Puerto Rico requires testing for all arrivals. They quarantined on arrival, and tested positive 5 days later.
If they didn't develop symptoms it would seem to indicate that the vaccine protected them from illness. If they didn't go home (I'm assuming) to Puerto Rico they would have never known they got infected.

I haven't asked how they're feeling as far as symptoms go, but there's a 5 day incubation, which makes perfect sense, as they've been back for 5 days in quarantine.

Why did they quarantine? That's not a requirement unless not vaccinated, or am I misunderstanding and they tested positive for return home and had to quarantine. Totally curious. The testing prior to arrival caught a friend of a cousin when returning home. They were on vacation and tested but had to stay behind and in isolation.

Per current rules on the island, to enter, you need proof of vaxx + negative test from previous 48 hours (or at minimum negative test from previous 48 hours). They weren't able to get tested before leaving, so they opted to quarantine and test once they got an appointment (which was 5 days later).

Ah thank you. I was aware of the rules of testing, but did not know they had back ups for those who did not test 48 hours to arrival - my cousin and friends planned and tested while on vacation together which is how the one got caught in it. So are your family symptomatic at all or just asymptomatic positives? If the latter it wouldn't be bad.

Anyone see the UF's latest prediction for Florida? Wonder if that'll hold. If so the spring/summer may be pretty good. I know ALOT of folks are ready to go have a nice summer break after this.

I hope this is true, it fits more with what happened in South Africa and would mean I could still do my Feb trip. This prediction obviously does not predict another varient, which is unknowable but they are right, Feb/March should be realitively safe once this wave is over.

Is funny how we have not heard about the classification of "super spreader event", either predictive or post event, in many months.
Maybe I have missed it.
Contact tracing in general is still poor. Without it, it's hard to say there was a "super spreader event". On the reverse side, there's so much transmission going on that it's hard to say X was obviously where a bunch of people got it without doing the tracing.

It's better in some places. My kids say they see the contact tracing in school every day. Checking who meets their close contact definition and who doesn't. So far, neither have been a close contact. Both their schools have over 8% of students/staff out as positive in the last 2 weeks currently. Just waiting for them to go virtual for 2 weeks. It was supposed to happen at 5% and did for 11 of 207 schools. Then when all but 8 broke 3% and most of them over 5%, they reconsidered the line. It's 5.76% of 177,898 people across all the schools. I think they're hoping for a snow day tomorrow to figure out a plan.

For extra fun, over 100 bus drivers beyond their substitute capacity are also out. Lots of kids needed a ride yesterday and today, including mine.

If things do clear a bit after this wave that begs the question. Will Disney and Universal lift their mask guidance?

I don’t know, and don’t care, I’ve been multiple times since masks (both under the all times in public rules and during the more relaxed rules) it doesn’t phase me.

Once a variant appears, the folks that create this model at UF for Florida seem to be spot on. Obviously, nobody can predict when a significant mutation will take place and what the characteristics of the new variant will be.

An interesting aside. I booked my 14yo for a booster. I looked today and it seems that there aren't bookings available for over a week at a lot of places. I wonder if people locally want the teens boosted to help or what.

My gut says they'll want a longer time of low cases in order to do so. I have a March and June trip and as much as it annoys me at times, we'll prepare for both. And yes, it annoys me having to put a mask on my face after the pool - so don't judge me on that. We lost masks to falling in water at the pool and it was annoying. I mask everywhere else locally.

Sent the texts to ask. Haven't heard back yet.
Sorry for being nosey. Just mostly curious here. Like I said a cousin who traveled with friends had someone in their party have issues returning to PR after vacation. I don't think my cousin tested positive - at least I have zero indication they did from their social media (currently still posting pics of the cruise)

My brother-in-law, his girlfriend, and a few family members went to WDW for 3 days over the New Year's holiday, returning home on the 1st of January.

They're back home now, and more than half of their party just tested positive for covid today. They are all vaxxed+boosted, were double masking the entire time at the parks (other than while eating/drinking and posing for photos outdoors), and would tell people in the parks to back up if they got too close for comfort. They even wore real NIOS N95s for their flights.

This **** is serious.
I'm local and I haven't stepped foot in a theme park since Mid December. Honestly the idea of the parks right now sound terrible. I went to DS last week for lunch and to pick up a present and even that felt a bit risky. I may consider going a few hours before close when the crowds are dying down and I can be outside, but you couldn't pay me to stand in Space Mountain queue or be in those Hagrid tunnels right now.

Something that stood out to me in the full report (that is linked to on that page) was this bullet item:
We find that the omicron wave in Florida is likely to cause many more infections than occurred during the delta wave, potentially infecting most of the state’s population in this wave alone.

The lack of appointment availability may have to do with staff shortages at pharmacies or vaccine centers, too.
