DHS Monster Inc Land Coming to Disney's Hollywood Studios

For a while Disney was the overweight person that would do anything to lose weight... except diet and exercise. Now they're at least building new attractions because Universal showed them that the Central Florida tourism market isn't mature.

Side note to the thread… Universal Creative had a booth at Maker Faire Orlando last weekend. They sent some of their engineering and support folks to talk shop and to speak on a few panels. It was pretty awesome to dip into even just what they could divulge.

Disney’s announced plans… Well, they’re plans, especially if their planners can’t see past the berm. They’re trying? Maybe? A little?

In my eyes, MV3D is equivalent to Captain EO, It's Tough to Be a Bug, Philharmagic, etc... Easily replaceable, air conditioned napping venues. While they all incorporate some sort of kinetic audience interaction, they're all quite played out as groundbreaking attractions, and let's face it, they're not anchor attraction worthy. In regards to the Monster's height requirement, who cares? DHS is supposed to be catering to audiences different than MK or Epcot. Sure, a second ride for the kiddies should be added to make the land actually feel like a land, but it doesn't have to be much. Just not another carousel, lol.

Where did this idea Muppets would be repurposed as a show come from? Everything I’ve seen indicates this will be a land with ONE (sub 60 second) ride.

You know, if we didn’t need full lands for every new attraction Monsters could fit elsewhere in Muppets plaza… but that’s crazy talk.

If you go off the concept art there are other things filling the "land" than the main headline attactrion, but fair, it does seem a bit lite on things to do to be considered a "land"

I disagree though that you could simply place a Monsters ride within the Muppets area. Look to Laugh Floor, just because they put it re doesn't mean it really fits there.

That is fair, but if it’s yanked out to be replaced by a coaster and nothing else, that’ll really suck. If they were putting in a show with the coaster, it would be more palatable. I like MV3D but that’s no reason to keep it forever. I just want the park to have more to do.

The art suggests the ride will just replace Muppets and expand the building back.

I get that a 3D (or 4D) movie experience isn't as unique and amazing as they once were. But I would still argue that all the ones you mentioned above are good attractions. I mean when it's over are most people smiling at being entertained or angry that it was just some stupid 3D movie?

Also, I wish they'd bring back a few more simulator rides like Star Tours and Body Wars. I think those are still a lot of fun and it's a proven ride system. Seems like putting in a few more of those around the parks could go a long way to beefing up the experience count in all the parks (looking at you World Showcase!)

Do you remember when you could walk into any restaurant (i.e. Sci Fi, Brown Derby) any time of the day and get a seat? I do... That all changed when they went to ADR's. So even the most basic TSRs starting having waitlists for mediocre fare. Same goes for the attractions that Disney continues to milk for years and years due to their cheap operating costs. They've given false demand to Figment, MV3D, and others in order to disperse park goers and charge more for LL..

anywho, hope they build 2 rides for Monsters land. Hope to see ST rethemed. Hope to see Indy change into something else when Dino is converted. Hope to see a proper villians coaster...

I can also wish in one hand in crap in the other and see which one fills up faster.

They need more short wait/walk-ons, not fewer.

Taking away stuff like MV3D makes the park experience worse for everyone, even people who don't enjoy it/weren't going to see it. A park that's solely D and E ticket attractions with nothing else would be miserable.

I agree, but at least put some upgrades in these rides. And yes, I know MV3D had projector enhancements done semi recently...

MuppetVision is in a weird spot because you can’t really update it. It’s not like Philharmagic or Star Tours where you can add a segment. Not only would that be difficult with MV3D’s tight script, but it also would be jarring to hear characters with a different voice immediately after their original performer.

I do not want to hear the awful current voice of Kermit ever! There are people out there that can sound like Jim did! Heck the current guy who does Bugs Bunny is pretty great at it.

The problem with that is that Kermit’s performer has to be a great puppeteer on top of a good sound-alike, which severely limits the field. I personally wish they’d gotten Peter Linz (the current performer on Sesame) to do it, but I’m sure the Hensons/Muppet Studios have their reasons.

Oh I hope not. Space Mountain is still 100x better than Tron to me. Much more fun and exciting ride imo.

Hoping this hedges closer to Space than Tron.

i dont think tron is meant as a replacement for sm, but I think the new SM getting built in Tokyo will hopefully replace the SM in the states if its as good as it looks

I am curious, would people be mad if Indy Stunt show was taken away instead of Muppets. I ask because even though it's not rumored at all, if we had to build Monsters somewhere other than AC then I'd prefer the Indy Star Tours region

I wouldn't be made at the show itself, its more nostalgia for me know then anything else, but I'd be upset because that show eats a lot of people and helps spread crowds out a bit. You lose that, I'm not sure what DS would look like.

Muppets is the funniest, cleverest attraction in all of WDW and it isn’t close. WDW has been losing wit at a decisive rate ever since the EPCOT classics closed decades ago, and frankly there’s very little left at the resort. If folks want to embrace coasters-in-a-box with a poorly integrated IP slapped on the front, fine. But don’t pretend something isn’t being lost when you systematically rip out every little bit of non-toddler-humor and intelligence from the park.

Honestly, the parallels between the Muppets IP and Disney parks is significant. Both built their popularity on having a bit of an edge, a wink-and-nudge jokiness directed at adults, but corporate cowardice and parental perception of them as “kids only” has watered them down or outright destroyed them.

Eric Bauza? I haven't heard him do Kermit, but I have no doubt that he'd be a great Kermit.

I actually like Matt Vogel's Kermit, but I would've been really happy with Peter Linz being Kermit's new performer.
