What if Annette Funicello, in the 1960 lead up to her starring role in the release of 1961's Walt Disney's Babes in Toyland, was quoted in the Los Angeles Times saying;

"May Kennedy supporters and Kennedy voters and John F. Kennedy himself never know peace."

Walt Disney was a notable supporter of Richard Nixon in the 1960 Presidential campaign, but even after Annette was forced to "apologize" for her purposeful remarks to the media, I can't imagine that Walt would have allowed Annette Funicello to work for his studio and company ever again. Can you?

I don't know, depends on how petty Walt was. We are talking about the guy who went in front of congress to accuse people of being communist with no proof so maybe.

ETA: Laugh all you want but I think you are missing the point. Setting my sarcasm aside for the moment, literally EVERYONE does things we can pick apart out of context to make them look bad.

We will never know, but I for one would be equally disgusted. We should not wish ill will or hate on people . We can disagree. Heck get angry. But talking the way she did is not good for anyone.

I think it’s important to note that those political remarks (which were indeed inappropriate and certainly warranted an apology) postdated the anti-Zegler rage that some of us here found baffling and disconcerting. Certain people were already very, very angry with her long before she uttered anything political—and all because she made some flippant remarks about an old film.

Go back further. This started because of her race - very powerful people were viciously attacking her before she said anything about the film.

To reiterate, a cacophony of voices, led by some of the most powerful people in the nation, attacked Zegler relentlessly because of her race. They then dug up and distorted comments she had made in order to swell the mob. When she lashed out at the group that included the attackers, she was condemned and made to apologize.

This is a pattern. Cruel, vicious attacks, but if anyone criticizes the attackers even in relatively mild terms, they scream about their victimhood and how unfair everyone is. It’s familiar bully behavior.

The obsession with Halle Bailey and Iman Vellani, when no one even mentions Owen Wilson, Harrison Ford or Jake Gyllenhal (nor really understands why I bring up their names unless they saw my prior posting on the subject) is the example.

Rachel actually made some political statements that were immature and therefore the vitriol is completely over the top. A deserved reaction mixed with the underlying undeserved reaction saved for young actresses. Bonus points if they aren’t Caucasian.

Because many (predominately) middle / older age men love piling on the young actresses, even when they don’t deserve it. @Dranth is pointing out the hypocrisy, rightfully.

I’ve barely stepped into it and didn’t engage in the last dedicated thread, because even if I think a couple comments were immature and inappropriate, she’s most certainly facing a overly sufficient amount of backlash. Nor do I honestly care that much about a Snow White remake. Bring on Thunderbolts*

Not surprised. I know everyone online is saying it’s great but I didn’t think it worked well as a comedy. The average post-2020 Pixar title has better jokes, to say nothing of the classic Looney Tunes shorts.

This, and before people get all upset, that doesn't mean everyone who is down on her or disagrees with her is like that, but there is a very vocal group who do this exact thing and far too many people sit by silently without pushing back.

For the record I didn’t say that. I said targeting of every young actress of colour to the exclusion of white older male leads with equally controversial or sometimes even bigger flopping Disney products. I’m not applying a label to that either, pointing it out.

This is a wider commentary on the internet at large. If you don’t fall into that grouping, you aren’t falling into a pattern. Which I really don’t think your posting history suggests.

I myself am saying Rachel deserves some criticism and agree with you. But she falls into a more heavily targeted group for internet bullying from the jump. Fortunately she apologized for the worst of it at least, but it was still stupid and immature.

I doubt anyone here is doing that. But if you read any article on Snow White and its controversies, race does come up as the initial objection to her. Based on that, people who really are racist started blowing out of proportion what she said about Snow White.

Not really going out on limb here but, looking at the abysmal weekend numbers, there are way too many tentpoles clustered up in May-July. Thunderbolts, Stitch, Elio, Fantastic Four, Mission Impossible, Jurassic World, Superman, F1, How to Train Your Dragon, etc.

How many casual moviegoers are going to shell out and go to see more than two of those? Could imagine a number of these doing ok numbers (e.g. $200M+ domestic) that still barely eke out a profit or fail to launch a franchise.

And if Superman doesn’t connect with casual movie watchers, WB is gonna look like it’s in total free fall.

It's crazy that in an age when media content can go viral at any time, Hollywood insist their big movies can only come out between May-July or Nov/Dec. We have box office precedence for hits outside those timeframes.
