That was my favorite part of "Shrek." In any event, excellent points, WDWFREAK53.

Disney, hopefully, will continue to make animated films that parents can feel comfortable taking even the youngest children to, while Dreamworks seems to like having an edge to its films that's more appealing to the "tween" and teen markets and anyone who finds Disney a little too syrupy sweet for their taste.

Copycatting isn't limited to the animation industry. Remember all the gross-out teen flicks that came out after the success of "American Pie"? The really old, old members of this forum -- and you know who you are :animwink: -- can recall the days when every studio cranked out cowboy movies. (What'd they call them back then, talkies?)

Yesterday's cowboy is today's fish. :)

LOL- I have to admit I didn't actually see Road to El Dorado. I just remember the local paper at the time doing a side-by-side comparison of the two movies.

Its because of this that the animation contracts are so harsh..but even with the new security measures and top secret meetings...leaks get out...

I could go into a million "technical" reasons why shrek wasnt as good as monsters inc (as some of you know, I am a computer animator)...and i could probobly point out dozens of animation errors in shrek (clear indication of rushing to beat the monsters inc release date)..im not saying dreamworks makes BAD movies..but they should hire a decent concept design team or something..instead of yanking ideas from the mouse.

What kind of animation errors did Shrek have? I'd like to look for them.

Dan...tell me if I'm wrong on this...

Didn't Pixar have to develop a new program or software in order to make "Sully's hair" actually act like "hair" (which is a HUGE step ABOVE Shrek)

And...I believe I noticed a "transparent" look in a few scenes in "Shrek's mouth"

I think Shrek was a very enjoyable movie, but Monsters was a better piece from an artist's point of view. I love them both :)

Computer animation...what a fasinating job!

My daughter has a degree in Visual Communications and works for an agency in Downtown Chicago so I know alittle bit about the subject.

NowInc...Who have you worked for and have we seen any of your animation? We would Love to see some. Care to share?

Yep..and it has since become a pretty much "standard" hair plug in included with Maya (however the one THEY used it a tad bit more complex)..im not going to say that Dreamworks (well..actually PDI seeing how they did most of the work) didnt make any technical achievments either. The fire in shrek was done in a new way that was pretty damn impressive. I still dont think tho that it was enough to push the movie (which i will ALWAYS see as nothing more than a high budget fart joke) above monsters inc.

Well...rumor has it that i did a couple of internships...pixar and disney. I cant exactly mention half of what i worked on (read my statement above about the contracts) since most of it isnt out for public view yet..but i was involved (in at least SOME small way) in the last few released by both companies.

As for non-mouse work...I did various freelance cleanup animation and commercial work for companies between the years of 1998 and 2002. Sad to say however that since then I have pretty much hung up the hat of the "3d" world (tooooo many animators..and it kinda stopped being fun), but i DO keep up with the new technology and software.

Usually, I don't think of Dreamworks animations as "children" or "family" movies simply because, even though they're "cartoons" they're really aimed at older audiences. I LOVE Road to El Dorado and I'm aware that chldren probably don't like it very much since many of its jokes are veiled innuendos, like in Shrek. I'm not saying Disney movies are silly and childish, but the type of humor is different, so I don't tend to compare them.

But the fact that there is strong ripping-off going on is SO true.
