DAK 'Encanto' and 'Indiana Jones'-themed experiences at Animal Kingdom

I know a lot of people here aren't not happy about the fact that there might not be any animals in this land, but personally it doesn't really bother me. Considering up until recently, I didn't even know DinoLand had a crocodile exhibit and I think it's good that the space in between Indiana Jones and Encanto might be a play area. So that we're not losing anything for small children who don't want to do Encanto and for parents who just need to let their kids blow off steam. Kids just need places to run around and have fun and they've been removing that from the parks for a while. Bringing that back would be great even if it could be at the cost of animal exhibits. Even though this part of the park never really had any to begin with, so it doesn't really bother me because of that.

People just really love to complain on here, if it's not their exact vision it's wrong and bad.

You think the reason why they're not gonna do any animals is because it'd be too expensive? Or because they don't want the guys who went after SeaWorld to get on their cases?

My guess is a combination of factors. I.e.:

- “Animal experiences” are a prominent thing in kid’s entertainment now. Pretty locally around my area, you could feed a giraffe, pet a wallaby, drive right past a zebra, swim with otters, handle various reptiles, snorkel with stingrays, pet / feed a sloth… that’s within a 0-3 hour radius, I’m sure there’s much more available near the county’s biggest cities. When that’s going on at the local mall or library, and Disney has to offer less in terms of up-close experiences due to liability and their crowd levels, my guess is that it’s not a money making investment for them right now. AK is already absolutely full of animal enclosures and yet people complain it’s a “half day” park. If most people were checking out every trail and enclosure, I don’t think you’d hear those complaints. In the 90s when AK was built you didn’t see a lot of exotic animals outside of the zoo or circus. Now they seem to be everywhere. (Whether they should be is of course another question, but for now, just saying kids these days can pet a sloth which was not at all a thing when I was growing up.)

- There’s the potential backlash factor, as you mentioned. Animals in captivity is a hot topic right now.

- Animal care is expensive and can also be prohibitive if done correctly. Animals may be sensitive to certain noises or sounds, for example, making building loud attractions nearby a no-go.

- Animals cannot legally be trademarked and turned into IP. Yet… (Does anyone remember the Ringling / Barnum and Bailey real live unicorn from the 80s? Possibly only a matter of time before someone genetically engineers a pink pony with wings or something and then the Supreme Court is debating whether or not that can be trademarked, but we’re not there just yet.) And right now that means they are by default never going to fit the IP mandate.

I’m curious if they’ll re-theme the area outside the land’s boundaries or leave it generic looking.

(When walking into Dinoland from Discovery Island, the walkway to your left, before the Boneyard, running along the amphitheater’s edge, past the Theatre in the Wild and to the bridge to Asia)

I don’t think it’s happening, unfortunately. Play scape instead.
They make an entire continent for an animal park and they don't even have animals. I'm fully convinced the Disney execs only care about the brand synergy and didn't let the imagineers add animals to the land because there's no direct ROI.

>make land utilizing the region that has the Amazon Rainforest, home to one of the diversity hotspots in nature
>No animals

lmaooooo

i still think we'll see Capybaras eventually but I'm disappointed animal-wise if these are close to final/final plans.

No animals in Disney's Animal Kingdom featured in the land that in real life contains the most bio diversity on the planet.

Animals need taking care of and they can't sell ILL to them.

I'd honestly be surprised to see any new live animal exhibits going into the park about animals ever again.

I'm sure there are swaths of management that would love to downsize what they already have there, now.

I’m willing to let the “no animals” slide only because it sounded like an either/or scenario.

It’s important for this (and every) park to have a themed playground IMO.

There’s really no where else you could put one without taking another attraction offline or reconfiguring backstage roads, something that’s not very realistic for a project of that small scale.

An Amazon Rainforest River Safari would be amazing though tbh.
See, that's the frustrating thing about this project. A Tropical Americas/South America land at Animal Kingdom has the potential to be great if they focused on the animals of that region/continent. But nope, instead we get two attractions based on franchises starring humans.

After studying the permit set, I am going with the following...

View attachment 823008

The "Possible Animal Exhibit" is the new play area, probably Mayan themed. Allegedly.

The blue buildings with the current Dinorama restrooms are restrooms and a new character greeting venue. Allegedly.

The Carousel will also be the DVC kiosk location, as well as covered queue area. Allegedly.

The long, rectangular blue area across from the kiosk is supposedly part of the village theming. Allegedly.

And the circular thing on the path into the land is the new fountain. Allegedly.

It's almost as if this land wasn't originally designed with the sizable trail space some of the other lands have. 🤔

I mean, it's disappointing, but they're reusing most of the infrastructure, and there wasn't much there for the animals. I'd prefer preserving the attraction count with the play area in this instance. The one habitat that was in Dinoland was a nothingburger.
I haven't been to Animal Kingdom in over a decade, but I remember there was a fairly large and empty shaded area near Dinosaur. It looked like an area where they planned to build more animal exhibits but ran out of time and/or money to complete.

How long until the fountain becomes a planter?
