I didn't say anyone was trying to be subpar, but that they didn't care if it came out that way. And I find the official justifications given for why interesting stuff like "Starboy" and evil!Amaya were cut to be vague and/or unsatisfying, so I'm wondering if the filmmakers aren't allowed, at this point anyway, to be more honest about whether or not executive oversight interfered with things. Were the deadlines too tight? I don't get the feeling anyone at Disney felt they'd really made a great film with this.
One warning sign I saw in the months leading up to release was that all along Disney only previewed about 20 minutes of highlights from the first act (including "This Wish" and "I'm a Star") to exhibitors and at animation festivals alongside the completed "Once Upon a Studio" short. They never thought to try a gala screening of the whole movie at a film festival, animation or otherwise, the way The Boy and the Heron played the international festival circuit around this time or Elemental played Cannes. Given this was their big huge centennial movie, I began to think they had something to hide...
