I understand people being annoyed if site owners steal photos to use on their own sites in order to make their site more popular.
How strict do we have to be with posted photos? I like to save photos to use either in a folder on my PC or use as desktop wallpapers. Is this a problem and seen as stealing photos? If people really are that concerned, then I think we are in the sad situation where the only way to protect your work is to keep it completely private for your own use. I wouldn't want to see it come to this.

With my own photos, I don't have a problem if people want to save it to their hard drive for their own use. In fact, I generally only post lower-resolution photos just to save online space, but if someone ever wants a higher res copy for something like wallpaper, I'm more than happy to provide it. :)

Right, I understand that. But I think it angers me more because if they're not giving credit, or at the very least mentioning that they got the pics somewhere else, they are kind of passing the photos off as their own. It just seems like common courtesy to give photo credit.

Which is totally understandable. Putting pics up and saying they were made by you isn't cool. Best thing to do in those cases is educate people - if a site is legitimate enough they will care when other Disney sites talk about them being copycats. If not, it's just some rinky site anyway and who cares.

I just see it as a risk that has it's balance. No one is ever going to make money selling photos of Disney (and if you are, it's illegal), and someone saying they wouldn't post pictures because of it is just weird to me.

What good is a photo if no one sees it? I'd rather lots of people see it than none. But, as I said above, guess everyone looks at it differently.

In my particular case there were actually 2 different issues that I ran into.

1) We have the much discussed pirating of pictures that I took and posting them around the web without attribution and permission. This was has been discussed to death so i won't get into that part here.

2) In most cases when I post pictures here, they are links to the image that is stored on my own (slowly evolving) web site. I pay a hosting company for storage and network traffic volumes. I have a really good idea of how much traffic will be generated when I post a set of pictures here based on history. As a result I optimize the photos and only post what I'm willing to accept in traffic load against what I'm being billed for.

Unfortunately, a number of sites where posting links to the photos on my web site. This was creating a dramatic increase in the traffic load on my web site over what I planned. One site along was generating 1,000 downloads per day of 2 pictures. If I hadn't caught it I would be getting billed for excessive traffic on the site over what I already pay for. This is completely unacceptable, since not only are they getting benefit for it, I'm getting a bill for it.

That's a really good point, and something that I think people don't tend to think about, and just assume it's people being selfish or difficult about sharing their pics. I don't post things online to the same scale as some others obviously do, and as such didn't understand about the cost issue. Now you have explained the cost issue, I completely understand your problem, but still can't really offer any better solution than the old dilemma of - if you want to post something, you have to be prepared for a certain amount of abuse. It's a shame, but the internet is such that you are never going to stop people taking advantage of others.

I have no problem with people saving them and using them for their own use, backgrounds, etc. Stuff you download and look at cuz its a pretty picture.

What i have a problem is using my photos to make your site look better without any compensation towards me, especially when i didnt agree to it in the first place. I dont work for just "Credit", a photo credit does not pay the rent.

The surefire way is to actually register the photos with the copyright office and then break off a lawsuit in their rear. That'll shut down a few morons.

But see. all someone has to do is change, edit, cut, reform 10% or more of the image, and it then is no longer the "original" and becomes a new images that is not copyrighted.

As FamilyMan said, if you don't want your stuff spread, then don't post it.

And please tell me how posting your photos here pays your rent.

If you do, you're liable for criminal charges. You can't make money off of any photos you take at WDW. And if you're not working for credit, then I don't know what exactly you're working for.

Honestly, you are starting to sound like the "Nature on the Rocks" guy at Epcot with their special flower pots. I don't mean to start a quarrel or anything. I suppose it's just a matter that I don't agree with you, and think you should post your photos anyway. We'll have to agree to disagree. Sorry Dave.

I gotta agree with Jared on this one. As much as I disagree with photo theft, you can't be making money on Disney's photos. I assume you just used that line as a reference to your photography in general, not your Disney photography...

The problem with Yahoo searches, is that it just goes through the net and finds images. It doesn't come up with images that Yahoo is hosting, it comes up with images from all over the net. I'm not saying that you did or didn't get some of the pics you are being accused of "stealing" from a Yahoo search, just that there is a remote possibility that if they were his pics, the Yahoo search showed you some of his images and you may not have realized it if they were his.

Yeah but Yahoo has you go to the site in order to view the image at full.
