WOW - What a week at WDW

Servers at buffets work every bit as hard - and maybe more - than other servers.
do we know if OP made a verbal objection or voiced their concerns? I don’t think we can assume they did but maybe OP can tell us if they did or not.

Disney makes it clear that for party reservation sizes all bodies count including infant and for the automatic gratuity it is up the waiter to make the determination if the auto should be applied or not for infants, but the expectation should be the auto is applied. Again I don’t disagree with the counting of people.

Are you sure you quoted the right message?

Are you sure you did? What does this have to do with buffets?

If some servers started counting infants while others did not people would be calling Disney out for being inconsistent.

How do you know “it’s up to the waiter” at Disney?

You said "It’s customary in this country” (not just NY) when I was questioning still tipping at the 18-20% range when wages have increased for tipped workers so much in the last few years.

You have to consider now:
Automatic credit card fees on every transaction are now part of the bill.
Tipping is requested, even for take out.
Cost at restaurants have increased to support the higher wage.

I still do tip, but somewhat less than the 18-20% now.
So, what is an appropriate tip percent given this changes?
But weren’t you referring to minimum wage laws that don’t apply to servers?

You know im not the OP right?
Also Disney literally is called out ALL THE TIME for being inconsistent. Disney even admits they are inconsistent on things.
Disney consistently changes the park hours at inconsistent times. Disney even gives warnings of inconsistency all the time. To say that Disney is a consistent is a poor argument.

This has to do with buffets because I said the 18% is standard across many places and you said the buffet servers do more work and I asked how exactly that’s true

Thank you for your input, but I've been perfectly consistent.
At least I’m not sitting here are arguing that OP should have just “tipped more” without even attempting to understand the issue and instead just being thick skulled and refusing to concede how tacky the behavior demonstrated from the manager was. In addition to creating facts not stated by OP

I didn't say the OP should have tipped more; the OP said his customary tip was 25% but he called the manager over to complain because he didn't like the infant being counted toward the automatic gratuity. An infant who likely didn't add anything to the check.

I wasn't there so I don't know what the manager said; I tend to be somewhat discerning in accepting what people post when they are aggrieved. Sometimes people who are upset innocently misinterpret what is being explained. My opinion is that it was likely closer to what @castlecake2.0 explained in his post above.

Based on my own common sense and experience, I highly doubt the manager told anyone to tip 20% over the 18% automatic gratuity. In fact, I'm absolutely sure the manager would have been thrilled if OP paid the automatic gratuity without calling him over to complain about Disney's policy.

But if you accept that the manager told OP the automatic gratuity does not count at all toward the gratuity and the OP should tip 20% in addition to that, the manager should have been reported. We just returned from a trip with 10 people and we never heard of this.

I live in a city where some of the restaurants have been adding a 20% service charge to the check and stating that any amount above that is not expected but appreciated for exceptional service.

No, just the opposite. I am questioning the reasonable tipping amount with the increase of the tipped wage.
Okay, but what kind of increase in the tipped wage are you talking about? I believe in my city it's $11.02 and, as I said, shifts can be unpredictable. I guess people just differ on how much money people in tipped positions should earn.

I do agree that tipping culture is out of control, especially since the pandemic. Certain service jobs have been difficult to fill and employers are agreeing to tip jars and requests for tips on pick-up orders and self-service to entice people to work for them. One place had an extra charge for "employee health care."

I can't imagine people in historically tipped positions are very happy about this creep, as it's likely to attract the attention of some legislator somewhere. I believe this has already happened in California.

Hi everyone -

We've been going to WDW yearly for the past 25 years and I don't look forward to telling you our experiences this last week:
  1. We stayed at the POP Century, and in our room had very little water pressure, making it almost impossible to rinse my wife's hair. We reached out to maintenance, although they agreed, they could not fix.
  2. At the MK, we had purchased LL for the evening, for Tianna's and Haunted Mansion. But they were both broken down for the night. No refunds, no nothing.
  3. The Beauty and the Beast gift shop was closed. hours are between 12 noon and 6pm. Really, shouldn't everything be open when the park is open?
  4. Gaston's closes at 7pm, so an evening snack was out of the question.
  5. We were on the food plan, 5 adults, one 6-month old baby. He was counted as an adult when it came to table count, putting as at the 6 person mandatory 18% gratuity
    1. Get this, we were told by Ohana management that the 18% gratuity is not the tip, and that we should tip the waiter separately, since he/she does not get any of the gratuity.
It used to be that if a ride was down, Disney would compensate more than necessary. These days, Disney not only doesn't compensate, but they give you the one finger salute....... so sad for the young children to miss the magic that once was.

We keep going, because we want to pass the Disney we once knew to our grand children, but logically we should give Disney the one finger salute back.
We got back last night. We stayed at riverside with no issues for the week.

We had LL on Friday for Tianas. They gave us the option to pick a new LL since it was down but it opened back up and we grabbed it. After we got off it still let us pick a new experience as a replacement so probably just an app glitch but sorry to hear it didn’t work out for you.

We were bummed about the B&B store closure too I had been hyping it up to my wife who hasn’t been in 15 years only to find it closed.

We still had a good time even with some hiccups

So what prompted the conversation about tipping from the manager?

Yes but the manager didn’t know that OP normally tips 25% before they made that statement. Vast majority of people don’t tip 25% for normal service and they shouldn’t. 20% is already a very high percentage. We don’t need more tip creep. The amount of the tip already is adjusted for inflation since it goes up based on the food costs going up.
Everyone seems to forget that. Expected tip amounts seemed to go up during Covid and the years since. All while dinner prices have gone up. As inflation rises, so does the rise in dining costs. So that automatically raises the tip without even going from 15 to 18 or 20 and beyond.

It’s because all the waiters and waitresses and restaurant staff (there are a lot) have been pushing for it and if anyone says anything they respond about how they need to put food on the table and how hard they work. They also don’t want to earn a fair hourly wage for the labor they provide because they know they will make a lot less.

Also, a lot of people aren’t very good at math and they dont “forget” it they just don’t have the ability to grasp the concept.
