Why Do People Struggle So Much With Snack Prices?

Think for yourselfer
It's not just Disney, at a Mets game this weekend, i noted the comparison of Shake Shack prices vs. my local Shake Shack

Burgers: $10.50 vs. $8.09 (30% markup)
Fries: $5.75 vs. $2.99 (92% markup)
Shakes: $6.75 vs. $5.29 (28% markup)

And you know what? There was still a 45 minute line.

I'm a season ticket(partial plan) holder. Those SHACK lines boggle my mind. You miss 3 innings waiting in line. And it's not like SHACKS aren't popping up everywhere.

Wherever you go nowadays, even fast food, it is becoming more expensive ( food in general). You may save a little $ by cutting the costs of drinks and snacks, but I always just put it in our budget. My Mom ( 76) has a scooter with a basket on the front. We put 2 or 3 mugs in there and fill up with ice water before we go. Then we stop at the quick service restaurants to get the cups of ice water and transfer it into the mugs ( the ice lasts longer).;)

I just got back from WDW on a wonderful 8 day trip. If anyone else was there, you know it was pretty warm (over 90 several days) and water/drinks were definitely a huge need. There was 0 rain too.

I constantly heard things like:
"$3 for water is robbery!!"
"Why is water $3??"
"$4 for ice cream?"
"Why is Powerade $4.25?"
"Mickey isn't out here because he's too busy in the back counting our money!!"

Give me a break. What do people expect, honestly? We all get that water is expensive on a per bottle basis, but isn't it just the cost of doing business? Expensive snack items aren't a Disney thing. This is the case at most amusement parks, Fairs, and concessions (movies, shows, sporting events, etc). They have to make money on this higher margin stuff because despite what so many think, they don't make huge margin on park entry.

I still think many restaurants are pretty decent value, even without a meal plan. We ate at a favorite, Liberty Tree, and got the Pilgrim's Feast for under $20/person. This value for real food is better than a hot dog and fries and close to a standard lunch $15 lunch at a restaurant chain.

Also, they do offer free ice water if hydration is your concern. I just can't get over how much people complain about something so standard. I feel like people come to the parks feeling ripped off and it's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The argument of 'everyone else is doing it' does not justify poor behavior. Don't you remember that lecture from your parents?

Where would the world be if we didn't hold ourselves to higher standards and instead just accepted the spread of bad behavior as the acceptable norm?

The leapfrog and shadow pricing philosophies are ways you try to convince customers your prices aren't that bad (due to relative comparisons) -- they are not justifications for the pricing.

Other venues charge such prices because they have a monopoly on access and give customers no other options. They test customer's thresholds for tolerance. It's never been seen as GOOD customer treatment, but purely one of testing how far customers will tolerate before revolting.

And unlike other examples.. Disney has many factors going for it that would improve it's margins. Like, shared functions, shared labor, economies of scale on purchasing and stocking, effectively zero rent or facilities charges, etc. Yet, they continue to be a lead in how far pricing can be pushed...

People just love to complain. If they can't afford it, or truly find it as a rip off, they shouldn't buy it. And if people didn't buy it, Disney either would sell it cheaper, or not at all.

If ANYONE is complaining about a bottle of water being $3, then maybe thats a sign that they shouldn't be taking a Disney vacation. And i'm sure some of these people are staying at a deluxe resort which they barely spend time at other than sleeping.

To be fair its not something that really bothers me to much as it is sort of to be expected. We always plan mealtimes tactically so we can have plenty of drinks with meals and then use snack credits on the DDP to cover the rest of the day and then buy bottles as and when we need.

Having spent 90mins queing in the October 9PM heat for BTMRR last year when the line was advertised as 40mins, I think I pretty much wouldve sold my soul for a bottle of Dasani after that !:devilish:

.10c, $4.25, what's an eighteen gajillion percent increase between friends?
Eh, The Walt 'all time high record profit' Disney Company needs it.

And besides, it provides the peanut gallery an opportunity to take over the boards with bullish commentary how inflated prices are teh awesomeh until the adults get home from work and remind people that there are dental plans, taxes and college loans and mortgage payments in real life.

Or at least for the middle class, the people by and for whom DL and WDW were build. But that was Walt, that dirty mid-century Republican who believed in such moronic concepts as that egality and a strong middle class make America great. Communism, by the standards of today's populist right-wing basket-case politics and ideas. You either pull out $3 every time anyone in your party takes a sip as if you were a gangsta, a South American corrupt politician (pleonasm there!), or a defense contractor, or you are a loser who needs to stay home.

I've seen this before, and I don't care. For me Dasani tastes better than any other water out there. I don't care if it's from a tap or from a spring, as long as it tastes like fresh water.
It's not a knock on anyone's taste, it's how tap water is essentially repackaged in unnecessary plastic and marked up an insane amount. On a level, I can justify buying Poland Springs. Honestly it would be environmentally responsible of Disney to stop selling bottled tap water, and instead offer more water fountains and bottle filling stations.

Disney's prices aren't cheap, but they aren't obscene either.
They're far more reasonable than a movie theater concession, or any of the concert venues I attend.
Additionally, if you stay on site - the markets seem to have more reasonable prices.
I'll buy items, and keep them in our room.

Why? Because they are intelligent enough to not smile when getting bent over?
It seems to me that they should be smiling since they "bent over" voluntarily. I don't recall anyone being forced to buy anything that they feel is overpriced. Or should we all have a third party making our decisions for us? Do we need it regulated? Do we get to decide how much is too much in ways other then not supporting it? Just one more useless thing to complain about especially when we have total control over what we spend money on.

Bottom line, if I'm presented with all types of bottled water, I'll pick Dasani every time. Its source doesn't matter to me - I just like the taste.
