We've been saying "Hold my beer" for 18+ months. It's not like doing it again is some wild surprise and different.I just think that your receive such push back on your posts because your always looking at worst case.
We need to look at the full range of possible outcomes and have a reasonable path forward based on likelihoods and adjusting to actuality as it unfolds.
We get lots of posts from people with opinions like:I'm a middle road person. Will do ask asked no worries but don't always love it. You asked if this can diminish on its own and it can. That's not denial, it's actually based on history of viruses. So don't take that article I posted as dismissive as it is a reality I am sure we will get to. What we do until then I do care about.
My answer is not "do not do anything that would have an impact." My answer is "I don't believe anything we do has an impact."We've been saying "Hold my beer" for 18+ months. It's not like doing it again is some wild surprise and different.
We get lots of posts from people with opinions like:
- No mask mandates
- No vaccine mandates
- No vaccine passports
- No restrictions on capacity
- No restrictions on travel
Which all basically add up to "do not do anything that would have an impact". The question wasn't about if people do the stuff we're asked to do today. Most people posting here, even those who hate it, do whatever is asked. It was about, if we're not going to do any of those things, what are we going to do to reduce community transmission? The answer from that group seems to be "nothing". We just hope that it holds true that it get's weaker over time and we don't get a mutation that's unfortunate. It may happen. But, the plan from the group of "don't do anything" isn't to help with that outcome at all.
It might turn out fine.
It might not.
I'm tired of hearing people say "we cannot do X" but they also have no other plan beyond that assumption and hope that "it'll all just work out". That's why, while I hate @DisneyCane 's answer, it's at least honest. There's no dependency on "it'll all just work out", it's acceptance that if what's going on today stays exactly the same (or even gets worse), that is completely fine. There's nothing that needs to get better, the status quo today is fine.
I see people in 3 groups:
- Let's do X to try and reduce spread. For whatever X they want, and there are lots of options people may pick.
- Let's do nothing, it's fine now.
- Let's do nothing, it'll just get better eventually.
That last one is a croc. They should own it that they're the second, that it's fine now. It's a hope and wish that it'll just get better. It hasn't gotten better for 2 years. Maybe the next mutation that replaces Omicron will be better. Maybe it'll be more mild. Maybe it'll be a larger vaccine escape. Maybe it'll be all of those things. And, maybe it'll be worse. The only thing we can say for sure, whatever new variant replaces Omicron will be more infectious and easier to spread. We can definitively say that, since that's what will allow it to supplant Omicron.
I'm not saying the two of you are in the third group, but that's the group I was asking to respond with what the plan was beside just hope.
That makes one of usIt’s unfortunate the mask-at-WDW thread had to close. Expecting movement soon.
No we cannot - not anymore than you can say this will never end. It could be same spread, less or more. If you know it is more spread so certainly, then you need to admit you know it won't be a worry in the future. The hope is it is so mild we don't even notice the spread. How fast won't matter. If it gets worse we adjust. The thing is unless this is a life eradicating pandemic globally - it is not - it will get better. We've been saying "Hold my beer" for 18+ months. Mmmm kayThat makes one of us
I was reading about this last night. For anyone who chose not to read the article here are the highlights. And yet, there are people who still say "it's just the flu"
"In an analysis of more than 11 million U.S. veterans’ health records, researchers found the risk of 20 different heart and vessel maladies was substantially increased in veterans who had COVID-19 1 year earlier, compared with those who didn’t. The risk rose with severity of initial disease and extended to every outcome the team examined, including heart attacks, arrhythmias, strokes, cardiac arrest, and more. Even people who never went to the hospital had more cardiovascular disease than those who were never infected."
. “We found an increased risk of cardiovascular problems in old people and in young people, in people with diabetes and without diabetes, in people with obesity and people without obesity, in people who smoked and who never smoked.”
