Woman airlifted to ORMC after riding Mission: Space

Well one thing is certain now... Whenever some serious incident occurs at any of the Disney parks, you can be sure that the Orlando Sentinel reporters will pounce on it, remind everyone about all of the tragedies that have occured in Disney. And this is then guaranteed to be picked up immediately by the national media as a major story.

Maybe the Orlando Sentinel is still miffed that Walt didn't come down to FL himself and announce that he would by the land in FL before actually purchasing it.

The thing that ticks me off is that Orlando wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Disney, yet the paper tries to destroy WDW's rep every chance it gets.

On a side note, I think it would be smart for everyone, especially adults to just get a check-up before going on vacation. That would be the responsible thing to do for yourself and your family.

She could also have been dehydrated, which has been known to happen in the hot Florida sun when having fun in the parks.
Maybe she had a dizzy spell from the spinning (thats why I can't ride many rides) and the vertigo made her pass out.
Maybe she had a mini stroke...there are just too many possibilities for anyone to jump to conclusions.

Personally, I'd like to know how many medical calls happen daily in Universal or BGT (or any other park for that matter).
Exactly...people fail to remember a certain log flume that was permanently shut down because the RIDE caused so many injuries, all because of its design.

The woman rode a ride, got off, probably dizzy, which I have been on numerous occasions after riding Mission: Space, or the teacups for that matter, more and likely had her knees locked, briefly fainted and hit her head, which would cause the tingling.

The news is having a field day with this crap. They are eating this up that these things keep happening at the same ride, coincidental or not. And unfortunately, too many people believe everything they read or see. I recommended Mission: Space to a guest who asked me what rides they should ride in EPCOT and I couldn't get the name out before they bit my head off saying they wouldn't ride it because it KILLED a four year old boy. It was a lost cause trying to calmly explain that the ride was intense but that the boy had an undiagnosed heart condition. They wouldn't hear of it. Flat out cut me off and said there was no way in [insert expletive here] they were stepping foot near that ride.

I am curious about this too.. I think I may email the reporters at orlando sentinal and ask them if they plan of ever doing an article detailing the calls for medical assistance at ALL orlando area theme parks...

In the past, I have been one of those who are totally against M:S.. I cannot stand the ride and chose not to ride it, for I think it stinks... However, in this case, I will be the first to admit, this does not seem like an issue with the ride... I agree with Wannabe... Maybe she just got a bad case of motion sickness... happens to people... this seems like just one of the normal everyday occurance of people getting dizzy from coming off M:S.. She happened to have fallen, hit her head, and FOR SAFETY CONCERNS AND OT PROTECT THEMSELVES, Disney had her airlifted to a trauma center... Kudos to Disney for reacting in this way.. Especially since she suffered a big blow to the head... Hopefully she is alright and we can move on...

Honestly, I find this one not news worthy...

I agree with you about the dehydration. I don't think enough people take that into consideration.

Yeah this is what i dont get,
Disney is all over the news when someone is injured on M:S!
BUT when kings island has 27 people hurt after riding Son Of Beast, there's not as much hype, dont get me wrong, i know Disney is out there more, but still, what's the difference? do people really think that people only get hurt at disney world??
Atleast i didnt see anything about the 27 people hurt on Son of Beast on the National news, just local...

Why is this, can anyone explain??

Well, the news over here in NJ reported about the 27 people hurt on Son Of Beast.. So, I guess it wasn't just local news coverage... Couldn't find either story on CNN, but, I bet you any amount of money, if someone had died in that accident, then CNN and national media would have been on it... Only saw the woman's story on Orlando Sentinel's website and being broadcast here... So, I would not say this woman passing out hit national news.. People here are making it a bigger story than the media...

Wow.... ok... the Son Of Beast accident was on the front pages of the Drudge Report, Chicago Tribune, ABC News, Reuters, Yahoo News, Google News, and quite a few other web sites.

I dont think there is a LOT of hype per say for this accident... as there is not such a huge fan community as there is with Disney Parks. I mean.... how many of us have been to Kings Island... as compared to WDW?

Disney is held to a higher standard, both by us, and internally within the company. The media knows this. So when something does go wrong, they jump on it. Most of the time... they are a bit overzealous though.

Ok, then i must be wrong, Sorry GothMickey ad DMC-12, well and everyone else, i just thought that no one noticed it (national news), plus i was in south carolina at the beech until yesterday, and away from a computer/newspaper until yesterday, so i didnt get to see it, other than hearing from my mom, and her telling me i am never allowed to go on that AGAIN...

In the time this was posted, 650 people died from smoking.
1016 people died from Heart Diseases.
162 people died from some type of accident.

Why can't the news report on that instead of something as small as this (where they don't even know if it has anything to do with the ride)?

I saw it on several national news channels. The reality is those 27 people could have died on Son of Beast (the name even sounds worse than anything at Disney), but were only hurt thank goodness. But...one person dies or gets hurt at WDW and the media is all over it with the worst stories about the ride. :hammer: Could you imagine if one Disney ride hurt or killed multiple people at one time? We would never hear the end of it with the media.

Because any news outlet reports news for one reason and one reason only: RATINGS. :brick:

Ever turn on your local NewsRadio station at the top of the hour? C'mon... its nothing but death, people being hit by commuter trains, car wrecks that shut down expressways... all at the top of the hour.

As far as smoking and heart disease stories go.... do you really wanna hear 50 stories at the top of the hour.. about how Mildred, Esther, and 74 year old Aunt flow died?

"Great Grandpa Chuck just died... he was 81... and died with a Lucky Strike in his mouth.... more after the heart disease obits, and traffic on the 8s"

No.. no one wants to hear that! Then every news station, TV channel, web page, would be one big obit.

Anyway...I've talked about this subject till I was blue in the face, on this site many of times.. for the past 5 years. If any of you think its easy... go work in a news room for a day... and let see what you put out there. I'm done with this topic.

When it comes to the media, you have to take the good with the bad.

Do a Google News search on Disney. There are fewer than 100 stories about this accident.

And, actually, it's just the same handful of newswire reports that are getting picked up by other media outlets.

In contrast, there are nearly 800 stories on "Pirates of the Caribbean." Most of those are unique stories written by staff writers at the various publications.

If the Disney bashing in the media is just so darn bad, why don't you ever hear company officials complain about it?

That actually happened at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad - Disneyland a couple years ago.
