Yachtsman Steakhouse

My in-laws are celebrating their anniversary the last night we are in WDW. They chose the Yachtsman for dinner that night and we've got reservations, but now I'm second guessing it. We've never been there and we're going on one person's recommendation. Is it worth the two meal ticket on our DDP or should I encourage them to rethink it? If we should rethink it, where should I look at for a good steak at dinner time?

BTW, we will have a two kids with us, almost ages 5 and 9. The almost 9 year old girl has excellent behavior, the almost 5 year old boy can go either way.

Went there last month and thought it was very good. We paid cash, and thought the prices were a bit high (but what isn't in Disney) but the food to be very good. I don't think you are making a mistake at all by going there, and I highly recommend the Porterhouse and ordering a side of the Mac and Cheese (pay for it if you can't get it as a side on the plan).

We were at WDW last week and went to the Yachtsman late in the week for dinner. 100% worth it. It's one of our favorite restaurants. My wife and I both had steaks (fillet for me, NY strip for my wife) and they were fantastic.

It was our third time to visit the Yachtsman and each time has been great. This past time; however was the best.

Go, I don't think you'll regret it one bit.

My Dad loves The Yachtsman and we dined there for our Honeymoon and Anniversary past two years. We usually have a good time and meal, but last visit wasn't the best. For one, my wife got talked outta ordering the Lobster Ravioli (yeah we know its a steak house) for a dry, leathered NY Strip Steak . I went for the usual Filet Mignon but it was also dry and hardly any seasoning. Service was spotty. When we were finished we waited a half-hour before our waitress realized our dessert wasn't even brought out. We were thinking they changed chefs. Don't mean to sound negative and hope you have better results because it's too nice of a place to have our experience.
People BOAST about Le Cellier at Canada Pavillion in EPCOT. Have to try that too!

We loved the Yachtsman, the food is quite good and the atmosphere is great. Is it worth the 2 credits? Only you can decide that, but we have no problem paying for the meals there. It's your in-law's day and you let them pick so DO NOT try to change their mind, if you don't like it then it's only 1 meal out of your entire vacation. We have always run into kids there and most were well behaved (and believe it or not it was the older kids who were the problem).
If you are worried about the 5 y/o then ask at check in to be given a table out of the way just in case; I would try to impress upon the kids that this is grandma & grandpa's special day and to try to behave the best they can and just maybe they can have a special treat afterwards (they have some yummy desserts there). Relax & have fun!

the yachtsman is excellent, as far as i'm concerned. you should enjoy it thoroughly, and i think it's actually quite good value for the cut of meat.

It was good. I mean REALLY good. And my 5 year old boy and 7 year old girl LOVED it. They are also serious carnivores and it was their first trip to a real steakhouse. We never let them bring their Nintendo DS to restaurants but let them that night - just to be sure they would be occupied and not bother anyone. Neither needed it - they amused themselves eating the bread like the grownups did! And telling bad knock-knock jokes.

Absolutely love Yachtsman. I can never bring myself to order anything other than the Porterhouse. Here's a pic :slurp:

BTW, we've taken our son a couple of times (once when he was 5 and once when he was 7). He was great both times, even without his Nintendo 3DS! It seems that most of the kids there are well behaved. He always has fun with the Mickey Puzzle kid's desert.

I guess I'll be *that guy* who plays Devil's Advocate.

I, too, reserved the Yachtsman as a special celebratory anniversary dinner on the night of our 18th anniversary in September. I had always read such rave reviews so I thought it was a safe ADR to make. Without typing it all out again, here's the detailed bits from my trip report that chronicle our anniversary dinner there:

Starting at the Crew's Cup next door and through dinner.....

.....and wrapping things up with the custom cake I ordered before the trip for our celebratory dessert.

During the course of our trip we ended up being in contact with one of the Yachtsman's managers to let them know how disappointing the food portion of our meal was. We were invited back to give them one more shot at knocking our socks off on the last night of our trip. We went but in the end wish we hadn't. We should've just left well enough alone and gotten something quick on the fly. Even at the price of 'free' I don't think it was worth the 2nd trip, especially not on the last night when time is so precious. Here's the bits about our 2nd round.

Believe me, nobody can question me more than I do myself on some things. I've been perplexed for a long time as to why I seem to disagree with the impressions others have when it comes to food so frequently. Am I too picky? I don't think so. Am I more picky than the average person? I don't know. Maybe at WDW because the prices are so astronomical for what you get and as a consumer in these times I have high expectations for every dollar spent. Maybe I don't have the pixie-colored glasses as much anymore. We lived in the New Orleans area for a long time before living here so truly amazing, rich foods that make your toes curl are something we are probably a bit spoiled to. Living in Texas, steaks that melt into your soul aren't that hard to find. If I had to compare the steaks at the Yachtsman to anything I'd say maybe Outback. Definitely get better at Texas Roadhouse for half the price.

In retrospect, the best meal I think I've ever had at WDW was in May of '08 when the hubby & I did the Lunch with an Imagineer at the Brown Derby. A few other meals have really grabbed my attention and been super-yummy in all our trips but that seems to happen less and less as time passes. I dunno.

I'd recommend the Yachtsman if your standards aren't that high or if you tend to be easy to please with food/flavor/texture. I will say the service was stellar and I second the recommendation for Oscar. He's an incredible person in addition to being a skilled server. I think being on the DDP makes it a better value (considering you won't have the insult of shelling out the big bucks directly from your pocket if you aren't impressed). Would I go again? Heavens, no. Would I recommend the Yachtsman to a relative or close friend? 99.9% chance of "no".

Since you're on the dining plan, I say you've made a good choice. Shula's is easily the best steakhouse on property, but on the dining plan, Yachstman will do just fine. The steak (rib eye), I felt, was a little over-salted, but otherwise tender and flavorful.

The appetizers were the real winner for everyone in our party, though. They do a great job with the apps and sides. Make sure not to skimp on them!

Yacthsman beats Le Cellier hands down IMO. I had the lamb every time we have gone and my chops were HUGE! Great kid menu, actual food, not dogs and nuggets.Haven't tried Shula's bc I really wasn't that impressed with the one where I live. Hope u have a great. dinner!

Love Yachtsman... It's one of our favorites. I usually have the Porterhouse. The sauteed mushrooms are yummy.

Mana, Ricardo and Li are all excellent servers.
