Why are their computers down so much?

I have been planning an upcoming trip to WDW in November for my husband and I since April. I would say that out of the 10 or so times that I have called to make room reservations as well as dining reservations, a quarter of the time their computers were either down or being "updated" whereas I would have to call back in either "a few hours" or "tomorrow". Now, I work in the IT industry and I find it crazy that Disney updates its systems during the day instead of the middle of the night, and also, that their systems are down so often. I know that they must have an System Admin department of more than 5 people. I don't know, being that people's heads would roll at the company I work for if we were down even a fraction of that time I was curious if anyone else thought the same thing.:veryconfu

It's HarmonioUS, NOT HarmoniYOU.
Because the Apple IIe they run on keeps damaging the 5.25 floppies?

Less Oregon Trail... and more makey reservations, is what I say.

I hear that's all they do in the board room now since Steve Jobs came on board. It seems like Ouimet has some horrible luck though, every time Rasulo's playing Ouimet dies of Dyssentry!

The river is too deep to ford. You loose:
-5 ADRs
-3 nights at your resort
-2 Magic Your Way tickets
-Lil' Eisner (drowned)
-Roy Disney (typhus)

I recall system problems whenever a new version of one of the programs that are used for booking came out. There are several different programs used, so it could be any of them. They use separate programs to book resorts/tickets (this one is the WORST), dining/recreation and golf, maybe even more now. It does take awhile to work the bugs out of any new version of the programs. I don't mean to imply that they do the updating during business hours, only that it may take awhile to work through the bugs that pop up once the system is in use.

As well, there are times when the system just really does have a bad day. It would be a pain sometimes!

As for the cast member using the word "updating" on the phone to the guest, that's what they are told to say. Nothing ever "breaks" at Disney, it only "updates" :D

When I called yesterday to get the discount for our room I was on hold forever and when the guy answered he told me their computers were down and callback in 2hrs..Like you I really didn't buy that story and I work in a callcenter and if we're ever down we have an automated system telling people to callback instead of making them hold...So needless to say I called back..The next castmember that answered said their call volume is high and when everyone is using the system it goes really slow..She stated the guy I spoke to was telling different people to callback and the matter was being looked into as to why he was doing that..

Disney uses the worst CRS in history. Their PMS aren't any better. At least they use off the rack, tried and proven systems for their restaurants.

No
bugs in software, over consumption of bandwidth, Denial of service attacks which in turn make bandwidth a problem, and possibly incompetent IT admins

Disney speak:

"At this time we are undergoing a system enhancement"

Meaning...

The systems are not working, and IT is "enhancing" them to work again.

Using the words "down" is very un-Disney.

Disney management needs to give the IT managers larger budgets for new servers and equipment.
Disney needs to invest more in their computer programs, realizing that the internet and computer systems are becoming more valuable and necessary tools of business each year.

Tks.

I believe Disney outsourced the majority of their IT division years ago...

Still, the problems that they have are inexcusable.

From my experience, the DCL team has things under better control.

It kind of blows my mind that with the amount of people in their company that the idea of having a compatent system as well as IT people to administer it got lost on them somewhere. Not to mention that the whole thing blew my chances of getting a FL resident discount, cause by tme their 'system was back up there wasn't any discounts left.

They use for the most part run of the mill, IBM terminals for their CRS in their gift shops and Restaurants..Working for the leader in the POS market. I wish they would finish the job and put us into their parks not just into the cruise lines. The productivity would skyrocket, seeing is how we already have six flags, knotsberry farms, and more theme parks. We know how to run them right....Come on Disney...MICROS is waiting.

Because they are probably Windows based. Since Steve Jobs is with Disney, maybe they should get a more up to date OS like Apples OS X.

I totally agree! OS X is a much better OS, I used to be a Windows Systems Engineer and I have switched to OS X and use nothing but Apple.
