'Strange World' Disney's 2022 Animated Film

OT but this was so terrifying & hilarious at the same time that I had to share it with the gang here...

The girls aisles had no Strange World merchandise, but all other Disney franchises had carpet bombed the entire toy department. Especially the Princesses and cutesy things in the girls aisles. Frozen, Encanto, Moana, Little Mermaid, and on and on. But then, as I was scanning the shelves for anything Strange World, my heart cried out in terror. They are selling this to children!?!....

It's a play set where your child gets to pretend to run her own Disney Store franchise! She can mark up merchandise and leverage corporate synergy to her heart's content! 🤢

And look closely... there's even miniature theft-prevention gates at the entrance to this magical kingdom of retail! Bob Chapek's attention to detail is legendary! o_O

That should go viral. What a sad commentary on this company.

Why do you care?

Oh, I love a good Target run! Don't you?!? o_O

You should see me when I get to that candle aisle. I just go crazy smelling all of them; wrinkling my nose and gagging a bit at the gross ones, and inhaling deeply and profoundly at the yummy ones. It's not a Target run without a stop at the candles. (Which I did this evening after I tried to find Strange World stuff with no success. I came home with something called Cedarwood Musk, with 3 wicks. It's going now! It will help La Jolla transition from beachy to cozy for the next few months until spring arrives.)

I thought you were moving to Utah?

I am! How kind of you to remember. Only two more days here.

But this is the old family beach house, and it's not going anywhere. My sister and her kids/family will all be here for Thanksgiving, and then some of them back again for Christmas. Cedarwood Musk seemed to be perfect for that, without getting into cloying novelty scents called "JingleBerry" or "Snowy Silent Nightz".

I thought it was soon. And you’re going to have to get used to an actual winter, aren’t you? In my experience, moving can be a mixed bag. Fun new things, but missing the familiar. Wishing you the best.

Thank you, I'm so excited! 😄

Although, it's a 6 and a half hour drive from my new home in Utah to the family beach house in La Jolla (including a quick stop for gas and In-N-Out in north Las Vegas, or 8 hours if you stop for a full swanky lunch on the Las Vegas Strip). And the beach house in La Jolla is 90 minutes south of Disneyland. So the Disney theme park fan community won't be entirely rid of me. ;)

And I lived in New England for quite a few years several decades ago, so I know winter driving (among horrible Boston drivers, no less!). I was an avid skier in my youth too, and I love cold weather. I can't wait!

But the way things are being operated, and the way things physically look, in the American Disney theme parks now.... I'm mostly just looking forward to my return to Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea during a Japan trip I have planned for '23.

And not just those movies, but Titan AE and The Iron Giant were also financial failures upon their initial release.

The track record for Western animated sci-fi in theaters is pretty bad, regardless of any one film's quality. Lilo and Stitch and Wall-E appear to be the main exceptions, but the former isn't really hard sci-fi after the prologue and Wall-E was released at a time when Pixar had a near flawless track record for critical and commercial success.

Given all that, it's surprising this movie even got green lit in the first place.

However, the lack of substantial promotion 2 months out suggests that Disney may have already regretted that decision.
The Iron Giant was a victim of a self-admitted terrible ad campaign. It's regarded as one of the best animated films ever made. WB felt so bad at how awful they did one year they ran it for 24 hours straight on Cartoon Network :D

Not completely true. Netflix is giving Knives Out 2 a week in theaters but they didn’t give Blonde a wide release. It played on a handful of screens. White Noise is out in December but I’m skeptical it’ll play in multiplexes. Maybe it will. Not sure about Amazon or what prestige titles they have forthcoming. Sorta seems they’ve backed off feature productions?
Blonde had the kiss of death NC-17 rating. None of the major chains would have touched it.

It was also nearly three hours long and only 42% positive on Rotten Tomatoes.
Blonde was also just in poor taste. Ana De Armas gives an excellent performance and the cinematography and score are all top-notch. But the movie is just three hours of Marilyn being physically, sexually and emotionally abused. And the way it was done made it feel like the director was reveling in her misery rather than trying to shine a light on an important issue. You leave the movie feeling like he didn't actually care about Marilyn or raise awareness about the abuse but instead wanted to make a graphic, shocking movie that would create buzz and awards hype over how far it went. The whole thing felt very exploitative and lacking in compassion. I would only give it a 3 or 4/10, and that is only because of De Armas's performance.

Blonde would have flopped big time… my wife and I were looking forward to it… as my wife is very into the history of Marilyn… but we have heard it icky and exploitive… we have not even watch it on Netflix and I am not sure we will since I had heard it is not very factual… I have heard Ana De Armis is fantastic though and deserves an Oscar Nomination but probably will not receive one due to the awful movie it is attached to

Hey I liked Fun and Fancy Free, Ichabod and Mr. Toad, and The Three Cabalerros!
I don't hate the package films, but it is easily my least favorite era of Disney.

I like the Mickey and the Beanstalk portion of Fun and Fancy Free. It's an admittedly classic short and I loved it as a kid. But the Bongo the Bear portion was always dull to me. And the live-action bits with Luana Patten being alone at a party with Edgar Bergen and his creepy puppets...haven't aged well. I know Charlie McCarthy was popular in the 40s, but the puppet just comes off as creepy nowadays. You feel like yelling "Run Luana! Before the psychopath and his evil puppets kill you!"

I like the Sleepy Hollow segment of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, but not the Wind in the Willows.

But Saludos Amigos is super dull (although interesting from a historical perspective as in why it was made), and Make Mine Music and Melody Time were crappy Fantasia rip-offs.

The Three Caballeros is an amusing, chaotic mess.

I honestly enjoyed "The Whale Who Wanted to Sing at the Met" from Melody Time plus I can never get tired of seeing some of Ward Kimball's animated works in some of those films.

That is the answer to the question "What do you like about Target?", which I did not ask. My question was why do you care about what merchandise does or does not exist for a movie that you do not care about and are not going to see?

I just thought it was interesting to see if anything existed in the toy aisles for Strange World. (Plus I love a good Target run!)

This is, after all, the big-budget family Christmas movie from Walt Disney Animation. Is it not?

Disney famously sells toys and kids stuff tied to their animated movies. At Christmas.

Or at least they used to.

Agreed on Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros from an artistic perspective. But the absolute gift that arrived 75 years later from those wartime films was the Viva Navidad! show at Disney California Adventure. That ranks up there with me as some of the best park entertainment of the last 30 years, alongside Fantasmic!, Paint The Night, and the Tiana showboat show (they only did for one year).

Viva Navidad! is Christmas perfection for me, and truly wonderful. I'd buy a ticket to DCA just to see that show (well, and maybe go to Cars Land)!

If you haven't seen it in person, check it out on YouTube from one of the better bloggers. Save it for after Thanksgiving though, because it's Christmas cheer overload. About all it's missing is Charo herself popping out of the top of the float! 😄
