilling effect on all future Disney productions.

But we should probably keep obsessing over a 23 year olds social media posts.
