I simply don't think ToonTown was particularly popular. Princess pull better for the little girl demographic, and little boys are more interested in pirates and cowboys.
Also, regarding Mickey's home, I think this is borderline insane but Disneyland enthusiasts will chew your ear off about Mickey's "real" home being in California, and that ToonTown in Florida was simply his "vacation home." I can't cite the source of this other than it's the argument always given in "other" message board sites.
Nice avatar!
WDW's Toontown seems pretty popular to me. On busy afternoons, I've seen the line for the Barnstormer exceed 1 hour, the line just to get in Minnie's House spill out into the street, and both Mickey and Minnie's House becoming so crowded that you can barely move inside. On these days, the line to Meet Mickey also exceeds 1 hour and spills out of the Judge's Tent and fills up Mickey's backyard. I think the "Fab 5" are still pretty popular with a lot of kids and the popularity of the "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" on Disney channel probably helps.
I agree that the idea is silly that we supposedly can't have a Toontown at the MK because DL already has "the real one". I guess our versions of all the other attractions that DL also has are not "the real ones" either!
I know it's popular to bash Toontown (especially WDW's) but personally, I'm a big fan of the area and will be really sad to see it go. I think this section is criminally underated. I think Mickey and Minnie's Houses are very charming, and I love all the details, propping, gags, and overall whimsy found inside. Plus, this music loop in Toontown Fair is one of my favorites in all of WDW, as it consists of very catchy, whimsical tunes from the classic Silly Symphony shorts and "Fab Five" character shorts from the 20's and 30's.
They should put TT in DHS where Narnia and One Mans Dream are now.
Although my first choice would be for Toontown to stay in the MK, if it were the only way to save it I'd be all for moving the Houses to the studios as part of a larger Toontown (complete with the the long-awaited Roger Rabbit ride) but PLEASE not at the expense of Walt Disney: One Man's Dream! It was bad enough when the WALT DISNEY Story was removed from the MK at WALT DISNEY World. WDW did the right thing to eventually expand and update the attraction at the Studios as WALT DISNEY: One Man's Dream.
This is one of my faves at the Studios park! I easily spend over an hour on each visit enjoying the exhibits depicting Walt's life and work, and all the great memorabilia from the classic films and parks. And I LOVE the film which caps off a nice tribute to the man who started it all, without whom WALT DISNEY World would not even exist!
Surely WDW is large enough ("There's enough land here to hold all the ideas and plans we can possibly imagine") that there should always be room for this wonderful tribute to the great Walt Disney!
