Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

It seems pretty inevitable that Moana 2 is going to cross a billion before the end of the year. Absolutely am anticipating the announcement of another sequel to a recent film in the coming months. My bets are on an Encanto follow up right now.

and then Disney Live Action a veritable train wreck of phoned in remakes as it has more or less been for a decade under Alan.
WDS had fixed their theatrical flop problem by pretty much stopping all theatrical wide-releases up until now.

Coming out of the pandemic, those releases have been:

2020 Mulan
2021 Cruella
2021 Jungle Cruise
2023 The Little Mermaid
2023 Indy 6
2023 Haunted Mansion

A mixed bag, IMO.

WDS made plenty of other content in that time frame, but it was all shunted to D+. Mercifully, considering it included the Live-Action Pinocchio and other forgettable stuff.

Upcoming...
2024 Mufasa
2025 Snow White
2025 Stitch
2025 Freakier Friday
2025 TRON: Ares

I just saw the new Snow White trailer and it looks great. Are they running it before Moana 2?

I showed it to my husband and he wants to see it even though he has no interest in Disney movies. Cheers to the Evil Queen!
I have yet to see the new Snow White trailer to any movie I have seen…that includes Wicked and Moana

So they’re making live-action Moana (when’s that open?) and Moana 3. I guess when you stop successfully introducing new franchises you have to keep going back to the well. Suppose they’re cashing out in 2024 while they still can.
They'll still do originals! Give them time! And besides, they have to do sequels to get back on the box office.

When? Every non-Pixar animated movie on the announced slate into 2027 is either a sequel or a live-action remake. That also doesn't count Toy Story 5 or Incredibles 3.
Well, both Raya and Encanto had great critics' and audience scores, but floundered financially in the post-Covid malaise.

Strange World and Wish, however, failed on all accounts.

That's why the mandate to stick with proven franchises. Very clearly announced by Iger in quarterly calls.

Once everything is buoyed up with tentpole hits, I'm sure they'll return to new stories (as if most of their stories weren't already from fairy tales and children's books).

I kinda hope they hold off on Encanto 2 and Moana 3 until 2030 and 2031, since 2025-2028 already has Zootopia 2, an untitled original, Frozen III, and Frozen IV.

Plus, there’s still the ever lingering possibility Tiana gets turned into The Princess and the Frog 2 for movie theaters in 2029.

So… don’t rush those two films.

Lol, you really need to get off that 2029 that doesn't even exist yet.

I don’t think that PatF is going to get turned into a film. There isn’t really demand for that. The only reason Moana’s show was converted was because of the undeniable popularity of the original film. People like PatF, but not enough for Disney to spend the money to pivot away from a series that’d due to release in less than a year.

Well, we’ll see what happens.

But I’d like to imagine there are at least c-suite level conversations at Disney headquarters going on now about doing that.

I certainly have no problem with people enjoying it, but it most certainly is not for me.

My issue is more that it is leaking into everything and you don't really get much if any straightforward good versus evil stories anymore. Everything seems to need to have nuance and respecting the villain or bringing down the hero or making endings that have indifference instead of good "triumphing". I feel like that should have a place as well but such black and white tales have been greatly reduced in mainstream entertainment.
I thought it was clever when I read The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs. But that was about it. I have no interest in learning about why the wicked witch of the west isn’t so wicked or is wicked but has a good reason for it or whatever the story is. It’s like everyone forgot that the “true” story of the pigs was a joke.
