Why No Classics on Disney Channel?

I'm guessing having classic movies on the Disney Channel is bad for the DVD industry. They want you to pay for the privilege of watching classics instead of allowing you to watch them on TV for free.

Apparently, though, there must be plenty of money to be made by airing your product on TV for "free" or else, according to that logic, nothing would air on TV and we would have to buy EVERYTHING on DVD or pay-per view.

Watching Alice in Wonderland right now. Never really liked this movie but not a whole lot on. It doesn't matter to me that they don't show older movies because I'd rather watch those on DVD anyway and anyone who cares enough about making sure their children are exposed to those movies will have them on video or dvd. But I would like to see some of the cartoons from the 80's, love me some Ducktales, Muppet Babies, Wuzzles, Gummi Bears and such, wouldn't ever buy them on DVD but I'm sure if they were on tv i'd watch.
There really should be a classic Disney channel, there's an ESPN classic, Nick at nite, TVland, Turner Classic, and probably others that i'm not aware of so a Classic Disney channel would make great sense. I also want to agree with what someone else said, calling movies like Aladdin and Little Mermaid classics really does make a person feel old, I don't like to think that movies I watched as a teen are classics now. It's the same way I felt when nick at nite started showing Family Ties and Growing pains. I'm used to them showing Lucy and Honeymooners, its sucks when they start calling the shows that I watched as a kid "Oldies".

Heres My 2 Cents...

They need another channel which demographic targets older viewers, not seniors, but older than teenagers, like 20-50 yrs old.

This channel should be programmed with CLASSIC disney programming...Vault Disney type programming. It could include the classic cartoons to old Davey Croket films, all the way to classic moments with Walt Disney, aka, Walt Disney Presents...

This channel could also feature the latest happenings with the Walt Disney Company. In other words, whats going on with the parks, new rides, ect. ect. Also they could update us with feature film information. What are the new movie Disney is working on?

This channel could work. I would be willing to pay a little bit more to watch it, and I am sure others would to.

for those who where teens when aladin came out and bb and lk thay dont seem like classics but i am 19 and those are the movies i grew up with i remember going and seeing lion king in theaters when i was young. i think it just depends on how old you are and what you grew up with. heck i have seen spirited away on tmc and that is not that old. but yea i remember when i was younger i used to love watching the old disney movies. i think this was back when you had to pay for the channel. i also remember watching valt disney at night. the only thing is the 13 year olds today would not care about this stuff and most stay up late and watch tv. i think the hole thing with valt disney was to have programing when kids are asleep. this is one aspect of nick that i like after 9 it is old shows. my brother that is 13 never wants to go to bed if there is a show on he likes and by doing this he does go to bed. i think disney should get smart and stop showing shows like thats so raven at 3 am so that the youth of america dont become nocternal lol. but yea we need a classic disney channel.

lucky for us, the That's So Raven they show at 3 am is just a repeat of the one we saw at 6 pm!

I grew up on movies like Aladdin and The Lion King, too. Probably saw The Lion King 5 times in the theatre haha. Then Titanic came out when I was 13 and I saw that about 5 times but for different reasons hahahaha...

I think what mharrington is really referring to is that Disney is still releasing a lot of "classics" on special edition collector's DVD, i.e. Peter Pan, Snow White, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, the Little Mermaid, etc....

They want people to think that they need to see these types of movies, since they haven't seen it for along time on their own home video and/or T.V so they need to buy it before it goes back into the Disney Vault. :)

Its not exactly free TV Disney still makes money off you. If I remember right, even though the disney channel is in a basic cable/satellite package they get paid by the provider (comcast, dish network...) a certain amount for each subscriber they have.

Its the old disney shorts and stuff that I miss. If I want to see the lion king or aladdin or something like that I will just put in my DVD.

You're REALLY making me feel old! :ROFLOL:Those movies came out when I was in High school and it's hard for me to imagine anything that recent being a "classic".

Me too! I think that's one reason I liked the castle forecourt show at MK so much, because the princesses in it were the ones I grew up with: Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty (my fave), and Snow White. The Little Mermaid was released when I was in junior high/ high school, and I remember seeing Aladdin and The Lion King in the movie theater. *gets out my walker*

That would be an awesome thing! We have a number of DVDs of old Disney cartoons, because that's the only way my kids can see the original Mickey cartoons. So, I guess we caved to Disney marketing  , but a Disney Classic channel would be a fabulous idea! :sohappy:

Do you think in 15 years, people will long for the days of "classics" like Home on the Range and Treasure Planet? I'm personally hoping it'll be more like "Home on the Range what what?"

I hope not!:lookaroun
