Why does Disney put up with the Sci-Fi Drive In?

I read alot of bad reviews about sci fi,but kept my reservations with the notion everybody has different tastes.Well,it was horrible.the worst meal we ate all week. One of the worst restaurants i have ever eaten in.The atmosphere does not make up for the food,in my case at least. Not only was the food lousy, but there was a hair, a large hair in my starter.Maybe lunch is better, but dinner was horrible.I would never eat there again.

Wow. I really loved the Sci-Fi. It may not have been the best food, but it wasn't horrible. It was a fun atmosphere, and our waiter was amazing. It will definitely be a must do on my next trip, dining plan or not.

Not harsh, that was just your experience. If I'd gone that night, maybe I'd hate it too.

I guess I am one of the lucky ones. I've eaten there about 5 times and I have never had a bad meal or a horrible wait-person. I've had burgers - big ones, ribs - which were moist and wonderful, and I totally love the atmosphere. I always seem to go when it is 90-100 degrees outside, so the cool air is a plus, too. Anyway, everyone sure has a different experience at any restaurant.

I like the Sci-Fi for it's uniqueness, but I think they could do LOADS better. Honestly, the film stinks. If they'd just make that part better, I'd love it so much more.

I personally like the Sci-Fi, we went for the first time last October and all 6 of us really enjoyed it. The food wasn't bad at all, I mean we weren't expecting anything amazing or fancy...it is mainly burgers and shakes but they have some other things on their menu you wouldn't expect that I found to be good. The atmosphere was really cool and the service was great, we've got reservations for November and I'm looking forward to going again.

I've never had a bad experience there, but I don't go in expecting a top-tier meal. I mean, some of the meals are delivered by CMs on skates. For me, it's always burger, fries and a shake. The film clips are funny, but I love cheesy sci-fi.

Disney probably puts up with it because it pulls people and their cash in the door. Every time I've been, the place has been full and more people are waiting to be seated. Usually, I see people turned away at check-in because there are no openings or people don't want a long wait to be seated.

I'll be back next month. Can't wait. But, of course, YMMV.

I've had Sci-Fi for lunch and dinner. This was a learning experience. I think there are some places in WDW that the lunch menu is better than the dinner and vice versa. I looooved Sci-Fi for lunch. When we arrived for dinner I took one look at the menu and was astounded that there weren't any burgers. I asked the waitress if I could order one even tho it wasn't on the menu and she obliged. I love Sci-Fi for lunch. The burgers/shakes were great and it was an overall fun experience. For dinner, heavens no. Ick.

With that said, we had 50's Prime Time for dinner in February '06 and we were not at all impressed. My aunt swears by the place. In December we're slated to try it for lunch. Maybe it will be better.

My aunt who is a huge Disney fan had Whispering Canyon for dinner and didn't care too much for it. We're taking her back for lunch. We've had lunch there twice and LOVE it.

Also, my cousin's wife told me Tony's Town Square in MK is better at lunch than dinner.

I think that people might like the restaurants better if they checked menus before making their seatings to ensure that the menu for the meal they are booking would be to their liking. I learned that the hard way! LOL!

And, to the person who said "There's no right or wrong. Just different." Thank you. I live by that. Different isn't wrong. It's just different. And goodness knows.....I am veeeeery different...... LOL!

It is very simple why Disney puts of with the Sci-Fi: because tourists are still willing to pay $9.50 for a hot dog. After Disney has collected the tab, why do they care?

As I am a Marketing Major, allow me to express a few points about this: 1) Profit above all else!!! 2) A person is more likely to associate a bad dining experience with the restaurant than the theme park as a whole. 3) And not entirely factual but humorous, a bad experience = stress eating and searching for a place to get "an actual meal" = more profit = Mickey drives an Italian sports car.

Speaking as a consumer why do we put up with poor standards and high prices? Thats the question, when we stopped visiting and eating Disney soon wheeled out the so called marketing experts whose fabulous idea was to give special rates and discounts.

Must be a hard course to pass that one.:drevil: :animwink:

WDW does make one burger. It is the same at Sci-Fi, Beaches and Cream, Pecos Bills, and anywhere else you get a burger. Same thing with Chicken Fingers. And many other things. It would be nice if they did offer something special at the resturaunts that wasn't identical to what you can get and any number of places across property for $3-4 less.

do many people make reservations for the sci-fi or is it on of those that would be pretty easy to walk up to. Thanx

Make a reservation. I've seen many people get irate because they didn't have an ADR and then would have to wait over an hour for a table.

Sci-Fi Drive-In has a great atmosphere. The food is average, kind of like TGIFridays, but it brings in the crowds.

I've never seen anyone walk up and be seated right away. I've seen some folks get pretty upset when they're told that nothing is open or they have to wait.

Just my observation.

We were just there this past Thursday and I had made resevations for three breakfasts but no dinners, and I figured most people with the dining plan made reservations for the fantasmic dinner package, so I didn't think we would have a problem getting in, we tried the 50's prime time cafe b/c thier menu looked better and Ireally wanted fried chicken, but they were booked so we tried sci fi and they were able to get us in the picnic seating right away(not in the cars), less than 5 minutes!!! I thought it was fantastic!!! Loved the BLT soup!!!!
