Ok Folks,Let me fire this question at you.Newbies asked me the other day about going to WDW for first time and where to stay. Now I have my favourite resort but i would hate to recommend it incase it's not their cup of tea,so to speak. So how would you sell your favourite resort to a friend saying " you'll love it " What are the main reasons that make it a dream resort and no way will you be disappointed. :)

Well, Mad, I can only speak of the Wilderness Lodge. I love it because when I walk through the doors and the huge wooden pillars greet me, and the beautiful fireplace is roaring with a warm inviting fire, I know I am at peace in my second home. The goose bumps pop up on the arms and I get that excited feeling. I am partial too cause I love the great outdoors and being there gives me that. The landscaping is beautiful. I like seeing God's little creatures, the ducks and rabbits running around. Just Love It!!! ;)

For us it's location, location, location, my wife and son have to be on the monorail. When people ask about what resort I point them to this website, allearsnet and the Unofficail guide and tell them to pick what "feels" right to them and to consider location, theme and price.

mmmmm....toughy! I tend to recommend based on the person, not on my own suggestions. So two kids I nanny for are going for one night, love Cars, so I recommended having grandparents join them and stay in the Cars suite. And they are doing that and going in 3 weeks! :) I find that I am usually selling staying on property more then a specific resort. But when I sell a resort, I usually say "immersed in the theme and disney experience" and "amazing themeing" and then go on and on about all the amenities! :)

The AKL gets a bad rap that it is so far away from everything. That is overstated. it is not that big a deal as people make it. With that said this is an outstanding resort for both kids and adults. Including Kidani Village, IMO they have the best group of restaurants on property (Sanaa, Boma, Jiko and the Mara is a nice QS). The Animals right outside your balcony, is both peaceful and relaxing to experience each day. There are plenty of activities for kids. Each night you can go out by the savannah, just past the pool and try the night time vision goggles to view the animals. For adults Victoria Falls lounge at Jambo House, right above Boma & Jiko is a fine place to relax and have a drink after running all day in the parks!!!!

No
if its their first trip and they could stay anywhere, id recommend Contemp for the view and the walk to MK (with GF a very close second). Next would be YC for the pool and walks to EP and HS. (YC over BC only because its not as busy and over BW because of the pool) Last would be AKL savannah view for the view of course. id just be happy they were going and assure them that NO hotel in WDW is a bad choice.

We love the Comtemp! i have never been to the YC, but we stay at the Bay Lake Tower mainly because of the view and you can walk to MK. they also have a kid-friendly pool, that includes a mickey slide and games for kids every so often (i forget what the specific times are) but the Contempo also has all of those shops and Chef mickey too!

I've only stayed at the Ft Wilderness Cabins, but I loved them and would stay there again in a heartbeat!

It had a living room, a dining room, a kitchen and dishwasher (you dont have to do the dishes though, leave them in the sink and mousekeeping does them for you. They INSIST.) You have a HUGE private bathroom with a bathtub and shower head with awesome water pressure. You have a full bedroom in the back for the kiddos.

I loved being able to put the kiddos in the bunk beds with a video, they could go to sleep and my husband and I could be in the living room, watching our own movies or just enjoying the peace and quiet. You're not ON top of eachother the whole time, you have your own "living" spaces. After a day around crowds, sometimes all you want is to sprawl out on the couch and do NOTHING. lol

Not to mention, they ALL have their own private deck/porch, outdoor furniture and a grill. It's seriously home away from home.

Location is very important to me too and that is why my favorite is the Beach Club. I also tell people to look at pictures of each resort, read about the amenities and pick what feels right to them.

I too recommend based on the person asking vs. my preferences. I find I'm not so much having to sell any particular Disney property as I am having to try and explain the pros of staying onsite- especially the intangible ones. After that we usually talk budget and trip duration b/c I don't want to pitch them the Poly when their budget is more modest or they'd rather sink that $ into other things...like extra days or special experiences.

AKL is my favorite because I relax the second I enter the lobby. I love the theme.

I think it all comes down to personal preference. If you love the theme, that one is the best for you.

I always encourage people who are gung-ho to stay in a wdw hotel to watch the planning video and look at pictures on allears and just pick the one they think looks best in their price range. :)

Generally, though, I advise people to go offsite. You get so much more offsite.

If friends ask us, we can rest assured that a deluxe resort, suites or concierge-level rooms, or even the Fort Wilderness cabins, are out of the question due to the price, which would cost as much for a 2-week stay as many of our set pays for 6 months worth of home mortgage payments. To give some perspective, although my husband and I are attorneys with good salaries, we live in a rural farming community in which my friends and I can be heard to complain that the "prices at the Salvation Army Thrift Store are getting to be outrageous." Because a vacation to Disney World is such an expensive luxury for folks in our neck of the woods, and because most of our friends would prefer to use their monies for additional nights and park tickets rather than more luxurious accommodations, the extent to which a more-than-$200-per-night hotel room would never be remotely worth it to them (or to us) simply cannot be overstated.

For this reason, if a friend asked, I'd first recommend the resorts that I think are the best value, with a low price but decent amenities and new-ish fixtures: Pop Century or a standard Little Mermaid room at AoA, for those who want to minimize the budget and will be spending most of their time at the parks. If they're a little more well-off or if there's a terrific room discount, we'd recommend one of the freshly-refurbished Port Orleans resorts (French Quarter if they hate long walks, Riverside if they want a more leisurely experience). If they're adventurous and "like luxury" (mentally replaying Will Farrell "Jag-u-ar" SNL sketch here) and their family is not large, I'd recommend renting DVC points and living it up in a standard studio at the Animal Kingdom or Boardwalk. If they are avid campers with a nice RV or fifth-wheel, we'd suggest driving and staying in the Fort Wilderness campground.

Once price is accounted-for, however, it really does come down to "personal theming preferences," as the previous poster noted. We prefer moderate accommodations (as a family of 4, we appreciate the added space) and just happen to prefer the Port Orleans resorts to Caribbean Beach (which has a great theme, but is cursed with double beds instead of queen-size, something my 6'+ husband prefers to avoid) and Coronado Springs (which is very spread-out, but I don't think it's as attractive on those long walks to the main building as Port Orleans Riverside, and the restaurant there set the scene for our most "meh" meal ever at WDW).
