Disney’s Mufasa - the lion king

Just like when you said Moana flatlined and it ended up coming back and performing extremely well.
I believe I said it wouldn’t be a billion dollar mega hit because it wasn’t on that trajectory and has very meh reviews. Those and I were wrong…the D overpowered and won the day.

Something just “do”…stitch…minions…Moana.
Good to be the king there.

Mufasa is well reviewed (except for the Brits…who invented the word “rubbish” and always explain Americans way better than any American could)…but nobody is really biting

A 50% hold great…but percentage mean more on big numbers

Did a $22 mil domestic second weekend and now sub $1.5 dailies in NA?…we’re at day 20…

It may be bad timing…a release on 12/20 is too late…I think the market has shift and will move more towards thanksgiving from now on…but this one isn’t gonna reach orbit

It’s January 10th…one of the weakest movie going times of the year. The situation is not favorable. Less severe drops on small takes are difficult to fill the collection plate with…

We’ll see. Heard this “it will keep making money cause of the brand” stuff before. We don’t need to go over fhe long…but distinguished…list of names on that list.
I'm not using "the brand" here, I'm just using the box office. The holds have been incredible, in spite of its lower opening. Holds like this don't typically happen no matter the "brand", even MCU, Avatar, and others have had 50-60% drops by the 2nd/3rd week. Sonic hasn't even had those same holds and it opened alongside Mufasa. Also I suspect that domestic gap between the two will narrow even more.

Also the time of year with nothing major opening until the end of the month is actually in its favor. Its why its been able to continue the holds its had. Had something major opened it would have been a complete dismal failure. At least now it breaks even, and likely squeaks out a small profit. So I think it has one more good weekend before it actually "flatlines".

Dude…the money is made up front and you know it.

Just being contrarian

Let’s play a game:

Find the one that doesn’t fit

Barbie
Inside out 2
Avatar/Avatar2
Maverick
Wicked
Mufasa

Take your time

Dude, where did I ever say it was a box office success especially compared to those others? All I’ve said was that I think it has one more weekend of gains before it goes flat. I don’t think that is too far of a stretch in thinking considering its current holds.

So you’re arguing a point that doesn’t need to be argued. I’ve been on the record saying Mufasa was gonna be a box office failure. All I’ve changed in my stance is that it’s no longer going to lose money during theatrical. That doesn’t change that it’s a failure overall. Stop having those conversations in your head that doesn’t involve the other person.

I could see Den of Thieves' 2 winning the weekend. But who knows, too much good football on this weekend to get that demo out to the theater

The point was movies with “legs” have a certain draw/characteristic to them…

Mufasa doesn’t have it. Like poor Hailee (on the Daisy Ridley path to fame and fortune now)…

Well just kick dirty on it.

I’m petty fascinated to see how 2025 goes for the Disney box office slate? A lot more titles this year. Could be some knockouts and some bombs…

Anyone who follows box office should have known a billion dollars was not off the table for Moana based on trajectory…. Box office usually drops in the weeks after Thanksgiving due to holiday distractions then picks up Christmas and New Years week…. Usually 2 of the busiest all year… especially for family films…. These observations happen annually

I didn’t say “off the table”…didn’t think it would get there…it did

Congrats! Except it really shouldn’t matter to us because we compartmentalize everything Disney does instead of zooming out and looking at the broad picture.

It will come down to how much power Disney has to keep Mufasa in the theaters. Its now holding at 3925 theaters,
As long as its in theaters, money will continue to trickle in.

It might be helpful for you to know Mufasa already has had legs. Amazing legs.

.Like poor Hailee

I really don’t understand your weird obsession with this actress. From what I know about you, you aren’t that type of person. She was a lovely actress who was graceful and said absolutely nothing controversial during the entire films run, before or after. She auditioned for the role and the film creators adapted the film because she auditioned so well, there was no social push from her end other than wanting a job and having nostalgic deference for the source material. She did a wonderful job, even if I think the broader movie was a hot CGI emesis.

I think you’ve put her into a boxed category that she doesn’t belong in because you weren’t paying that close attention and have made an assumption again. But it’s making you seem to be something I legitimately don’t think you are every time you trot out her name.

A lot of people post without paying attention but there’s no reason to raise it to an art form.

You understand that it started out way underachieving…therefore it throws all the graphs off?

Ok

I like to do “hailee” thing because if you recall (and most will claim ignorance) in June of 2023 it was suggest by a few (usual suspects) that there was a vast racist conspiracy against that movie that was artificially depressing that movies take. It’s up thread if you want to go down cherry tree memory lane…

Or maybe…as was also said at that time…it was just a bad idea nobody wanted that resulted in a forgettable movie? Cause no one even remembers it except for the clearances bins at Walmart.

The bigots didn’t rule the day. The failure at the studio did.

Peeps like my boy Caspy did the “poor Hailee” thing…like it was his niece. So cynical and distasteful.

That’s WAY too many screens for the business it’s doing. That per screen average is atrocious
Sonic had 297, Nosferatu had 434, A Complete Unknown had 349 per screen yesterday…. It is happening industry wide.. as somebody who goes to the theater weekly…my wish is for a greater variety of smaller movies to get a shot…. But that is the state of the industry right now

So this is the reason why the 2.5x rule is better, it takes all the guess work out of having to calculate for marketing which is an unknown variable.
It’s also inherently imprecise. Not arguing against it as a handy tool to guesstimate, but I also wouldn’t present the numbers as hard fact or even profitability vs. not.
The rule still holds
Guideline.
That doesn’t change that it’s a failure overall.
It’s not a failure, full stop.

It also sets up the next potential blockbuster: The Lion Queen (after at least 4 years have passed.) Genpop is now, or soon will be, acquainted with/rooting for Simba’s daughter. The dads don’t seem to fare too well in this family.