"For example, veterans who had had COVID-19 faced a 72% higher risk of heart failure after 12 months than those in a control group who didn’t test positive. "
Even if that’s how this shakes out I just don’t see a realistic alternative. And I have yet to see anyone present one. We have tried lots of things and omicron is so contagious that even the fully vaccinated have been infected in droves. Thankfully they don’t tend to get very ill. It’s so rare for a child to have symptoms if vaccinated. I have been on the very conservative side of how to live with this virus. We mask, are vaxxed and I think it should be mandatory for kids to be vaccinated for school and everyone else to travel on public transportation. But it isn’t up to me and omicron just isn’t a serious enough disease to justify the continued use of mitigation. We should all be fully vaccinated. It you are not then you are a fool. That’s that and the rest of us would like to move on. And yes, there are some still at high risk as with every disease. And yes, it’s awful and unfair. And yes, a new variant may arrive that requires us to tighten up again. But this is not that time. This is precisely why I have just cringed whenever people are "whatever, I don't care, I'm vaccinated, so it's just like getting the sniffles..."
There have been warning signs since the beginning that the effects could be far more long-lasting. Unfortunately, it seems the data is indeed pointing in that direction.
Great, going to Universal first week of MarchUniversal Orlando reportedly moving back to optional masks for vaccinated guests beginning tomorrow -

They know. I don’t think it will be effective tomorrow like Universal but very soon.About time, your turn Disney
Not only did the Vegas casinos drop them but it seemed to be instant. As soon as I saw the news that the Nevada Gaming Commission removed the mandate I went to the MGM resorts "safety" page and all mention of masks was already removed.
I was thrilled since I'll be in Vegas next month. I hope Disney makes the policy change before next week when I'm there although I'm mostly going for the art festival at Epcot so I won't be indoors much.
Due to California removing the statewide mandate on 2/15 and Orange County, CA not having one, I wouldn't be shocked if Disney announces no more masks at Disneyland or WDW starting on 2/15 or shortly thereafter. Then they don't need to have separate policies for each coast. It’s unfortunate the mask-at-WDW thread had to close. Expecting movement soon.
They are indeed trying to do this all at once. It’s simpler and only generates the headline on CNN once. Friday evenings are appealing but they may not be ready today so perhaps next Friday leading into the holiday weekend. All I know is plans are under way.Due to California removing the statewide mandate on 2/15 and Orange County, CA not having one, I wouldn't be shocked if Disney announces no more masks at Disneyland or WDW starting on 2/15 or shortly thereafter. Were you at work yesterday? I'm curious what percentage of casino patrons still wore masks after it wasn't required.Judging by my shopping experience yesterday I don’t think businesses are going to have much choice.
I take my mask everywhere in case a store requests it, Lowes had please use masks signs out front so I wore mine like the polite person I am, I’d guess maybe 50% were masked, the donut shop didn’t have signs and the employees were unmasked so I didn’t bother, but many customers did and I’d guess 50% masked, went grocery shopping and they still had signs out front so I masked up and was amongst the approximately 50% masked…
The barn doors are open, even if a businesses requests masks it’s probably beyond their means to police it now because without a direct threat behind it too many people will do whatever they want.
It’s unfortunate people don’t have more respect for others, it would go a long way to solving most of our national problems, I’m all about personal freedom but with that freedom also comes personal responsibility also, if a business says to mask up I will, it’s their business and I’ll abide by their rules (or go elsewhere), unfortunately I seem to be a minority in this country in that regard.

Chapek wants this done.
Because I text with people who would know. While Disney notoriously gets cold feet at the last moment this seems to be set in motion.Just cause I am curious......how are you so sure?
No, I was off yesterday, honestly I’m not sure it’ll make much of a difference in the casinos, even with the mask mandate most people had a drink or a cigarette in their hand so despite everyone technically being compliant with the rules very few people actually wore masks most of the time anyway (in casinos). Suburbia compliance was probably 99% though. Were you at work yesterday? I'm curious what percentage of casino patrons still wore masks after it wasn't required.
