Covid-19: More than 100 test positive on an Italy-India flight

They were among 179 passengers on the flight from Milan which landed in Amritsar on Wednesday.

Nearly an entire plane full of passengers is found to have Covid. Kind of shoots that whole "planes are safe due to recirculated air" thing right out of the sky.

It isn't like a movie or TV show where there is insta-infection. Exactly zero of the people who tested positive upon arrival were infected during that flight. There is an incubation period to build up enough viral load to test positive.

This story doesn't shoot anything out of the sky.

So they had 100 positive on a plane? How are the other 79 and crew doing?

It said it was a chartered plane too which leads me to believe this was a group trip somewhere.... so maybe the others were lucky, their vaccines/whatever kept them negative and the crew may not catch it depending.

I do know more than one house who had a unboosted or unvaccinated kid test positive and none of the rest caught it (or sometimes even just primary care giver). Even living in the same house.

Any advice on booster? I am booked for Sunday. Should I stick with Pfizer or get a Moderna? The choice!!

I had Moderna for all three and I felt not great for 2 days after my 2nd dose and 1 day after the booster. My wife had Pfizer for all three and did not feel bad after her initial shots or booster. Our 13yo had Pfizer with no side effects in July, but our 11yo had a puffy eye (a known side effect looks like) in December.

Having said that, we will not be getting the booster for our 13yo.

I had Pfizer for all three shots. Only side effect was with the booster, which was mild drowsiness, but nothing severe enough to halt daily activities. Also some mild soreness that felt no worse than just doing a workout. That was on the day after. On the second day after, I was pretty much back to myself.

Sorry for being nosey. Just mostly curious here. Like I said a cousin who traveled with friends had someone in their party have issues returning to PR after vacation. I don't think my cousin tested positive - at least I have zero indication they did from their social media (currently still posting pics of the cruise)

Why not? I know enough with breakthrough (albeit mild or asymptomatic) that I'd rather not perpetuate a cycle of spread whenever possible.

Contact tracing in general is still poor. Without it, it's hard to say there was a "super spreader event". On the reverse side, there's so much transmission going on that it's hard to say X was obviously where a bunch of people got it without doing the tracing.


It's better in some places. My kids say they see the contact tracing in school every day. Checking who meets their close contact definition and who doesn't. So far, neither have been a close contact. Both their schools have over 8% of students/staff out as positive in the last 2 weeks currently. Just waiting for them to go virtual for 2 weeks. It was supposed to happen at 5% and did for 11 of 207 schools. Then when all but 8 broke 3% and most of them over 5%, they reconsidered the line. It's 5.76% of 177,898 people across all the schools. I think they're hoping for a snow day tomorrow to figure out a plan.

For extra fun, over 100 bus drivers beyond their substitute capacity are also out. Lots of kids needed a ride yesterday and today, including mine.

Our county public transportation system is allowing middle and high school students to ride for free because of the shortage of school bus drivers. The school buses are still running, but it is inconvenient for riders because they are covering more stops.

Because we do not feel there is enough evidence to justify getting my 13yo daughter another shot. Everyone gets to make their own decision for their kids and we do not feel that we should get it for her or our 11yo who had a reaction to the initial doses.

I respect anyone else's decision for their kids and this is ours.

3 Pfizer, no pain or side effects. But will probably need another booster next month. Unless guidelines change again.

My quick Google search indicates she is the state secretary of agriculture. I'm no fan of what I know of DeSantis, but wouldn't this fall more under the auspices of the department of health?

Our county public transportation system is allowing middle and high school students to ride for free because of the shortage of school bus drivers. The school buses are still running, but it is inconvenient for riders because they are covering more stops.

Our county public transportation bus is always free for middle and high school students. It doesn't go to the schools near us though. I think it's the primary transport for some schools in the county though. In the more urban parts, not the burb part we live in.

I got to sit in like a half mile line at pick up. 9 busses for a middle school of about 800 kids didn't run.

I have no idea! I wasn’t disputing the point that one can catch COVID on a plane, merely pointing out that the story under discussion doesn’t really tell us anything about the effectiveness of the on-board air circulation. I’d be curious to know how many of the remaining passengers and crew test positive in the days ahead. That would be more telling.

I recall flying in summer 2020 on a plane one time with approx only 30 passengers on a 737 and all could spread out and lie across our seats if we wanted to. Upon entering I could smell the strong disinfectant in the air the cleaning crew used prior to us boarding. Several times the flight crew advised us upon the deep cleaning the planes are going through. Fast forward to 2021, the few times I flew there was no noticeable scent of disinfectant spray and no more talk from flight crew of deep cleaning the planes to combat covid. I still used my antiseptic handiwipes and wiped the entire seat, arm rest, tray table etc just as a habit.

The University of Florida updated their Omicron predictions for Florida today see: https://epi.ufl.edu/covid-19-resour...19-omicron-wave-projections-updated-0105.html

Effectively they expect it to peak by mid January and bottom out by the end of this month, there are already signs the case increase may be starting to slow or transmission has already peaked in Florida. Close to 80%+ of the people in Florida will catch it according to them. Deaths are projected to be 1/3 less than Delta even with way more cases. Part of the reason is Florida had its Delta wave earlier this year, where the midwest and Northeast were going through it when Omicron was introduced. So Deaths may be more in the Northeast/Midwest because of that.

Good news is that by mid to late February projections have cases going below they were at the end of November in Florida. The projections have been fairly accurate (until Omicron hit), you can see the others. Bad news, before then it'll spike hard and be a pain in January for all types of medical care facilities.

Florida was 9th out of 50th in testing in the US this past week too. Even with all the lines, etc. ICU use has decoupled from cases in Florida as well.
